Hi all, long time no speak :)

I'll jump right in...

I've just had the opportunity to upgrade my system (see sig) from 12gb to 24gb as a stop-gap whilst saving for my next build (X299). There is no OC as far as I remember.

Timings are the same on the new sticks (9-9-9-24 at 1600Mhz and 1.65 volts). But I've gone from 12gb (6x2gb) to 24gb (6x4gb).

Ram installed no problem and ran no problem. Then an hour in the "whea uncorrectable error" screen hit. Restarted then another hour or so and off it went again.

It's the only thing that's changed so it must be something to do with the ram.

I believe the board has the latest firmware (83 something) and I've ran windows memory diagnosis test and nothing. I even bumped up the voltage to 1.66 (probably pointless) but thought I'd best leave it until I asked here first.

Any help would be appreciated otherwise it's back to 12gb. No great harm but 24gb is useful for large images and ram previews.

T'was once a beast :)

I bet you need to increase the voltage of the imc since 24gb is putting more stress on it.

Thanks. That makes sense but before I go fiddling:

It happens only when watching YouTube via Chrome and it seems it could be driver related?

The dump files are showing ntoskrnl.exe, hal.dll and PSHED.dll errors.

I live on YouTube so this has to be fixed! Ha!

It's still more than likely IMC related. Populating it with more RAM is always a huge issue on those older chips. :)

The WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR means there is a hardware problem. Drivers aren't the issue here.

Cool. Well I'm not up-to-speed these days so I'll go with you guys :D

So if I'm running at 1.66v what's a safe bet to up? Do it in 0.05v jumps?

You need to increase the imc (integrated memory controller) voltage instead of the ram voltage. 0.05 at a time is perfect.

Ok, but that's very broad talk to me. So should I ramp it up or creep up until I have no issues?

Can't remember seeing imc but I'll hunt it down...

QPI/Uncore (VTT) is what you are looking for. Max safe voltage would be 1.35v.

Really appreciate your assistance on this :)
    I've got:
    CPU VTT voltage (auto) +0mv
    QPI PLL vcore (auto) 1.100v

    QPI PLL?

Searching QPI/Uncore (VTT) on my board is bringing me back to EVGA with lots of confusion. I just don't have a QPI VTT.

I'll up the CPU VTT and see from there. Don't want to get into OCing everything.

Yep, cpu vtt voltage is what you need to adjust.

I'll just keep going up and see. Currently at +50mv

From what I can find 0x0124 error in the dump file is low QPI Voltage (which I now know is CPU VTT) like you guys instantly pointed out.

I'm reading it's 1.17v default (doesn't say on screen) and that I shouldn't go above or below 0.5V of the dimm voltage otherwise I could damage the controller. So I'll take it slowly.

0x124 can also mean you need to adjust vcore. Max safe for that is 1.4v

    Hey again.

So I've been running fairly stable since the last post. But then today it's been freezing up and acting differently. Needing a restart.

Been playing around and bumped up the VCORE a tad to get it reasonably stable again. Also bumped down the dram voltage as 1.65 in bios was 1.71 in CPU-Z and CPUID. Only a tiny bit (1.63 showing 1.68) as too low was no good. It's pissing me off and i'm starting to think the system can't handle 24gb. Ran faultless for many years on 12gb.

However...I've just noticed my memory is only running at 2 x 533 (dual channel). Am I being stupid or should it not be 3x hense triple channel etc?

I believe it's suppose to be running triple channel, but I just looked at the manual, and it doesn't specify what mode the board should be running in with all the dimm slots filled. The manual does state that triple channel is supported when only slots 1, 3, & 5 are filled.

Yeh, same here. It's vague on the 6 slots. Ha!

Constant crashing/freezing: Reckon I should just go back to 12gb for now? No fixes or solutions seem available. Your tip fixed the blue screen. But this freezing stuff is a pain.

Interesting...so I need to work so I've gone back to the 12GB that ran no bother for years.

BIOS back to auto. HWM is showing CPU VTT 1.41V on auto with the 12GB!!!! I stayed under 1.35V for the 24GB as per all the info online. So...is that BS? because it seems my machine has been running 12GB at 1.41V for years! Ha!

I should have checked all this before changing out to 24GB.

I would try this:  Set your Dimm voltage manually to 1.67v and your CPU VTT to manual with +150mV.  Start there with VTT and see if things improve.  You may need to up the VTT more with all dimm slots populated.

Hmm. Let us know how it works with 24gb @ 1.4v.

6 dimms at 1.65 is too much for the IMC on these cpu's, get 1.5v dimms instead.

should also nab a cheap xeon from ebay, since the imc in this is  better at a full dimm rank.

Just an FYI... My X58 board has been running for 8 years now with all 6 Dimm slots full at 1.67v.  E770 Classy with an i7-950.
