I can't use my GPU in the last days. The screen turned black while gaming and after that I couldn't do anything.
Restarting would result in a loop without seeing windows at all.

I troubleshooted this. I removed my GPU and used the built-in graphics from my CPU (i7-8700K). My PC works fine without the GPU, I enter Windows and everything seems ok.
I removed Nvdia's drivers (using DDU) and plugged in my GPU, connected my monitor to the GPU and I was able to get in Windows. So I downloaded the latest drivers from nvdia (the ones released on 26/6) and tried installing them. The screen turned black and the PC froze. I couldn't get in Windows again after restarting unless I removed the GPU.

  • PC works without GPU
  • PC works with GPU but no drivers.
  • PC doesn't work with GPU and drivers (tried older drivers as well).

I am on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit with all updates installed. i7-8700K, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 650W (old) PSU, EVGA 1080 Ti SC2 BLACK

Is my GPU dead? It's only a few months old. Any help would be highly appreciated

Have you tried doing ddu in safe mode to remove any nvidia drivers without the nvidia card installed? Then install the card again and see if you can get into windows.. if so make sure your installing the correct drivers.

If not prob safe to say dead. Though trying the card in another pc would rule out that it's not a bad pcie slot.. have you tried another slot?

That's exactly what I did. Removed the GPU so that I can boot and used DDU to remove nvdia drivers. Tried both the latest and some older drivers with no success. What confuses me is that the PC did boot with the GPU plugged but as soon as I install any drivers I get a black screen and it freezes.

Crazy.. tried another pci slot yet?

Have another spare hard drive laying around to use for a quick windows install on it (without messing up your current) and see if it's the old windows install?? Ya might of mentioned already installing a fresh copy.

Only other thing I can think of is trying a different psu.. but dont see how that could be it if ya cant get into the bios or just into windows as there wouldn't be a huge load on the psu durring that.

Leaning windows is messed up since it's when everything went bad when installing the new nvidia drivers.. you sure it was the right drivers?

    With GPU un-plugged:
    • I can get to bios
    • I can boot into windows
    With GPU plugged with drivers:
    • I can get to bios
    • I don't see windows at all. The screen blinks a bit while black and after 20 seconds it reboots

What I can do (that confuses me) is that with GPU unplugged I can use DDU to remove any drivers and then if I plug the GPU again it boots into windows successfully. As soon as I install nvdia drivers it's all the same again (black screen).

I haven't tried a different PCI slot yet (didn't even think of it), thanks for the suggestion. I am also going to borrow a PSU to see if I have any better luck.

It needs quite some effort to install the wrong drivers these days. I installed both through GForce experience and by downloading the specific drivers from Nvdia's website.
Also, the problem originally started while gaming, the drivers I was using were perfectly fine till that point.

If you have the ability to test the GPU in another PC that will give you info about the real cause.

Ah.. I wouldn't use geforce experiance.. the newest set of drivers gives you a choice before installing with or without experiance... go without unless you need it.. but I still wouldn't use that to install drivers.

Having issues with gaming before this major driver issue install happened. What exactly was happening? Lock up? Reboot? Powering off? All those could be a sign of the psu not putting out enough juice anymore.

Not having the issue till you install the drivers is telling me possibly windows is corrupt.

Hate to see you do an rma and get a used/refurbished card and have the same issue.

Try another pcie slot first.. find a hdd laying around and slap windows on it to test installing nvidia drivers 2nd.. 3rd. I'd say psu.

Hard drives are super cheap right now.

    Try this Nvidia tool  https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2832050

What kind of connection (cable) GPU to monitor ?

What Monitor are you using ?

Sounds like it was working at one time - correct ?

You tried the previously working Nvidia driver ? (what driver was that)

If your using Dp cable a certified one is important to use (they do not have to be expensive)

Do the fans on your gpu spin up to 100% when the screen goes black? If yes, it could definitely be a psu issue.

My problems with artifacting started when I updated to the latest drivers.
Not sure what to do now.Rolling back to older drivers doesnt fix the issue for me.

Windows 10 black screen problems fixed

June Patch Tuesday - released quality improvements and fixes for Windows 10 version 1803 or the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

    (excerpt)

The KB4284835 update moves Windows 10 version 1803 to OS Build 17134.112 and addresses an issue that caused systems to start up in a black screen: "This issue occurs because previous updates to the Spring Creators Update were incompatible with specific versions of PC tune-up utilities after installation."

This issue is separate to the black screen problems Avast users were struggling with last month after installing Windows 10 version 1803.

Among the other bug fixes, Microsoft has fixed an issue where firmware updates cause devices to go into BitLocker recovery mode when it's enabled, but Secure Boot is disabled or not present. This build now prevents firmware installation when a device is in this state.
