I think I'm missing something.
New build. Z170 Classified K, EVGA GTX1080 SC, and two M.2 Samsung 850 EVO's (1x 500GB and 1x 1TB).
The sockets are enabled in BIOS (running 1.04), however it only recognizes the M.2 SSD plugged into socket 1 (the one which lies under the first PCIE x16 slot... GPU). The system doesn't recognize the other M.2 SSD installed (socket 2). It's not a bad stick as if I swap them, it recognizes the other one.
Nothing else installed. Any suggestions?

So just to verify, you have Socket3(1) [upper] and Socket3(2) [lower] enabled in the BIOS? Do you have anything plugged into PCIe Slot 4, which is shared with Socket3(2)? Have you tried just installing in the lower slot, and not the upper?
I currently only have an M.2 drive in Socket3(2) on my board, but I have a second one I could try out tonight to see if I can replicate your situation. Both are Samsung 950's though.

Correct, both Socket3(1) and Socket3(2) are enabled in BIOS. I have nothing plugged into PCIe Slot 4.
I haven't tried just the lower slot. Will do that in a few moments.
This is an i7-6700K. No OC (yet).

No joy. Looks like an issue with the socket (unless I'm missing something else). Tried both SSD's in just the lower socket, BIOS didn't recognize either. However BIOS recognizes both drives if they're in the upper socket.

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience; I have forwarded this to our product team for review, and we will be posting back once we are able to confirm or deny if this will work. EDIT: I received confirmation that, unfortunately, only the 110mm slot supports SATA; they will both support PCIE, but only the top slot supports SATA. I apologize again for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Thank you for following up, I appreciate it. Not really too much of an inconvenience, glad it got sorted. Did I mis-read something somewhere where only the 110mm is SATA? Just curious if I could have avoided it. Again, thanks for the info. Quick fix on this end (was able to return one of the M.2's and just pick up a 2.5" SSD with no headache). Regards,

You're absolutely right! My oversight... Oh well, it was quickly remedied and the build is up and purring.. Thank you again for the quick response. One of the reasons I stick with EVGA for as many components as I can. Besides the quality, the assistance is phenominal (even if it's my own screw up). Thanks!

sorry to bump an old thread but im considering switching over from my Samsung 850 pro 2.5" ssd to a single 970 EVO m.2. Will then use old 2.5" ssd for basic storage, plugged into the sata header on the right. Is there any advantage to plugging in the m.2 to into the upper vs lower m.2 slot? With the top one supporting SATA, what is the advantage of that? I thought sata was just a drive protocol? If I use the upper slot do i disable sata 4&5? Can i just use the lower slot as it will be clear of the graphics card instead, less heat? z170 classified k, (1) 1080ti in upper pci16 slot, (1) soundblaster in PCIE1 slot

Based on my reading of the manual the M.2 slot shares 2x native SATA

This is correct; in general I recommend using the lower M.2 slot as this allows for the greatest number of hard drives and other SATA devices to be used. There should be no difference in speeds between the two.
