Older CPU on all but the EVGA X299 MICRO ATX 2, 121-SX-E296-KR, LGA 2066, Intel X299, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.1 Gen2, USB 3.1 Gen1, mATX, Intel Motherboard
  • SPI flashing via USB allows you to flash your BIOS without a CPU
  • Supports Intel Core X-series Skylake-X Processors

The New Z390 FTW is this way as well, SPI flashing via USB allows you to flash your BIOS without a CPU

If needed, we can certainly assist you with a replacement BIOS chip containing the latest version.

I should mention that no such BIOS exists at the moment and it is yet to be seen if these particular chips will be officially supported on the current X299 motherboards.

I was stupid, I had Rampage VI Apex option for 200-250 euro new never unboxed.
But i7-7820X was not so interesting and price for i9-7900X is to high.

This new generation... is soldered or thermal paste?

Me too. I've currently got a 6 core in a Dark. (LOL... it was a bargain). I had not got round to deluding it, so I am seriously thinking about upgrading to the 8 core / 44. I agree if with all the lucky ones with Skylake-X 10 cores and up that can't see anything too exciting about the refresh, but for people like me at the bottom of the totem pole the refresh is interesting.

Just got the board into Bios in the past hour, done some Bios configuration and now onto the O/S. Exciting. (And this PSU did not blow up on me! And I am not using the BL4 batteries anymore).

It would be really weird if they solder i9-9900K and left successor of Skylake-X with thermal paste.
Xtreme platform is for enthusiasts more than Z chipset. No matter on performance.

I'm actually looking into getting this Basin Falls refresh. My question is: with Intel stating that these all have up to 68 PCIE 3.0 lanes, can the EVGA X299 FTW K that I have use both X16 slots at X16 when any of the non-DMI 3.0 PCIE slots are populated? Or are we still stuck at X8 shared? (SLI along with a RAID card and a 900P have me asking this question)

Wow,, through all of the drama and what not with PT getting called out on their testing I totally missed these being a higher lane count. If the X299 Dark gets an bios update and will unlock being able to fully use both M.2 slots and both U.2 ports at the same time and can still achieve an everyday clock of 4.8ghs or greater on the 14 core chip then I (as I sneak a peak at my system while typing this) will be kicking my 7940x to the curb

I am,, just.....

While everything else in that cart above is "CPU" related they hid behind "Platform" for the PCIe 3.0 Lanes - Up To 68. When in reality real world ACTUAL CPU lanes is still sitting at 44. They just made all the CPUs from the 8 core to 16 core 44 lane units

I believe a lot of owners of previous Skylake-X will want to upgrade.
Newer was such big difference between processors on same socket.
28 PCI-E lanes vs 68 PCI-E lanes.
I must check specifications of every model.

If you read it they are saying the "Platform" can do 68 lanes but all I have seen is they are still only at 44 lanes on the actual CPU (see my post above)

Correct: CPU 44 lanes. It is a very misleading chart. Or at least the 68 lane claim is misleading. Technically true, but misleading.

It is - however - genuinely good news for people at the beginning of the X299 food chain, 6 core and 8 core.

I don't get people still coming out with "if it has solder" comments. It is weeks after the launch, all the press reports say it uses solder for X-series and the forums - including this forum post - are full of people saying it uses solder. What is not clear?

Re: BIOS update for the new i7-9800X and i9-9980XE 2018/10/18 07:46:42 (permalink)
I will also add if you weren’t already aware (like I wasn’t before I joined this forum)....

Only the CPU pcie lanes may be used for graphics cards. The chipset pcie lanes can not be used for graphics, usually they are for stuff like m.2, u.2 ect.

What this effectively means is that any SLI will bottleneck on the brand new just released “best processor for gaming” 9900K (Intel marketing lol).

The 9900K has 16 CPU pcie lanes.

https://en.wikichip.org/w.i/intel/core_i9/i9-9900k

In SLI, pcie bandwidth goes from x16 to x8 on both pcie slots. This was demonstrated by Steve from GamerNexus. He concluded a 16% performance loss by going from x16 to x8.

https://www.gamersnexus.n...ie-bandwidth-x16-vs-x8

So if you want x16 and x16 with 2 cards, you need a processor with more than 16 pcie lanes. Enter the socket 2066 chips. These are known as Skylake X or Basin Falls for the 7800X - 7980XE iterations released in late 2017. The Brand new processors just announced are the Skylake X refresh or Basin Falls refresh. They are supposed to be released in November.

Finally, and more on topic...

In the TEAMEVGA twitch broadcast that happens every Friday from 3pm to 4pm Pacific Time....

I asked Jacob in chat if the new Skylake X refresh chips would be supported on the X299 Dark motherboard and he confirmed it.
