My 980 Ti FTW gets as hot as 92 degrees C, would this be grounds for an RMA?

About 8 months ago I replaced my 980 Ti's thermal paste with Noctua NT H1 thermal paste to help reduce temps as this card always would get fairly warm 80C+ under normal gaming loads. The paste helped for awhile but in recent weeks, temps have been increasing and increasing with maxes now breaching 92C. I don't believe I applied the paste incorrectly as it has held up fine for many months, but am wondering if there is something else I should try or if this would be eligible for an RMA replacement? All my other system temps are fine and comfortable under gaming loads, it is just my video card that gets exceptionally warm I would say. I also run a custom fan curve that is more aggressive than stock, so the temps make me a bit uncomfortable. Thanks!

I would try to reapply the paste once more.

I would be talking to support about an RMA. I  fear the warranty replacement window could just be shrinking for you while you try to put a fix in place that isn't working long term.

Max Temp is 92C, I would think that the FTW would be 94C

This is my other concern as well. My worry is that in a few months again, when my warranty has expired I will see the issue again. I think I will also open up a ticket with EVGA support to see what they advise for me.

Not a defect - not a RMA issue

What are your OC settings ?

TIM can dry-out & that would cause temps to increase

    https://www.evga.com/articles/00957/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-980-Ti-FTW/

Room temp & air flow through your case have a large impact to GPU temps

Those ACX cooler push Most of the heat into the case; you need to remove that heated air before it gets recycled back into the GPU cooler

Don’t try the pea size method.. don’t try the small lines.. put thermal paste on there.. make it enough to cover everything. Even a tiny bit of surface area not covered will cause overheating and failures, even if you get great temperature readings.

I personally always spread my thermal paste using the edge of an old credit card that I cut wider than the core of the gpu so that it will be as smooth as possible. I haven’t had a single issue since I started using that method.

When I replaced the thermal paste initially, I did spread it with a credit card. Today I had a bit of a scare as my system black screened while idle and upon subsequent reboots, continued to have a black screen with no display. I was able to get it to come back after shutting the system down completely, trying a different monitor over a different cable interface (HDMI instead of displayport) which did show a screen finally. It was at that point I swapped back to my main monitor with displayport and it seems okay for now. I'm not sure what caused this.

I got my hands on some MX-4. When I find some spare time this week I'll apply it and report back with the new temps. Appreciate the help thus far.

After you applied the thermal paste (dont be greedy on it, better too much than not enough), put the cooler back on, tighten all the screws... Then take the cooler off again and check the mark of thermal paste on the cooler radiator left by the GPU die. The form of this mark should match exactly the one of the GPU die.

If it does not it could suggest a gap between the cooler radiator and the GPU die. This can happen if the thermal pads are put incorrectly or if the cooler is mounted incorrectly. Since the cooler has been designed specifically for your card the chance that the cooler does not fit the card properly is very low.

If there is indeed a gap of this kind and you have no other solution, you can try to use a huge amount of thermal paste on the core to see if it makes any difference. MX4 is non conductive so even if it spills you can clean it up afterwards. If it changes anything while everything else is in order then the cooler is probably defective, thought it's very unlikely.

I also suggest that when you stress test your card running 3DMark for example, leave your computer case open and manually set the GPU fan to 100% (just for testing). See if it changes anything.

The MX-4 definitely had a good impact. After hours of gaming, my max GPU temp is 77C . I made sure to use a little extra this time to get a thicker layer and carefully spread it with an old credit card. Hopefully it will hold up well. Thanks everyone!
