Hi,

I'm running into a problem and would appreciate some help. I am replacing a GTX 1050 with a 1080 FTW DT.
Motherboard Asus Prime Z370A. Power supply is an OCZ OCZGXS700 (700 watt).

There doesn't seem to be enough power options to connect the card. Other than the cables to connect the drives, the main supply to the motherboard, and the power connector for the CPU, the only other power connectors are two 6 pin PCI power connectors. I have no 8 pin power connectors from the PS.

There are two adapters that came with the 1080; each offers a male 8 pin on the side that plugs into the 1080 and two female that accepts the PCI plugs mentioned above. So I can fulfill one of the power slots in the 1080 but I can't fill the other 8 pin slot.

If I'm using this card alone, not in SLI, am I OK using just the one 8 pin plug, or do I have an issue where I must get a different power supply?

FWIW, the GTX 1050 had no auxillary power running to it and seemed to work beautifully, no issues. Perhaps the power from the mobo along with that one power plug filled is enough?
 ---
As an afterthought, can I just connect one of the 6 pin from the PS to the adapter and connect the other 6 pin to the other adapter which would have power to each of the 8 pin 1080 plugs? It looks like they want two 6 pin for each 8 pin but perhaps not? The manual is woefully unhelpful. I found a plug which adapts one 6 pin to an 8 for EVGA, but the two adapters that come with the 1080 are Y connectors.

Thanks!

You can buy Dual SATA to 8-Pin PCIe and Dual 4-pin peripheral (Molex) to 8-Pin PCIe adapters if you have the extra connectors hanging around..I'd just get another PSU that has the needed 6+2-pin or 8-pin PCIe connectors, that would be the best thing to do.

You can use the OuterVision PSU Calculator to estimate your PC wattage need and see some recommended PSUs..EVGA recommends a 500-Watt or greater unit for PCs using that graphics card.

    Thanks Bob,

I just checked out the pins and the two adapters included with the 1080 do not have parallel connections, I found my other desktop has one of the 8 pin connectors and two of the 6+2 adapters. I'll just switch PS as I'm not using any of the PCI connectors in that computer.

Sure would be helpful if EVGA supplied more thorough instructions.

    Yeah, that would be best.

    And thanks for the welcome.

I don't do gaming though with this card I'll owe it to myself to get a few games in there. I used the GTX 1050 mostly for its cores as I let the computer run 24/7 and the number of cores allows me to do more work units with BOINC. I donate the computer time to working on Cancer markers and this 1080 will get far more work done. The only other use thus far is watching movies via the computer & the OLED TV.
