Hopefully someone here can shed some light.

I've just upgraded my boot drive from a Samsung 850 EVO SSD (500GB) to a Samsung 970 NVMe (250GB) but windows task manager is showing my last BIOS time as being 15.5 seconds where as with the 850 EVO it was around 11 seconds?

This is after doing a clean install of Windows 10. I'm running the latest firmware for both drives as well as the latest BIOS for my Maximus X Hero.

ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X HERO

Did you change any settings for fast boot or name support in the bios? The extra few seconds could be the bios trying to decide what to load now that you moved to name.

Also, did you do a secure erase of the old ssd to remove any boot loader that may distract the initialization process for the name?

The only thing I changed in the BIOS was the setting "M.2_2 PCIe Bandwidth Configuration:[X2][X4]" from x2 to x4. I didn't secure erase the 850 EVO no I just quick formatted it in disk management.

Prior to posting here I did search google for an answer, while I was unable to find an answer I did read that even 10+ seconds is on the long side even for a standard SSD is this accurate?

P.S. By "Secure Erase" do you mean the option in Samsung Magician?

Secure erase is in the bios, under the advanced options if I am not mistaken. If you formatted the old drive, that should have removed the boot loader from the drive though.

I'm using the Samsung driver and just to reiterate I've updated both SSDs to the latest firmware with Samsung Magician.

Was looking around ..found a place where it talks about setting the Gen of the NVMe drive somewhere...changing it from Auto to Gen 3...and making sure the memory is set to the correct speed...

Personally not sure why it would be slower other than some bios settings.

I don't know if these images of my BIOS settings help shed any light or if there are any other relevant settings in the BIOS?

*Disregard the SanDisk in the second image I only plugged it in to save the screenshots.

What do you mean by memory to the correct speed? I'm currently just using the xmp profile.

Well changing the PCIe speed from [Auto] to [Gen3] made no difference.

The “Last BIOS time” figure is the amount of time it took for your computer's BIOS (or, more accurately, your computer's UEFI firmware) to initialize your hardware before it begins booting Windows when you start your computer.

Looks like the mgx controller on the 850 evo works better with your motherboards bios than the 970 evo's phoenix controller.

While that doesn't resolve the issue atleast I have a possible cause so thanks, hopefully a future BIOS update will improve it.

Just a final thought would disabling the CSM improve things?
