Greetings, Friends,
I bought what was listed as "EVGA GeForce GTX 770 FTW - 4GB DDR5 - FTW" (auction number 223189392314) and since this is my first MAC Pro(3,1), I don't know much about them except that the EVGA 770 GTX is compatible. I got the card home and plugged it in to find it reporting only 2G ram. The MAC seems to like it, and it boots up fine. (no labelling on the entire card shows RAM, AFAIK.)
I paid $132 for it, but thought I was getting a good deal on the ~200 dollar 4gb cards. The PN sticker is ripped off, so I can't identify the card; (is there any other way to tell what card this is?) -By the ram and case (and no bios switch), it appears to be an 02G-P4-3772-B1, and was NEVER a 4Gb card.
I hate giving someone my money if they purposefully tricked me, but answers to the following Qs will help me "deal with it." :-)
1. Is this an (comparable/competitive) adequate price for what I got?
2. Will I be dissatisfied in the long run with the lower RAM? (I don't game with this box; I use business software and may hook up 3 screens at some point for spreadsheets.)
3. How can you tell what the cards are if the sticker is ripped off the back?
Thx in advance for any advice; based on the responses, I will either let the jerk have a "win", or use Ebay's return path.

Hello,
Welcome to the forums. You could use GPU-Z to see what a lot of the specs for the card and it could give you a better idea of what you have. You can then compare that to what the going price is and you could make your decision based on the going rates of the like card. Another bit of information for you is that the card would not have a warranty as it would be second hand without a serial number. You did not mention warranty so just wanted to add it in.

I would return it if the stickers are not proper and gpu-z shows anything other than the properly displayed information.
More than likely the card is out of warranty anyway because it is nearly 5 years old, but there is no reason for you to risk a card someone mistreated.

thx for both answers; this is strictly a "used card" discussion with no warranty; bummer for me that gpu-z program is pc-only, but i may spin it up in one of my windows boxes just to see. (I may need the evidence for ebay, anyways, since the seller has already said he is fighting me...) . I don't see how i can lose since he said "4gb" and it is "2gb".
I am surprised that there is zero way to ID the card physically... amazing.

You could take the cooler off to id the card, but I highly suggest against that, 100%, until you find a way to identify the card with software.
If you open the card, the seller may refuse the return. I suggest avoiding that until you can verify it isn’t an error in the Mac software. It may very well be a 4gb card.

If you take the card apart the gpu chip itself should be marked with "GK104-425" that will confirm it's a 770. e.g.  If the back of the card doesn't show any vram modules than it's a 2GB card. e.g 4GB:  2GB:

Didn't even think about the missing VRAM on the back of the card. Good call Sajin! GoeffHubbard, You may be able to talk to the seller and work out a deal for the mistaken identity. Just explain what happened and see what they say. They may do a partial refund to keep from receiving a bad review.

Then force a refund. The ad states a 4gb card, not a 2 gb card. Nowhere does it state a 2gb card would be delivered. eBay will side with you as the seller mislabeled the product.

Thx to all; the seller finally got around to reading his own auction and realized he'd mislabeled it... sheesh! bummer for me is that he is apparently broke and can't pull the money together to start the return... He said he'll do it soon... we'll see, but this concludes my questions on this thread.

Just a word of advice for future, Ebay is one of the worst places to pickup a GPU these days, way too many untrustworthy and dishonest sellers doing exactly, what happened here, or taking it even further and flashing cards. If you're looking to find a good 2nd hand card at a good price, EVGA's B-Stock page frequently has awesome deals(Especially on Wednesdays), and even offer a 1-Year warranty. Hope your situation get's rectified.

Thanks to all for advice; Ebay had to step in and give me my money back, as the seller never straightened up and flew right... I've mailed away the 2G card on an ebay RMA, and once Ebay saw it delivered, they paid my money back... -glad to be out of that!
(I bought and SLI'd a cuople of 4G 770 GTXs and the Mac Pro is humming nicely on 3 wide screens (needed external power though, a little clunky there, but manageable for a desktop... )

Surprised ebay stepped in, they typically act in favor of what costs them less, not what is best for the customer. I've had ebay rule against me on a few things because they didn't want to deal with the issue.

Also ebay enforces a 30day return policy (up from 14day)... Maybe some of the details from the poster have been left out. Its actually worse to be a seller and you can get scammed.

You are not kidding. I sold 4 1070 Ti(s) in August and one of the buyers did just that. Person made a new account same day as auction ended then drove the price up. I debated not shipping the card but did anyway and as sure as the sun rises, he claimed item not as described. Ebay immediately reversed the charges and I had to pay to ship it back. He sent back a different card, a GT 610 to be exact. Luckily, I had taken several pictures of the card including the serial number on my posting. I think because it was a new account and I had 3 other sales with no issues, eBay actually sided with me and I got the money back, minus the shipping cost I had to spend to get the wrong card back. On a side note, that GT 610 is a terrible card and cannot run much of anything... lol Selling electronics is scary on eBay, scammers and high fees (ebay + PayPal) turns me off from selling stuff on there.
