Hello all,
I built this system over a month ago. I have done a lot of tweaking and stress testing and the thing runs rock solid. Then the other day it does not boot so I pressed reset and it boots right up. If I do a restart it boots right back up but will not boot on cold start. I can navigate BIOS just fine and it passes POST with display on monitor, then drive LED goes nuts like it's starting to read the drive, then nothing. Monitor is black, drive LED is inactive and the POST Code Indicator shows CPU temp.

I have reset BIOS to Optimized Defaults
I have reset GPU to default
I have run Disc Scan
I have run Windows Memory scan

This is in a Fractal Design Define S2 case with dual liquid cooling loops so I have not yet started tearing it down to check individual parts. I guess I'm hoping someone will know just exactly what might be going on before I go that route. I had an issue quite similar to this with my X99 - 5930K build where the CPU had failed. The only difference is that that build threw a Legacy Boot Device code.

Thanks in advance for your input.
Roger

Re: Z390 FTW + 9900K + 3200MHz CL14 Cold Boot Issue 2019/01/26 17:44:32 (permalink)
I did some trouble shooting/testing today.

Re-seated GPU
Re-seated PCIe extension cable
Removed PCIe extension cable
Mounted GPU into second PCIe motherboard slot
Swapped out Display Port cables
Changed monitors using HDMI cable/monitor
Re-seated memory modules

I have reset CMOS as well

Still process is, Power On > Good POST > Start reading drives > Screen goes blank and POST code display shows CPU temp as if system booted. Press RESET and system will reboot as normal and pass any and all stress tests I can throw at it. Click Restart and system with restart as normal and run great. This is only happening on a power-on boot.

NOTE: I am starting to get ghosting shadows in games, Chrome and other applications. I just noticed this today for the first time.

Any ideas?
Roger

It restarts ok when running but Dead from a Cold Boot then replace the Power Supply.
I was at least getting a Post Code of 97.
Odd only because my issue was also with 1300 Watt Power Supplies.

Re: Z390 FTW + 9900K + 3200MHz CL14 Cold Boot Issue 2019/01/27 19:00:22 (permalink)
That's a good question Sajin. I received the board and test benched it. It came with 1.01. Once system was built and OS installed I updated to 1.03. The system ran for over a month until this last week when this issue started. Should I install 1.02 or even revert to 1.01?

The odd thing is that it does not hang on any Q Codes at all. It passes POST, the screen goes blank at the same time the drive LED goes nuts, then the POST codes go right to reporting CPU temp. It acts like the system booted but the display is blank. Seems like a GPU issue but yet the GPU is very strong in stress tests and gaming once in Windows. Seems that maybe the PSU is not sending enough initial power to the GPU, just enough for display during POST or while in BIOS. I tried several DP ports on GPU as well as another monitor via the HDMI port.

By the way I mentioned an issue with Ghosting Shadows in an earlier post above. I fixed that. During testing I was checking if the monitor had settings for inputs and I had inadvertently changed the OD to Extreme. It's on normal now and working properly again.

Another thought. This started about the time I installed the latest Samsung NVMe driver v3.0.0.1802 - 2/12/2018. I was running the Microsoft driver up to this point. I just cannot remember which was first, the driver or the error. I assume it is ok to uninstall the Samsung driver and let Windows handle the driver?

Yes, I'd defintely try out the older bios version. Uninstalling the nvme driver temporarily shouldn't be a problem.

Oh my gosh. I uninstalled the Samsung NVMe driver and it boots normal now. Seems my system does not like driver v3.0.0.1802 from Samsung.
Thanks for the help folks. It should have dawned on me right away to try this. Now if I could just get IRST to recognize my Raid0 drive as compatible I'd be all good.

Thanks much
Roger

What's more is that the system boots in 10 seconds again. Quick question... my two Samsung 850 Evo 500GB Raid0 drives were a volume in my old system. The volume now works very well with speeds over 1000 R/W but IRST says it is incompatible. Is there a way to repair this? I have wiped both drives, re-initiated them, and built a new volume, yet IRST still says incompatible.

I looked up post code 97 and saw where one guy said that it could be GPU initilization.   The M.2 shares sata ports 4/5   Anything there?   Try uninstalling your video cards, use onboard video and keep both M.2 in place and see if it happens.  That would rule out gpu or M.2 drive.

"M.2 Key-M (80mm, Top) – x4 o M.2 Enable/Disable is set within the BIOS o This M.2 Key-M slot shares lanes with SATA ports 4/5. Installing an M.2 device will disable SATA ports 4/5."

I don't have that board but on the dark version, you can disable PCIe lane with a toggle switch if you have a loop.   You can always leave your cards on the loop and just pull them away from the slots.   My loop would support two cards like that temporarily.   Whenever I get post costs, I start yanking things one by one until I get a clean boot.  Then put things back in one by one to see what variable it is.   That also included nonessential things plugged into the USB ports.

Re: Z390 FTW + 9900K + 3200MHz CL14 Cold Boot Issue 2019/01/28 19:02:53 (permalink)
Thanks for the reply Delirious,
This board does not have on-board graphics support. That was going to be one of my tests. I thought of pulling the 980 Ti from my other rig and testing that if the NVMe driver trick didn't work. There is plenty of room to pull the card and let is hang/lay on the PSU cover and still attach another card. Then I was going to try the BIOS version change. But after uninstalling the Samsung NVMe driver and letting Windows handle it the system runs really great so I think I will leave well-enough alone.

As for the SATA ports you are correct about the upper M.2 socket deactivating SATA ports 4/5. I do not have anything plugged in to 4/5. The lower M.2 socket seems to be on it's own on this board. My OS drive (970 Pro) is in the lower socket and programs are on the upper (970 Evo) socket.

My 850 Evo RAID0 volume is plugged into SATA ports 2/3 and should work fine. I built the array in BIOS and Windows recognizes it and the speeds are outstanding but IRST says it is incompatible.

Thanks again and have a good evening.
Roger

I wish I never installed this Driver, It killed all my rigs under 1809.
Let's hope that 3.1 is a better driver than 3.0 was.

Hello Delirious,
Yes, all is running very well again, thank you.

I ran my 3200 CL14 @ 3333 CL14 with stock voltage for several weeks. The other day I went to 3400 maintaining CL14 but had to bump voltage to 1.40. So far so good. I don't know how much difference it really makes but hey, if it will run it.... "RUN IT"

By the way, if I may be so bold, I would like to share a slideshow of my build. I'm a concrete mixer truck driver with a bit of computer enthusiasm on the side. This is my first real "custom" build. I'm quite happy with it and look forward to building another.

Yes Sir. It was the Samsung NVMe driver v3.0. I uninstalled it and things worked great. Days after v3.1 came out and I tried that. It worked without troubles, however the speeds and system response times were not as good as the stock Windows NVMe driver. I am now running the Windows driver with satisfaction.

Thanks for checking on me.

If you are having the same trouble as me and you're running Samsung NVMe v3.0 driver then you can update to driver version 3.1 from Samsung. Most are having good luck with it.
Alternately you can go to Control Panel > Programs & Features and uninstall the Samsung NVMe driver, reboot, test. Windows will install a basic NVMe driver on the reboot. I find this to be my best option for my system.

So did you succeed in solving your issue ?
