Has anyone seen a guesstimation for when DDR5 for desktops might arrive on the scene?

I thought we were skipping PCIe 4.0 for PCIe 5.0, since 5.0 is coming out next year. Oh, and DDR5 is out next year too.

Basically, there is no good reason to implement 4.0, when 5.0 is already in the pipe.

I wouldn't be so dismissive, since I only sighted the top 3 of thousands of articles sighting the 5.0 planned release next year. I'd be more concerned that the industry is looking to take advantage of customers possibly forced into the shortest upgrade cycle in history.

It isn't being skipped, but I haven't seen wholesale adoption. To clarify, I'm hoping the board makers don't skip 5.0, because they commit to 4.0 and push motherboards using it for the next ten years. I'd much prefer we have PCIe 5.0 motherboards by 2020 and spend the next five to ten years on that standard.

I see no reporting on a x24 slot. I see literally thousands of articles talking about the approach PCIe 5.0. I'm basing my opinion on the reported scheduling and articles by reputable journalists. I'm sure you're knowledgeable, but I hope you're wrong. We stayed at 3.0 too long. The standards of 4.0 and 5.0 have been reported to be very close together for the past two years. It would be very sad to have the industry marry 4.0, when 5.0 is screaming, "Wait up, I'm almost there." While I've been following this for the past year, I could be wrong, but wow man, why would any of us want me to be wrong about this?! Fast is better, and getting a doubling of the expected speed increase in such a short time will be glorious. Who would be against that?!

Pragmatism is the key to a good build. You must build based on needs and what's available.

Many of your articles show that pci 4.0 was supposed to be released already, and only one or two boards utilize it. Just because you have one article that states it is coming and thousands repeating what that one article states doesn’t mean that is how it will work. We had thousands of articles stating a colts gaming gpu was going to be released in 2017-2018... yet.. here we sit with the Turing GPUs and not a single Volta gaming gpu.

Wiki can be edited by anyone, so I wouldnt necessarily use it as my main source of information. Pcisig would be a better source and their articles conflict plenty as is.

You can spam thousands of articles. Just remember, they all stem from one article and get interpreted from there.. no one has different news.

AMD stated that their new GPU will use PCI 4.0, so I wouldn’t put a whole heck of a lot of stock into Wikipedia and certain news sites until info is released from intel and AMD stating which will be on motherboards.

Couldn't they release a PCI 4.0 card and have it work on a PCI 5.0 slot? I expect that they would have backwards support so the card could come out with the 4.0 support and 5.0 could be a year out. That said I don't really expect to see 5.0 as soon as some others do but I expect AMD to put a feature like 4.0 support into a card even if support isn't ready and then I expect when support does come it to not make that much of a difference.

Well, you are on top of it though. And about whether the build is a need or a want. I guess in terms of survival, a new computer is a want, but in terms of your agenda and the needs to accomplish that, having internet is a need. I only suggest doing a build now to meet those requirements (in a very cost conscious way), and consider a more expensive build in 2020 to continue meeting those needs for a longer term (6 to 10 years). But please, don't let me spend your money for you. Let's just stay on top of this topic together, and voice our wants to EVGA, so they can meet them when things become available.
