I know, this isn't exactly a 9900K or an RTX 2080 Ti build, and the majority of the audience here is going to be bored with server grade types of builds, but nevertheless I'll share my NAS upgrade progress.

In my current NAS (see specs in the signature) I'm running 8 x 3TB drives in RAID-Z, and I've been running this configuration since 2010, and now I have less than 4TB free left, so it's time to expand.

So I decided to go with 8 x 8TB drives.

I know larger drives exist, but 8TB drives have the best price to capacity ratio, and they are even cheaper if you buy external drives and disassemble them. With external drives it's always a lottery as you can't tell which drive is inside, and in my case I ended up with 4 white label WD80EZAZ's and 4 WD Red WD80EFAX's. Feature-wise both models are the same (8TB, 256MB, 5400RPM), and the differences are insignificant.

    This is huuuge.
(Relatively speaking, nowhere near Linus's 1PB project, but my old configuration resulted in 17.7TB usable).

    Transfer speeds are nice too.

And the new drives are waaaay quieter.

Now I just have to migrate all data from old drive onto my new pool.

The saga continues. I am upgrading my NAS, and with that I'm replacing old WD 3TB Green drives with new helium filled 8TB WD Red drives, which are designed for 24/7 NAS use.

    Old drives are out.

Assembling a system in a SFF case isn't always pretty. Because the PSU isn't modular, I desoldered unneeded PSU cables (8+6 pin PCI-e, 8 pin EPS, and extra molex and sata power cables) to reduce cable clutter. The only PSU cables left are 24 pin ATX, 4 pin EPS, SATA, and Molex.

Two drives are installed in the top 5.25" bay. Because the bay is a bit taller than a standard 5.25" bay, two drives fit easily with a dual 3.5" to 5.25" bracket adapter. The SSDs were just stuffed behind the front panel USB bracket, because SSDs had to be placed somewhere.

The other 6 drives are installed in the designated 3.5" bays.

I had to mod the middle drive cage a little. Large chunks of aluminum were dremeled out on both sides to help with the airflow.

Power cables modded to power white label WD80EZAZ drives. These drives don't start if 3.3V is present. I repurposed a molex power cable to avoid using additional adapters and splitters.

The top WD80EFAX drives are powered natively with a standard SATA power cable, as red labeled drives don't have any 3.3V issues. The bottom two drives are powered with a molex to dual sata power splitter.

The assembly is complete, the only thing left is to transfer ~13TB of old data to the new drive pool.

Nice work and that's a beast NAS system  I had  LSI 9260-8i and 4i cards i was using in my desktops, eventually become unusable due to bios space issue for firmware upgrades.  LSI cards were fast, reliable and stable.  Currently using them in a Dell T30 servers for multiple UNIX os.   Synology DS1511+ covers my NAS requirement of 15+TB.

What RAID level did you use, I assume it's a form of Raid 6? The parity loss makes since and RAID 5 and 50 are obsolete due to URE In that data pool size. RAID-Z is kinda generic since there are 5 versions of it

and what are you doing with all those 3TB drives? Asking for a friend

    I've been using RAID-Z1 (Raid5-like functionality) with 3TB drives.

With 8TB drives I initially wanted to do the same, but then thought Raid-Z2 would be better, but in the end I went with what FreeNAS defaulted to when creating a new pool which ended up with a stripe of two 4 drive Raid-Z1 VDEVs. (Raid 50-like functionality).

Probably going to build an offline backup server. Haven't really decided yet.

I know its RAID Z and all, but if that is your only copy for your backup i wouldnt trust or use any RAID 5 or 50 variants as they have a massively high chance of a failed Rebuild error (URE) that guarantees they will not be able to rebuild the Array

Need more throttle Captain😬. Nice build👍

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

I just built a custom NAS but my HDD space is a mess. I can't believe how high prices are on WD Reds these days.
