Can these llr tasks use more than 4 cores efficiently?

Currently running llrMEGA on my dual e5-2680 rig (16 cores, HT off). I was running 2 tasks on 8 cores each. So one task per actual CPU. 45-60 minutes for each task. Just made it run 4 tasks on 4 cores each and they are still finishing at 45-60 minutes..

Wish I would have noticed this earlier.. like 25 days ago..

It was sure taking up 100% of the resources, but literally making no difference. weird.

I'd say 2 minute difference for half the work is not "faster". Lol. And Hyperthreading IS off. 16 logical processors, 16 cores.

This is confusing the  out of me.

I see your server running like this:

T630 Server
MT8
https://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=976898607
Run time 595.00
CPU time 4,066.58

so what the  is happening here? Maybe windows 10 vs server??

No, I think it is more with having HT Enabled over being Disabled is all.

I was going off this for your CPU

Did you look at the picture above? 16 cores. 16 logical. It would say 32 logical if HT was enabled.

lol, its cool. but still!! this is confusing the  out of me. I can only come to the conclusion that windows 10 does not handle dual cpu's properly and server does.

That could be as well, I'm gonna install a test copy of windows server after the month ends and see if it can get it to max out. The weird s*** you run into when running PG for a month

PG was sure kind enough to "point out" I needed to clean my i5-2500k system:

Windows Server really is only needed with 4 or more Processors.
But I do remember someone posted about an upcoming version of Windows 10 Pro and Below will not Support 2 Processors and will have to go to Windows 10 Workstation.

looking at this page is casing some concern especially the part that says: *** Intel Xeon processors are supported on Windows 10 Pro for Workstations and Windows 10 Enterprise only

yet it list xeon as being supported in every version.. but has *** after it.. confusing!!! and I'm currently up and running with no errors and completely stable (for 2+ years now). What in the **** windows???

I suspect bcavnaugh is right about the difference in instruction sets.

https://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=976898607 <- bcav's lists "Using all-complex FMA3 FFT"
https://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=976829413 <- devlin's lists "Using all-complex AVX FFT"

According to this link, FMA3 was introduced with Intel's Haswell (E5-2600 v3) and Broadwell (E5-2600 v4) chips.

LLRMEGA tasks are not very big for being mega and do not scale real well.
Add in the fact the e5-26xx Xeons have a good size (20mb)L3 cache that most likely fits 2 tasks.
You can try running 3 or 4 on each CPU and see how well it scales and if it fits in the cache.
If you have a fast processor and fast mem in quad channel you may want to run one task per core
The e5-26xx CPUs do not have FMA3, if the CPU has FMA3, that is what will be used over AVX.x

Life is too short to carry a cheap pocket knife
