Hello all. Thanks for reading.

I am currently running a 850 Pro SATA in an X99/5930k (with no M.2 slot)
No issues, just want to upgrade the SSD.

I'm thinking of purchasing the following as a (boot drive OS Win 10):
- Samsung 970 EVO M.2 SSD | https://www.newegg.com/Pr...147690&ignorebbr=1
- A PCIe M.2 card like this possibly | https://www.newegg.com/Pr...G64913&ignorebbr=1

My question is: Will this AIC M.2 card support the speeds of the SSD which is 3400 MBPS.
I'm worried it will be slow.
Also will this drive be bootable OS

Thanks for any input, its appreciated.

The card you listed is a pcie 3.0 x4. Theoretically that should be 4000 mb/s, so yeah it would be fast enough for the 970 evo. The real question i would be asking is if anyone knows if the x99 motherboard will detect the m.2 card through a pcie slot in the bios.

I run boot in Legacy mode instead of uefi due to RAID. Not sure if that have impact.

I was running a 960 EVO on my X99 Classified board as the boot drive.  I was using this > https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=1Z5-0018-00020

I ran it with a full UEFI setup.  Just do a fresh OS install to your 970 with no other drives attached until after you have the OS installed.

:o i thought motherboard nvme slots are fasters than the pcie cards.
does exist pcie card with 16x speed ? (i know there are lot that can be installed on 16x pcie port but are only 4x speed)

The person above (post #8) shows some big differences using an M2 slot vs the pcie adapter.  Not sure why.  I tested my 960 on my X299 platform both ways and the results were within margin of error for both.

Even though the pcie adapter can be placed in a x16 slot, it will still run at x4 speed.

I have been unable to acquire a Samsung 970 EVO as everyone has them back ordered.
Hopefully after Christmas I will be able to purchase one, and I'm also still researching which PCIe card to get.
I see alot of PCIe 2.0 cards rather then 3.0 which might make a difference.

Also when testing, keep in mind some SSDs are faster then others, so just because you don't see that much difference from m.2 to PCIe slot.

Also, My board has no M.2 slot so I have to use PCIe

My main concern is will this work as a boot drive, if not will even work as secondary storage
(I will not be using UEFI Mode) I use Legacy due to RAID 0 for my less aggressive games.
Games like Star Citizen will go an SSD like the 970 EVO via PCIe3.0

I wonder if anyone can confirm that an M.2 to PCIe (3.0) adapter will at least be detected and used as a secondary storage SSD while in Legacy Mode

As soon as I add something in my cart, it gets removed due to no longer available, I just got tired of trying.
probably Christmas orders getting canceled or something. Same thing with the RTX 1080 Black I want.
I decided to just wait until after New Years, when all the return stock has been cycled through.
I have a problem with buying things that have shipped several times during the holidays, plus I want to order my items together.

There are multiple items, either the prices change, it goes out of stock on several items.
And, I have also purchased Christmas Gifts as well. So I am putting this upgrade off untill after New Years.
The 970 EVO price has now increased at Newwegg, and Bestbuy.

I try to buy local whenever possible, And yes even if buying from Amazon not 3rd party you can still get knock off.
I hate when Youtubers buy knock off and give a bad review of an item I have that is clearly better.
Or friends that I recommend an item to, and they say it's flimsy and broke real easy.
I know Amazon says they stand behind it though.

We have an issue here where people are stealing packages from our porch.
They actually follow UPS drivers around ans steal the packages.
The last job I worked I watched the UPS guy drop packages off at the gate next a busy raod, the house is 500/600 ft from the gate. it was 4 packages, I could not believe it.
So it is best to order all at once to minimize package count, and have it delivered to a facility USPS/UPS/Fedex etc.. and pick them up there.
So if I purchase like 10 items, and from different E-Tailers I will be driving around picking up packages, and don't have time for that.

I do appreciate the help though.

There should be no issue with NVME support on X99. Support was added as far back as X79. I have tested a 960 evo and a 950 pro in my X79 RIVE using a pcie adapter card. I have not tested using it as a boot drive but have read that it is supported.

    Awesome, I appreciate the info..

Yeah I also think it will be fine as a secondary drive. The boot drive may pose some issues, especially if not using uefi mode.
I really don't want to sacrifice my 5TB Raid 0 I use for games, It's super fast. Just certain things I need to be on a super fast SSD.
I do have the 850 PRO SATA3 SSD for the OS right now. So I can keep that as is, and have the NVME for certain programs that require faster seek.

that's because the m.2 slot on the x99 classified is only pcie 2.0 x4 and not 3.0 x4 you are also on x299 so you wont see an improvement running a card

     PE1 – x16 (x8 if PE2 is used)  <-1080 ti
     PE2 – x8
     PE3 – x8
     PE4 – x16 (x8 if PE3 is used) <- pcie 3.0 nvme expansion card installed here
     PE5 – x4 (Gen 2 only, 4 lanes pulled from PCH)
PE6 – x8 <- some reason enabled some kind of pcie hot swap function i could right click and eject the ssd so i moved the ssd to pe4

:o i thought motherboard nvme slots are fasters than the pcie cards.
does exist pcie card with 16x speed ? (i know there are lot that can be installed on 16x pcie port but are only 4x speed)

You're right.  I forgot about that.  It's been awhile since I was running my X99 Classy...

FWIW, I decided to try this  in our x99 micro 2 (https://www.amazon.com/QNINE-Adapter-Express-Controller-Expansion/dp/B075MDH28Y/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1547309320&sr=8-5&keywords=qnine+pcie+ssd+to+m.2+key+m+adapter+card) with a 500gb 970 evo. Just put it in for a fast, gaming fps drive. (Not boot drive) Easily done with over 3500 mb/sec read times.

Yes, had to download the driver from samsung. After that it was pretty much plug and play.

I ended up ordering this https://www.wd.com/products/internal-ssd/wd-black-sn750-nvme-ssd.html#WDS100T3XHC
Western Digital SN750 NVME SSD 1TB with EK Heatsink.

I could not resist the free 2TB WD Black.

I had put in my email address a while back to reserve one.
I got an email yesterday they had become available, and got a free WD Black 2TB with purchase at Western Digital store.
(The 500GB version comes with a free 1TB WD Black)

I ordered this PCIe card. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GFDVXVJ/
It doesn't look like any real circuitry here, just adapts the slots contacts from what I can see.

I may install this into the Hot Swap PCIe slot (LOL)

Will see how this goes with Legacy boot / RAID Enabled
I will post my results here.
