Hey guys,

I recently read about people running the Xeon processors in the x58 boards, so I decided to pick one up on eBay for cheap and try the mod myself. After a little solder work, I had my machine back up and running with the new processor. I'm still a bit green with overclocking, so I wanted to see if you guys had any input on how I have things set up in bios. Thanks in advance for the input :)

My Rig:
Intel Xeon X5650
EVGA Motherboard part number: 121-BL-E756-TR (EVGA X58 SLI Micro)
I'm running 24 GBs of Patriot memory PG34G1600EL
EVGA GeForce GTX 960 FTW (Part Number:02G-P4-2968-RX)
Power Supply: OCZ ModXStream Pro Power Supply ‑ 700W (Model ocz700mxsp)
For cooling I'm using a Cooler Master Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (Part Number-RR-212E-20PK-R2)

Looks pretty good from what I can remember overclocking the X58.
If you are happy with the temps and it's stable then I would say you did a good job.

Look good, if it were my system I would...
I would change the uncore to 3000-3200, that is 2x ram speed.
Set the memory command rate manually to 2T  try 1T once you know every thing is stable, Then see if it stays stable.
QPI feq. selection to the lower setting, 4.8 I think it is.
Maybe try to lower CPU V to 1.29, or lower if it is still stable.

I see you're using real temp for the CPU temps.
In the realtemp directory there is realtemGT app, use that. It will give you all 6 core temp.
If yo want to there are directions on the realtemp site on how to calibrate the software.

Thanks for the info Bill! I've taken all your suggested and everything seems to be running pretty stable now. I just have one question. As far as "Turbo Performance" and "Turbo Mode Function", should these be left disabled? I've heard yes and no.

Using the "Turbo Mode Function" while OC'ing is up to you.  When enabled it will increase your multiplier by 1 allowing you to use a lower bclock to achieve the same CPU clock speed.

The "Turbo performance" setting can be left on disabled.

You're welcome.
I always leave turbo enabled so I get the highest multiplier.
Also with realtempGT and seeing 6 cores, 1 or 2 cores will be 8-10 higher. It is normal, most everyone sees it.
That's why you can calibrate the software in settings.
Good luck with your new CPU.

I just dropped a w3680 in the one i bought from you and plan on pushing it to the limits lol

Hi mjdeiter,

Luckly I found this post from you. Thank you so much for this pictures. It helped me to think about another directions for what I am needing.
Just to clarify and comment, last year I had pushed my motherboard to work with 48Gb RAM and recently I was wondering if I could get IOMMU (VT-d Intel Virtualization Technology capability) from a Xeon processor on that board EVGA X58 SLI Micro (like mine and yours).
I was twisting my mind and researching about it,  until I see your BIOS Setup pictures ( that shows Virtualization Technology: Enabled) and CPU-z picture (that also show only VT-x capability enabled)
Even putting a Top processor of it's period this motherboard couldn't recognize VT-d capability and I know your processor have it (take a look in Advanced Technology of this URL)

Now I'm convinced that even if I make the mod or just change the processor for a XEON all would be in vain, because the board would not recognize it.
With VT-d / IOMMU I could give my virtual machines almost the same performance of the host by PCI Passthrough.
In other words a virtual machine could access the hardware directly and I was needing to get GPU Passthrough.

My Machine:
Intel i7-980X Extreme Edition 3.33 Ghz
EVGA X58 SLI Micro
EVGA GeForce GTX 690
I'm running 48 GB RAM : 6 x 8Gb  (1333mhz Ddr3 G.skill Ripjaws X)

Thank you again, bye :)

When I OC I like to set one by one thing and leave 2-3 days every change in real work to see how PC behave.
Than if something go wrong it's much easier to find culprit. Usually I set CPU Clock first than Cache clock than memory frequency and timmings last.
