When I look at a project, my first question is, "How will my expenditure of electricity and computer resources on this project be useful to humanity or advance science in a way that a practical, useful outcome is likely?"  The easiest ones for me to put my finger on and know with relative surety that my efforts aren't for badges is the medical field.  My electricity and computer resources helping researchers understand how disease works, or proteins fold, or how a new or old drug will react with a virus is easy for me to grasp and I can see how I am making a positive impact.  Some of the projects I read about just leave me with the question "What's the point?"

What do you look for when reading project summaries?  What do you consider when deciding where to put your efforts?

    What is your End Goal?

What Types of Projects do you like to run?
    Astrophysics
    Biology
    Chemistry
    Cognitive Science
    Computing
    Earth Sciences
    Mathematics
    Medicine
    Permanent Testing
    Physics
    Rendering
    Umbrella project (Like WCG)
    Projects List Under BAM!

    Then we have Team Events

    Like for me it is Badges then for Projects;
    Biology/Chemistry
    Umbrella project (Like WCG)
    Mathematics/Physics
    Team Events.
This also includes Folding as well.
When I Fold I Crunch on the CPU.
I do not look at the Cost for Electricity only because if I did I would not Crunch or Fold.
BOINC and Folding is Not Green Friendly as I am Not Green Friendly as well.

I'm doing WCG.  That's enough for my one FX-8350.  I was just wondering what other people consider when choosing projects.

I had a banner from there for a couple months but it seems to be broken.  One day it just quit working, so I deleted it from my signature here.

Sometimes the Site Goes Down, you only need to wait a day or two.
The Folding Banner does the same once in a while.

Nah, if they've changed something so that Firefox or Brave won't work, I'll do without.  Thanks though.

Got it figured out.  Apparently I broke it.  I'm guessing it went down, I reentered my information trying to fix it and fat fingered my CPID.

To answer the original post, i look for projects that i view as (potentially) beneficial for mankind. That usually falls under bio/medical projects for me too. I also have a couple other pet projects where i find the science interesting as well.

Team challenges also draw my interest, as it’s fun to work towards a common goal and a chance to rib each other at times, all in good fun of course. It’s also a chance to see/drool over hardware and points that blows my boxes out of the water.

Badges are fun to works towards too, but if I don’t “connect” with the science behind the project then i won’t stick with it for long.

I went through all the ones in that list and found a few outside WCG that sounded interesting.  RNA, drug testing, evolution.  I didn't connect with the obscure math problems.  I think the seti project is interesting, but can't really put it in the "good for humanity" classification. If an alien culture visits us, it won't exactly be Jean-Luc Picard, Kirk or Janeway.  It'll be some mobile mining operation that'll finish what we started and move on.  LOL

RNA, drug testing DrugDiscovery@Home are two of the Hardest Projects to get Tasks.
Evolution over on YoYo http://www.rechenkraft.net/yoyo/server_status.php can also be hard to get.

Bummer.... is that because they aren't doing much work or is it because they have more volunteers than they have work to pass around?

We all have our pet projects, I think you need to choose what is important to you.
Everyone here pays for their own electricity and owns their own rigs...

Keep it fun, is all I ask.... Because we all enjoy Crunching together...as a Team.

I break projects I run into three categories.

First one is health care, specifically projects that deal with Alzheimer's/Dementia, Cancer, and communicable disease. Next up is contests that require a team wide effort. For example the current Seti@home Wow event. Lastly is badge hunting to set a short term goal to work towards. Well, there is a fourth category, something that just pushes my cool factor button. Something like breaking the last few unbroken coded messages written with the Enigma code machine from World War 2.

All these categories tend to get treated equally except for team efforts. Those tend to get pushed to the front of the list.
