David Wang, Senior Vice President of Engineering at AMD's Radeon Technologies Group, told so in an interview on the Japanese gaming website 4Gamer. Overclock3D confirmed the comments with the assistance of a Japanese speaker who helped to translate the interview without misunderstandings. It's important to clarify that what Wang said was "a personal view", not an official statement from AMD. It looks AMD doesn't want to jump into Ray Tracing until it knows that it catches on with customers. NVIDIA took the risk as they have a lot more cash to spend. AMD has to take a 'wait and see' approach.

It's not all that surprising. Both AMD and Nvidia cater to DirectX runtimes. I look at DXR as Nvidia's latest gotcha for disruptive tech. Last few examples from AMD were FreeSync and before that Eyefinity. Remember when Eyefinity came out it took 2-3 years before Nvidia specifications cough up with Nvidia Surround. Won't be surprised if AMD has to take 2-3 years in order to properly bake in DXR into the chipsets. Chipset designs take years. What I find a bit disturbing is that we didn't hear about DXR from Microsoft until after RTX was a buzzword. That tells me that Microsoft is playing games with neutrality. That's not good for consumers.

I have this feeling that raytracing in our PC games will go the way of VR headsets , 3D vision goggles, PhysX add-in cards  and the dodo bird .

Seeing as AMD seems to be focusing on mid-range video cards as their primary and that functional RT at decent frame rates is really restricted to the realm of top tier cards, it wouldn't make much sense to incorporate it into their lineup.  If it catches on and the tech matures, the next gen or two might make it more feasible.

and if Intel manages to bring in RT with their GPU - amd will be holding the bag in... 3rd place?

AMD better realize Intel is joined this game and they need to stay ahead of them - else Intel takes Market share from them

Intel is the wildcard.  Who knows what they'll come out with.
