Winter Solstice Challenge  Dec 11 22:23:00 to Dec 21 22:23:00 (UTC)   Sub project GFN21

From the PG thread.

Welcome to the Winter Solstice Challenge

The Final Challenge of the 2018 Challenge series is upon us. The Winter Solstice Challenge will be a 10 day celebration on account of the winter solstice. The challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's Generalized Fermat Prime Search n=21 application. Come join us and warm yourself by the Solstice fires!

The Winter Solstice...a predictable event in nature that has occurred for billions of years. A way point in the cyclic motion of the Universe. Many of the today's major winter festivals and celebrations can trace their origins back to this event...the longest night of the year (or the shortest day).

We'd like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday...whatever festival or celebration you may observe.

NOTE: 88% of the world's population lives in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, we'll observe winter. However, the Southern Hemisphere will be experiencing the Summer Solstice.

This GFN-project is part of the challenge:
GFN-21

These GFN-projects are NOT part of the challenge:
GFN-15
GFN-16
GFN-17 LOW
GFN-17 MEGA
GFN-18
GFN-19
GFN-20
GFN-22

    It has not started Yet!
    Time until Winter Solstice challenge:
    3      02      15   24
    Days Hours Min Sec
    To go before it starts.

    Remember that any Task Downloaded before the Start time will Not Count.
    Being they are very long Tasks I would wait to download Task after the Clock starts to Count down to the End.
    Or 15 minutes after the start Dec 11 22:23:00 UTC

    The time in the red circle is PG servers time. Hit F5 to refresh, it is a snapshot of the time and does not move.
    The count down clock goes off your systems time clock, so it can be off.
    As long as you are past the servers time in the red circle you can download and run a task.

    No CPU tasks for me either. Did a test run on my 5930K and ETA's were 500+ hours. Guess it's time to upgrade lol.

    You can set the CPU to run multitask with an app_config file. That makes all the cores work on just one task at a time.
    Just like SMP was to folding at home. It will greatly cut down the time to do a task to a day or less depending on the CPU and speed and memory speed......

    C&P this to your app_config file. Change the nimber 4 (on both lines below where you see the 4) to how many cores/threads you want to use.

    app_config>
    <app>
    <name>genefer</name>
    <gpu_versions>
    <gpu_usage>1.0</gpu_usage>
    <cpu_usage>0.1</cpu_usage>
    </gpu_versions>
    </app>
    <app_version>
    <app_name>genefer</app_name>
    <cmdline>-nt 4</cmdline>
    <plan_class>cpuGFN21</plan_class>
    <avg_ncpus>4</avg_ncpus>
    </app_version>
    </app_config>

    To make an app_config file it is best to use NotePad
    Open NotePad C&P that info up there to notepad.
    Under File, Hit Save as
    Choose all files with the drop down right under where you put the name you want.
    Now name the file app_config.xml
    Hit save
    Now put that file you just made into the www.primegrid.com folder.
    You fine that under C: , program data, BOINC, projects, www.primegrid.com

    In order to see the program data dir. you will have to show hidden files and folders in windows settings.

    Good start, 3rd place so far. Going to be tough catching AMD Users and the guy with like 40 Tesla’s.

    Edit: whoops the standings just changed dramatically. 6th now.

    I just completed a 4t cpu task in 46 hours on a 3570k in linux. The windows task still has more than 5 hours to go and it started 20 minutes earlier than the linux task. Windows is using a 2500k.

    The credit is similar to the gpu tasks.

    I feel like an idiot. Setup my PC the other day and started running it. Haven't been around to check it until just now and realized I've done NO units. I had it set to GPU only for the project, but in the program had GPU set to suspend. Sorry, epic fail on my part...

    Well for me one morning I started up and things were going well until I realized that my GPUs were running GPUGRID and not Genefer 21

    Shout out to Mektacular, geos52 and NerdGZ as well!

    Indeed

    Sorry this is what happens when I don't bake the Pies, that is the Default Pie from Free-DC and they only pull the top 10.
    When members hide their Hosts I cannot see what Applications they are running.
    We have high Points for some members but they are also not running Genefer 21 so hard to pull stats.
