There is a technology now where you buy an outboard box and you can place a video card in it and then plug this into a laptop. This then gives a standard laptop the graphics power of whatever gpu is in there. I wonder then if this sound card could be used in a similar fashion to allow more mobile use?

For mobile use, an external DAC+Amp (e.g. Schiit stack) would make more sense... Or wait for EVGA to release an external version of the Nu Audio.

If for some reason you really wanted to go this route, you'd need to make sure that the egpu enclosure can power the Nu Audio correctly (SATA power connector including 3.3V). As egpu enclosures are intended for GPUs, most would supply only a 12V PCIe power connector.

From our testing, it's generally a no-go with these types of solutions.  Most (including all the ones we tested) do not even have a SATA power connector in the box (because why would a VGA need one, right?).  However, the other issue is that something in the PCIe slot in these devices grounds or shorts the cards when installed, even if you swap out the power supplies.

Thanks for the heads up! When you say shorted out do you mean it actually fried a few Nu-audio cards just to try it?

No, the cards powered up fine after removing them from the PCIe slot, and worked fine after placing them in a proper system.

So is there any plans to have an external DAC version of the Nu Audio at some point

If you know there is but cannot confirm, you can totally give us a generic non binding answer like " we are exploring all options "

Well, we are exploring all options, of course, but currently no plans to make an external product of that nature at this time.
