I just had my card stop responding and my screen go black. After rebooting I found in the device manager that my 980 ti was not responding with windows giving me an error code 43. After installing new drivers in GeForce and a reboot the card is now responding again.

Does anybody know what could be the source of this problem? And also should I be worried the card is going to fail? I'm going to a game art school starting October and I CANNOT have my card fail right now because it makes all my 3d modeling and graphical software impossible to use without a card.

It could be caused by either the Graphics Driver, or the card is going bad, or a few other things.

Listing all your system hardware and OS might help.

But for starters I would grab Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and the latest NVIDIA Graphics Driver..Then start Windows in Safe Mode..Then run DDU to remove the NVIDIA Graphics Driver and all the optional driver components and leftovers..Then after restarting your PC, install the NVIDIA Graphics Driver using the Custom (Advanced) install option and choose to install only the NVIDIA Graphics Driver and PhysX System Software.

If you have Lucid VIRTU MVP software installed, uninstall that before installing the Graphics Driver.

See also: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems(Code 43) for my graphics card (It's a little dated but still holds true).

If no joy, try an older Graphics Driver..If still no joy, you might test the card in another PC (or try another card in your PC), it may be (probably) bad..If it's bad, it may be able to be fixed (short term/long term/not at all) by baking the card which can be discussed later, or you can search 'Bake Graphics Card' on YouTube.

    My hardware:

    Asus Z170M-Plus motherboard
intel i7 6700K (with cooler master nepton 240)
16GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX series low profile RAM DDR4 2666mhz CL16
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+
    Samsung 850 EVO 500gb
    Microsoft Windows 10 home

I've managed to get the card working just by updating the graphics drivers. I'm more worried about if in the future it might suddenly die

With any luck it's just caused by the Graphics Driver (hope so)..Time will tell.

With mine I had to Enable CSM and Set the Video to Legacy Mode in the Bios to stop Code 43

Maybe your issue was caused by windows trying to force you to another driver version.

Update to this, one of the cards fans are now rattling as well. This is absolutely ridiculous I had to RMA this card in July and got sent this one and I'm already having issues? I feel like I've gotten the bad batch just until my warranty runs out and so I'll have to purchase a new card. I've had nothing but trouble with this and I really doubt buying an Evga card in the future.. It's annoying because I like the design of the cards and all but this is just too much.

    Well, that's major suckage.

The fans seem to be Power Logic PLA09215B12H according to this review..I see Newegg has the replacement fans for $17.00 as of now (says for a GTX 760 but the same fan number as a GTX 980 Ti SC)..Easy to change the fans..Food for thought.

You might also try reseating the fan's ball bearings by removing the card, put it fan-side up and pressing the fans down while twisting them a little..Sometimes they get out of alignment and make noise.

    What He Said ^
Take the card out of the Computer and place on a Flat Static Free Surface and then try to reseat the fans.
Try Pushing the Fans Down with one Finger in the Center of the Fan and release, do this 6 or 7 times to each fan.

fan issue and code 43 ?   now that would be hard to put it on the fans   .  remember kinda like to what sajin said above   win-10 and code 43 was a common issue  , but you now don't see it as you use to   may look at some on  that  .

ya , suer seems lately a lot of 00 series are a 3 and out  if you can even make the 3 years '     . also look over yopur PSU or any power issues to the card    one guy found it was his pci-e 6/8 pin  not good or something as that for a example .

look at the rash of ''burnt'' cards just here  maybe a component not as severe  to really burn up could cause that hardware issues and a 43 ?/ bad card

bad part is trying to weed out whats the true cause  heck man could be the motherboard  when a card is in place ?

Code 43 seems to have been fixed with a driver change/update?

Just order and throw a fan kit on it for 17 bucks if one is bad and you have no more issues with the card..Cheap and not hard to do.

LOL, sure, throw more money at a bad card you have already had to rma.
If its still in warranty, contact evga and make them fix it, and free shipping both ways.
Users should not have to put up with stuff like this.
    :(

But, if its out of warranty, yeah fix the fan and when the card goes out in another month buy something else.
