X299 Dark VRM Fans issue

Help! :D
 
So the VRM fans are acting up on my X299 Dark. Typically on cold boot, they'll start and stay at an elevated speed. Doesn't sound like max but not 100% certain. Based on the profile that's set (PWR fans, right?) shouldn't be running at all on a cold boot. I have played with the settings but still get varied results.
 
Most of the time after the system comes up to temperature I'll do a power cycle and they start behaving again. Anyone experienced anything similar? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance! Pretty annoying hearing those little suckers whine when the rest of my system is custom loop and dead silent. Cheers.

    Hello pure_lunatic! Sorry to hear about the VRM fan issues. Do the fans spin up to 100% only during POST and then go down to normal or do they get stuck at 100% even after you boot into your OS?

    What are your Bios Settings for the Fan?
    I have mine set to Smart.

    They stay at 100% even after OS has loaded, etc.

    Same. I have kept the setting on "smart" and have also played the curve/setpoints a few times to see if there was any effect when the system behaves as described. No effect.

    Change to a different Bios number like #3 and then as you Power On Press and Hold the Small RED Button on the Motherboard to Reset the Bios for a count of 10 and see if that resets the fans.

    The VRM fans on my system run all the time (default smart setting). I too have a full loop system and I cannot hear the VRM fans, even with the whole thing currently still sitting on an open bench right next too me. If anything the fan in the power supply makes the most noise and even at that it is still pretty quiet. I had a friend over lat weekend and we were talking about him building a new system. I showed him this one and he was amazed at how quiet everything was

    What bios are you using?


    So I originally noticed the behavior as described, running on bios chip #1 with the default bios version (1.0?). I updated to 1.08 and the latest bios version didn’t affect the VRM fan issue.

    Based on the recommendation here I switched to chip #2 and on initial boot (cold) no issue thus far. Also updated to 1.08 on chip #2 and again, no problems so far. Thanks for the suggestion and will continue to monitor!

    Other than this quirk I’ve been impressed and really enjoying this board!

    What is the Fan Speed After your OS is Booted up and you are on the Desktop?
    Also you might want to create your own Thread as to not take away from the OP Threads.

    Spoke too soon. First cold boot today and the VRM fans are at it again. Heard it immediately on power up and got into bios right away. Speed signal is coming up as N/A so I’m guessing they’re defaulting to high speed.

    Considering this problem is intermittent and I’ve checked the connections, any more ideas?

    Edit: tried a quick OS shutdown, wait 30s and power back up — fans still maxed

    following that, OS shutdown to PSU switch cycle and 30 sec dwell time — fans reporting and working correctly.

    Check the VRM fan harness. Mine was really tight on end of the heat sink on the 24 pin power connector side. Initially the harness was pinching between the VRM heat sink and the memory module. I ended up making a slight routing change

    Just for fyi purposes my Dark vrm fans are set to 0 rpm under 40'c , 40% @ 40'c, 65% @ 50'c, max rpm @ 65'c and above.
    Fans ramp up and down with no problem.
     
    My current bios 1.08 however I had no probs with the original bios either.
     
    Suggestion: To rule out a defective vrm fan (possible out of spec resistance or intermittent internal shorts) use a fan harness extension and try a different fan header. Still have problems fan is no good. Problem goes away problem is on board side.
     
    I don't know how the Corsair Link works but could that be clashing with bios?

    Thanks for the responses. Here’s the latest:

    Had to make a 32” fan extension but, currently running the VRM fans off of my Aquaero 6XT. No issues for the past two days. They start, run and report tach to Aquaero without issue. I’ve done a thorough visual inspection on the fan wiring and connector. Nothing obvious.

    When I have some more time I’ll experiment with the VRM fan header and a few different fans to check for the same failure on system startup.

    At this point I would be likely to settle for a workaround of some sort, regardless if it appears to be a board defect. Will report back with any additional information that becomes available.

    Would be nice to hear EVGA chime in based on my updates, but thanks for the support from the community.


    Edit: one more thing. Does anyone know which temperature this board is using to control VRM fan speed? (CPU, die, SYS, something else?) thanks.

    Try plugging the fan to another fan header on the board preferably one with smart function so you can see or hear the fan actually ramp up and down.

    Figured there would be, thanks. My plan was to mimic smart control via Aquaero software but if I can’t access VRM temp signal, this won’t be possible. Based on the testing performed by Gamers Nexus on this board’s VRM heatsink performance, I feel pretty good about just running them at a constant low speed (4K rpm).

    Not sure what kind of answer you’re looking for here. My last few posts have the latest information. Have not yet tested VRM fan header with substitute fans.
