Hi Guys,

I bought the card back in december due to a recent build where I have been working for 2 months, specially for the water cooling. The only section or piece of hardware outside the waterloop for the moment us the card, but I have consider a possible upgrade from the standard ACX Cooler 2.0 to the EVGA 980 waterblock once there is stock in the EVGA online store.

To start let me post my current configuration:
MOBO: ASRock Z97 OC Formula
CPU: Intel i7 4790k @4.00Ghz {Not overclocked yet}
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB @2400Mhz
OS: Win 8.1 Pro x64
1. Storage Unit: Samsung EVO 840 SSD 250GB
2. Storage Unit: Dual HDD 500GB in RAID 1
3. Storage Unit: HDD 320GB

The card was installed in the 2nd PCI Express slot for aesthetics and to make it management and maintenance much easier. I installed the updated drivers from the website and also the latest EVGA Precision X to monitor and control the fan behaviour and so far I haven't got any stop error while gaming, but the results in FPS and lag is complete different story that appears to happens in almost every game that has been tested in the machine.

Results in certain games:
- (Origin) Crysis 3 - It varies, but it was running around 25 - 30 - 70 - 110 sometimes, so I guess is fine
- (Steam) Wolfestein: The Order - Unplayable, I had to tweak the game and modify the Nvidia Control Panel, Default.cfg file and Launch option parameter to play it. After that it runs around 35-25fps
- (Steam) Sleeping Dogs: Not matter was you do in settings, it stays between 40 -35 - 22 FPS (Unacceptable if you looks at the game requirements)
- Guild Wars 2: I bought this game online two days ago and I have not been able to play it since, with all placed in low, high or Ultra it stays in 30 - 22 - 15 FPS, a nightmare......

The card never exceed the 60c so I doubt is a temperature issue. I started troubleshooting the drivers by removing the old ones using Revo Uninstaller to get rid of leftover file or .reg entries. After the clean up, I installed the latest 347.25 driver from the EVGA website and I selected a custom installation, where I removed only the Geforce Experience entry, the rest was installed. I tested the game and the problem persisted.

I have been looking at several forums, threads, etc and there are multiple persons around the world experiencing issues with the GTX 980, 970 and SC editions as my case. No one has ever come with a result at the end, the simply says is a possible driver issue poorly designed which ends up causing these issue.

I am not quite sure about that theory considering that this isn't happening to every GTX 980 owner, so at this point I don't know what to think. I found a related post in this forum, where I'm posting for first time, so I will try the following over the week:

- Monitor the card performance with Latencymon
- Upgrade the MOBO Bios version
- Test my card onto a friends computer
- Test the card of my friend onto mine

Will see how that goes, but any help or guidance on this will be appreciated

Thanks in advance,
AR

What resolution are you playing at in all your games? Check and make sure your CPU isn't overheating while gaming.

Wow that is beyond odd! With temps not exceeding 60c, it sure sounds like another component in your system is having issues. I don't want to say power supply as that's always the first thing to get brought up(and usually not the issue). I think Sajin may be onto something regarding CPU overheating/throttling. With temps on your GPU not exceeding 60C, it's just not being pushed to it's full potential. One thing I want to make sure as-well, and it's not quite as important as it was 10 years ago, however I assume you installed your motherboards chipset drivers?

Maybe a guy is playing in 4K :)) But seriously, run GPU-Z and check graphs if your GPU and power consumption are hight enough - during the game....

Hi!
I would suggest putting your gfx card in PCIE slot 1 and test (allthough your motherboards pcie slot 2 is x16). Also make sure on your motherboard that "Slow Mode" and all such features are not enabled. Hope you sort it out M8 :)

If you have the possibility to test the Graphics card on another PC (maybe a friend?) that runs the same GPU you can pretty quickly find out if it's the card that's faulty or drivers installed on your own PC. If it works on your friends PC, then reinstall everything on your own PC.

If you can't test the card anywhere else, then do a complete wipe on your PC and reinstall everything. Chipset drivers first.

I'm no expert, but as a last resort, that should definately do the trick, as long as you don't have a faulty card!

Re: GTX 980 SC ACX2.0 - Lag and Low FPS in almost every game 2015/01/30 09:12:16 (permalink)
Hi guys,
I spent almost 4 hours yesterday troubleshooting with a friend of mine as stated yesterday in the original post and I got interesting results while doing it. I started running a benchmark with UniGiNE Heaven Benchmark 3.0 in my computer without making any changes, look at the attachments:
-          My Rig Test 1

-          My Rig Test 2

Then I tested my friend card (GTX 660) and during the benchmark it presented lag as well, for this look at the attachment “My Rig with GTX 660 (Friend Card). From there we can see that there is definitively something wrong and not exactly with any of the video cards that were tested.

To prove and confirm this theory, I installed my GTX 980SC in my friend PC, and I got tremendous results, as expected from the GTX model. See attachment “Gtx 980 in friend Rig”.

After these results I performed the following changes:
- Bios upgrade to its latest version
- Chipset upgrade to its latest version
- Checked the 12volts rail in the PSU and it looks fine, no constant fluctations, almost steady at 12.33..
- Removed the Ram and installed only one, which belongs to my friend [Same issue, exlcuding RAM]
- I tested the machine and got the same result with lag while running the benchs

From here, I can only think of possible issues in the MOBO since the CPU's are rarely damaged. I contacted another friend with spare parts to test another MOBO with socket 1150 to ran some benchmarks there with the same Graphic Card and CPU in my RIG.

