Seagate has published a product roadmap showing the evolution of their HDDs in the next few years. According to that roadmap, we'll be able to buy a 100 TB hard drive in 2025. Seagate expects to have 20 TB HAMR-HDDs by 2020, and from that moment on they'll continue to work on this technology to launch 36 TB HDDs by 2022, 48 TB drives before 2024 and that 100 TB units in 2025. HAMR will enable double areal density growth each 2.5 years according to Seagate. Looks like Seagate also has confidence in HDDs for many years to come.

We will see how this goes. Usually things are easier to improve at the beginning, then it becomes more and more difficult to get every little extra.
Take a look at how difficult it is right now to shrink to 10nm and beyond in the cpu world and how easy it was before.
Even take a look at the PMR curve in the same graph and what they expect to do with HAMR.

I'm not sure what makes them think they can exponentially increase capacity without a single problem, but it really looks quite optimistic to me.
Of course, I would love to be wrong about this.

I foresee 100 TB HDDs being only used in the enterprise environment. Consumers will probably only see up to 24 TB by 2025 due to price and availability.

I could see 100TB but I don’t think it will be HDD. I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t SSD first. I kind of think by 2025 HDD will probably be going away.

My initial thought is with 100TB hard drives, all of our internet connections better get faster (and less metered).

Digital storage requirements for most people has actually declined significantly. Not even sure what one would fill with a 100tb HDD.

It seems like a lot from today's perspective, but don't worry, software and game devs will catch up by the time 100TB drives will be ready.

Expecting games installations to increase by 10 fold in 7 years so you can only fit 100 of them on a 100TB drive?

Based on read/write speeds of a spindle drive, how many days of nonstop writing would be required just to fill it or transfer all the files off of it for backup? Practical limitations start coming into play with capacities like this and the i/o speed of spindle drives.
