Hey everyone, I had a few questions about a new build I'm doing to replace my old set up (since it's almost 10 years old lol) and was hoping someone could kick down some general knowledge since it's literally been than long since I've built a computer. If you can believe it I'm replacing a 780i FTW board with a lapped Q9550 that's been running at 3.4 GHz for almost 9 of those 10 years lol. It's finally just gotten to slow and starting to show it's age so I'm going with a new set up. I bought a Z270 Classified with an I7 7700k processor and I was wondering what you guys recommend as far as doing the OS install and if I'll need to do any bios updates. Should I do a clean OEM builder version from disk or is there a better way to load it up? Also this is my first time using a SSD as my boot drive and main hard drive, are there any things I need to look out for when setting that up? Lastly, is there a way to hook up my platter drive from my old set up that has a ton of info, pics, music, ect. to the new board? Not sure if the newer SATA ports are backwards compatible or not. Thanks in advance for any help. All is appreciated :)

    Hello stable6150!

You can go with any build of the Operating system that you are attempting to install. However, if you do go with Windows 10, my personal recommendation would be to download the installation files onto a USB thumb drive by using the Windows Media Creation tool. That installs the most up to date stable build of Windows, you can then activate your copy at any time by buying a key online.

As for transferring your old data, the WD Caviar Black would still be detectable with this system and you should be able to pull the data. SATA ports and types are cross compatible, which mean SATA 1,2 and 3.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Jose, I actually already have a copy of windows 10 pro 64 on disk that a friend gave to me for this build, but if you think the other way would be better I'll check it out. Would it be that much of a problem if I went from disk? I would have to do updates for the newer versions after the install no? Which honestly wouldn't bother me all that much. I could just leave it running while I'm at work lol. Glad to know the hard drive is good to go, thank you. I was wondering though, the old drive has the version of windows 10 I have now (which was the free upgrade they did a while back online for some windows 7 users) is that going to interfere with the new set up and new OS when I go to transfer the data?

I would generally avoid going the disc route due to the fact that an older build of Windows is on that disc and then you would be writing over it with tons of updates, which in turns opens up the possibilities of bugs with your OS install.

You can have both drives installed at once, however you can choose to boot to the drive that you would like if the Masterboot Record is in tact. If not, then you will only boot into the new Windows 10 installation but will still be able to pull your files, then you can format the drive and use it for additional storage or game drive! ( I would use it as a game drive as the drive is older and the chances of that drive failing does increase overtime)

if your windows key is tied to your account it might transfer over to the new build once you sign into your MS account and activate it. personally i would have just the SSD connected while you install the latest build of windows, less chance of it trying to span the drives that way. once up and running on the SSD connect the HDD and copy any data off it and then format it for mass storage provided it doesnt give you any errors about age.

My main focus is building a nice hackintosh that is not going to break my bank, ,like i said i already have some of the components already so the only thing I would need to purchase is CPU and Motherboard. I would prefer a i7 build since im going to be doing some video editing on it, Not to heavy but some and for the most part Hackintosh will just only be good for web surfing and minor usage. Personally i feel that the video edit will be the most intense usage it will have. So I wanted to know do I need a Graphics card for that or can I just run it directly from the Motherboard one and also will my ram work is ddr3 so It will be nice for a good ddr3 motherboard that way I wont have to spend on new ram.

The thunderbolt port is one reason I keep my Z270 around and if no new Mac mini's on Oct 30 I will be right behind you on building.
My EVGA Z370 is working VERY well for Windows 10 stuff.

It's Probably fine man. FTW K is fine still, but cpu is running hotter on it though now.
The SuperMicro is being awesome too and runs cooler on it man. Strix Killer, Give NerdPhilla some hell lol
