I'm thinking of buying the EVGA GeForce GT 730 4GB DDR3 128bit Dual DVI mHDMI Graphics Cards 04G-P3-2739-KR from Amazon. The requirements say
- 300 Watt or greater power supply with a minimum of 20 Amp on the +12 volt rail.****
- PCI Express, PCI Express 2.0 or PCI Express 3.0 compliant motherboard with one graphics slot.

I have an XPS 8300 (460w PS) and want to have a 4K monitor or 3 monitors. I cannot tell if the PowerSupply has 20 amp minimum or a +12v rail??? It has a PCI express slot but don't know if it is 3.0 compliant motherboard. Does some one here know or can tell me how to find out?  TIA

Welcome to the forums!

The 730 is a low-power card, and won't be close to those limits. The board should be at least PCIe 2.0, and the card is PCIe 2.0, so you're fine there.

You can look on the back of the case for the service tag, then use that on the Dell support site to look up all the specs.

The only concern is that it's an older pre-UEFI motherboard, and may not be compatible with a 700-series card. Check with Dell for any available BIOS updates before installing the card.

so the rail question is ok too? I've tried to contact Dell with an identical question (no response) but not the pre-UEFI issue you brought up. If it does not meet this reqirement what options do i have to get either 3 monitors or a 4K single monitor? integrated card does 1 HDMI, 1 SVGA.

TIA

Yes, your psu has 32 amps on the 12v rail.

The best card you could likely run on that PC would be a GT 630. It doesn't require extra power, and can run up to 2 extra displays. The 1GB 64-bit DDR3 version might run 4k, but only at 30Hz.

Unfortunately, we've discontinued everything in the 600 line. If you're not beyond looking at the secondhand market, look for the part number 01G-P3-2631-KR, 02G-P3-2639-KR, or 01G-P3-2632-KR (the "02G" models have 2GB of RAM).

If you can use the onboard video and an add-in card at the same time (check your BIOS settings), you could use a GF210 512-P3-1310-LR to run 2 displays from that and one from the onboard.

Looks like the xps 8300 runs just fine with 1080 ti's, so a 730 shouldn't be a problem at all... https://www.userbenchmark...tem/Dell-XPS-8300/1296

Well, It's a 2nd-Gen i5/i7, and UEFI support was spotty. Some that shipped with Win7 may not have it. I think my Vostro with a i5-2560 has basic UEFI support with an updated BIOS. It runs win10 in that mode ok.

If it has UEFI support, then a 1030 may work.

Wow! great answers all. Much appreciated and thank you.

Dell couldn't tell me if my device was pre-UEFI. They preferred to upsell me to a new computer. Mine is old but works great. I think mine was the first with Sandy Bridge??? There is a BIOS upgrade available do you folks recommend that?

Re: Dell XPS 8300 2019/03/25 06:21:43 (permalink)
The XPS 8300 will support the 900 & the 1000 series nvidia cards as long as proper power is being supplied. I'm currently running a gtx970 on mine after up grading the psu with a 525w psu off the shelf of the local electronics store.(psu ISN'T propriatary) The new RTX series gpu's WON'T work with the dell bios on the XPS 8300! It tries to load, then just hangs. It's a dell bios issue, and they haven't released an update in years. That's the dis advantage to having an OEM board. They stop support so people will buy new. :)
