Well, its been a while since I built or upgraded a system.  I recently purchased a 1060 GTX SC 6GB and a 650W 80+ Gold PS to upgrade my somewhat struggling 3 year old HP PC.
My System :  I7-4970K 4.0Ghz (Water cooled)
                    16 GB Ram
                    960 GTX 2GB
                    500W 80+ PS
                    250 GB SSD Boot Drive
                    2 TB 7200 Data Drive
                    Nothing OC'ed, just stock.

Most of the games I play are killing the 960 - 100% GPU & over 100% Vram usage while the processor is usually in the 30-50% range.  (Those games - Civ V, Cities:Skylines, Farm Manager 2018, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Batman series, etc.)  Mostly older titles (or engines) that shouldn't be horribly taxing, but the percentages don't lie.

The system doesn't run hot.  It does get a bit noisy at full load.

I guess I should get to the point.  Was the 1060 6GB a wise choice to alleviate this bottleneck?  The PS was purchased as a safety and efficiency measure.  (The stock 500W PS is over 3 years old and thought I would replace it before I HAD to replace it.)  If I figured - on paper - correctly the original system was about 75% on the 500W at around 80% efficiency while the new 650 with the 1060GTX (+40W vs the 960GTX) should load at around 50% to 60% at around 92% efficiency.  So even with the 40W higher demand (about 10%-12% higher) the 12% higher efficiency of the 650 PS should just about cover it.  Plus the lower loading should lower thermal stress and allow the PS to have a longer life.  I am trying to get another couple of years with this system before I have to build a newer system.

Was the 1060 GTX SC 6GB a good upgrade for this system?  (Should it be able to alleviate most of this bottleneck?)
Are my thoughts on the PS upgrade valid?
Do you see any problems I might encounter?

Thanks in advance for any feedback or advice.

Definitely a good upgrade, most games are now memory hogs and that 2GB available just doesn't cut it.

I hope that the extra 4GBs will suffice for a while.  Also curious to find out if the gpu load will drop.  30% cpu and 100% gpu isn't very balanced.  I understand that the 4790k (I had a typo in the system stats, I am sure you had a chuckle) is still a monster single core performer.  As I understand, most games don't utilize multi core much so the old gray cpu (Devil's Canyon, chuckle) is still pretty good.  I would prefer to see a more balanced cpu/gpu ratio though.

You want 100% on the gpu as that tells you the gpu is being used to its full potential.

I know this is a bit off subject.

I am running 2x1080p monitors.  Is it possible (with the equipment I am installing) to run 1x1440p monitor and 1x1080p monitor?  I only game on one of the monitors and really have no need for that kind of resolution on the second monitor.

100% agreed with Sajin, it will be a night and day upgrade. The 1060 6GB is going to be an amazing leap in performance over the GTX 960 which has about the same performance as a GTX 670 from 2012. In my testing the GTX 1060 was often even faster(especially as drivers have matured more and more) then the GTX 980. Running 1x 1440p monitor and 1x 1080p monitor will not be an issue whatsoever.

Thanks for the feedback.  Hopefully I won't have any trouble installing these parts.  It seems pretty straight forward as far as the video card.  Hoping that I don't get lost in the wiring of the new power supply.  Also hoping that I, in fact, interpreted the listing on the PS and it comes with all the wires I will need.  I would assume that getting the factory "knot" of wiring out of the middle of the case should improve airflow.

Any tricky parts I should look out for wiring the PS?  I haven't looked online yet for a board diagram.  Not sure one is available as it is a HP rebranded MSI board.

The model of the PSU would be helpful. The model of your existing HP computer would be helpful. Any reasonable quality PSU should have all the connections you need and then some based on your description.

My mistake.  It is a EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2, 80+ GOLD 650W specifically.

    Good news.

Everything went pretty well.  Everything fit.  The only snag I had was my optical drive takes what looks like a miniature SATA power cable which, of course, the power supply didn't come with.  Not a big worry since I have only used it once in the last year or so.  I have an external optical drive that is far faster.

I was worried, a little, that I was going to have issues with the 1060GTX because my bios is so old (8/25/2015).  Yes, I looked into updating it.  And, unless I deciphered the mess that is HP support, they really don't want to talk about it.  Not being a "top of the line" builder/trouble shooter, I decided to leave it be since it works.  Everything I found out about the bios read something like, "If you are a computer technician and don't mind having a seizure, here is a way to maybe update the bios on that machine." That is paraphrased and probably exaggerated but, that is what it felt like after reading for about an hour on why HP doesn't have an update for this bios.  Anyway, it seems to work so I am relieved.

The system upgrade did more than I was expecting.  Everything is faster.  The games I mentioned will 100% use the gpu, but the 6gb is covering the memory needs very well.

Thanks for all the support.  Your confidence in my abilities helped me through the process.  And, thanks EVGA  for delivering quality products for a decent price.
