please help me

my problem:
 my new evga rtx2080 ftw3 only supports 120hz refresh rate
however my monitor the benq zowie xl2735 supports 144hz

my old gtx970 runs @1440p and 144hz
but my new rtx2080 @1440p only runs at 120hz
 

when i set the monitor in the nvidia control panel to run at 144 hz
it flashes the screen and reverts back to 120hz hz every single time
 
i am aware that the specific model of monitor
will not display at 144hz while using audio
the bandwidth of the display port cable limits me to 120hz when i want to use audio on the monitor
how ever i use a sound card and run the monitor at 144hz with no sound being sent to it 
 
i have reinstalled the drivers 3 times clean install every time
i have done all the windows up dates
i have done a full windows refresh "wipe the drive and start again"
 
when i use my 970 it works fine i can select 144hz
when i use my 2080 i will only go as high as 120hz
 
using display port cable
 
please help me very frustrating
is there a bios for the gpu that sorts this out
what do i do

are the display ports on the rtx2080 ftw3 all the same
i tried using different display ports nothing changed

i got my benq xl2735 working by creating a custom resolution
of 1440p @ 143 or 145 hz
it really does not like 144 even if it displays for a few seconds in preview
i think it has some thing to do wiht pixel clock rate
as my 970 does 1440p @ 144hz just fine
but a 1080ti or my 2080 does not like that setting at all

another thing i found was windows or nvidia was causing massive blurring unless i use only one monitor
i use benq strobe utility to check its smooth

so even if you get your monitor displaying a picture
check your not getting a blurry image