Once I get home, I will put the card onto the PCIE1 slot and test, I don't think it will make a hugh difference, but look at this thread:

I'm aware it isn't the same issue, but this looks interesting:
-- 3 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 Slots (PCIE1/PCIE2/PCIE4:
-- single at x16 (PCIE1);
-- dual at x8 (PCIE1) / x8 (PCIE2);
-- triple at x8 (PCIE1) / x4 (PCIE2) / x4 (PCIE4))

Until I know, you should be able to use your card at any of the PCIE ports, but I guess I don't lose anything by putting thisn onto the PCIE1 slot. Btw I only play at the resolution showed in the benchamrk, at least for now (1920x1080) 23" LED LG 3D.

What do you guys think?????

Thanks in advance,

Time to run the 3dmark firestrike benchmark so we can see if your CPU is working correctly or not. Make sure to post your web results after running the benchmark.

Sounds like a good plan.

I will run the benchmark, take notes of the results and then I will change the card from PCIE2 onto PCIE1, followed by a 2nd benchmark test once the card is in there.

I will be posting the results once I get home.

Hi,
I did not set the bus speeds manually in the board, the entire PCIE slots are set to Automatic in the BIOS. I don´t now if that makes a difference, but it should be working in theory as the default settings. The only thing that was modified until now in the Bios was the fan speeds and the XMP profiles to achieve the 2400Mhz in RAM.

These are the results:
1st Test in PCIE2 without changes:

The second test surprised me, I did not get the same score, but the physics remains under 7Fps.

I will try to arrange some time over the weekend to swap the CPU and Mobo with a friend that has a socket 1150 and post the results. At this point is the only think I could think of......

Any additonal suggestion will be appreciated.

Looks like your CPU is throttling big time. Did you check it's temperature?

hmmm try this?

Taken from nVidia forums
Disable the High Precision Event Timer HPET (usually found under Advance options-->ACPI). This causes a lot of the latency/stuttering issues.

Disable C State (results in low FPS on some boards)

For Intel users disable Speedstep. It's similar to C State but it's not as terrible as C state... disable it anyway.

Turn these on one by one if you're concerned about idle power usage and run benchmarks to see if they affect performance... well all except HPET.

if you have windows make sure the power saving mode is normal or high performance.

Your cpu seems to be running at idle clock speeds. You need to verify that slow mode isn't enabled. It is a switch on the motherboard itself.

CPUz is a good way to check it. If you have Aida64, open cpuz and start the cpu stress test. This will put your cpu under load. Submit a validation of your cpu through cpu or take a screen shot of the main screen.

There is no reason you should be running that slow unless your cpu is stuck at 1200mhz

Here is where the slow mode switch is located on the board. It should be set to the off position.

I believe is set to the ON position, so I will check that in a few minutes. For now I will share the result that I got yesterday running a CPU benchmark with IntelXTU. From what I could see the CPU is throttling as you mentioned before and it´s doing it at 100% for some reason where I exclude temperature issues.

I´m using a Swiftech Apogee XL water block for that CPU and during the benchmark it did not went higher than 43c, its idle temperature tends to be around 30c. Apart from that observation if you look at the results, of INTELXTU and CoreTemp, something appears to be restricting the CPU clock from 4000Mhz to 800Mhz. I tried removing the AUTO settings and replacing those number from 4000Mhz to 4.4 at 2.0v, but it does the same thing at the seconds benchmark.

I will turn the SlowMode Switch OFF and I will re-run the bench. For the moment here are my results:

I got the same result with the stock heatsink that came in the i7 box, but at 41c. I also found this thread with a similar case, for this guy it was the MOBO.
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2232697/4790k-locked-800mhz.html

I will post the other results in few minutes.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks a lot to everyone, the SlowMode Switch does the trick. I remember that I moved that switch accidentally when testing the HDD saver feature of this board in December, it´s always good to have more than one person to think outside the box, and consider minor facts that might alter the entire equation when troubleshooting certain issues.

I only tested two games and this is what I get:
- Guild Wars is around 63FPS (From 12FPS before)
- Sleeping Dogs is around 55FPS (From 35FPS before)

I couldn´t detect any lag or low FPS while gaming or when running the Heaven & 3DMark Firestrike Benck, everything worked perfectly and thease are the results:

3D Mark Firestrike Benchmark Results - Attached Below - Details here: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5738559

Intel XTU Benchmark results - Attached below

Thanks again for the info and valuable support.

Fantastic. The screen shot you posted shows that your 4.4ghz (boost clock) 4790k was running at 800mhz.. I would call that the fabled bottleneck, lol. Glad it was just the switch.

Heya mate i saw that you have a samsung evo ssd in your computer. Have you seen if there is a new firmware for that ssd since on many of the 840 versions there is a bug that lowers the read/write to 1mb/s, maybe your problem lies there.

Woops sorry saw that you already fixed your problem.

Hopefully with the WC you will reach my score. The only difference in our configurations resides in the following:
- CPU waterblock (Distilled Water)
- 2x8GB @2400Mhz
- Fan Profile custom configuration via EVGA Precision for better temperature management in the card

For the moment I will leave the CPU without OC, I don't think it will make a considerable performance boost while gaming. The rest is basically under the same config.

I will turn the SaveMode Switch OFF and I will re-run the bench. For the moment here are my results:

I got the same result with the stock heatsink that came in the i7 box, but at 41c. I also found this thread with a similar case, for this guy it was the MOBO.

I will post the other results in few minutes.

Thanks in advance,
