I currently have a 5930K that I just recently OC'd to 4.0. I was thinking about the 8086K or 8700K. Do you guys think there will be a big difference? I am running a 240Hz monitor with a 1080Ti, so I try to push as high of FPS as I can in game.

    Yes.

I see that the turbo is faster, but will it make that much of a difference in games? I really do not like overclocking my CPU's either, so it would be running at stock.

With the 8700k running at 4.7 ghz on all cores, or the 8086k running at 5 ghz on all cores you'll definitely notice an increase if you aren't already maxing out your 240hz panel.

Yeah, with the 4 ghz OC on the 5930k and my memory at 2666 Mhz, it does seem like it is getting a lot closer to the 240 FPS in the games that I play. I had my CPU at 4.4 at one point, but it wasn't stable. I really do not like OC'ing though... I have just been OC'ing this CPU because I figure it is at the end of its usefulness to me.

I went from a 5930k to a 8700k and i felt a sizable fps increase in RTS games which are CPU bound paired with my titan v. I did lose quad channel memory but i haven't noticed it in games.

    Asus Strix Z790 F - Intel 13700 K - Gigabyte 4090 Windforce - 32gb DDR 5 - 1TB Samsung SSD 850 evo - Windows 10 Pro - 1TB Samsung M.2 860 - Inland 2 TB NVMe - Acer Predator X27

Yeah, I didn't think that I would notice the ram difference. I currently have 16GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum 3000Mhz DDR4. I figure that is still a good set for an 8700K build. At this point, I think the just the motherboard and CPU is all I need. The difficult part is Windows installation. Will it let you reinstall with the same license after a motherboard and CPU change?

Yes, but you'll need to talk to Microsoft. To keep yourself from having to reinstall everything just sysprep the drive before moving it to the new motherboard.

All I have is Steam and the games are on other drives. Reinstalling everything is not that bad for me.

What I was looking at for comparison is this review, in games it shows the 5930k ahead of the 8700k: https://www.anandtech.com...400-initial-numbers/14

I have reused win10 keys several times. What I did was uninstall the key from the board. Here is how.
After you uninstall the key, install the OS on the new computer. But do not put the key in at the beginning when it asks.
Click I do not have a key, continue to install the OS.
After the OS is installed. then activate windows by putting in the key

    Uninstall Windows 10 Product Key

Press Windows key + X then click Command Prompt (Admin).
At the command prompt, enter the following command: slmgr.vbs /upk.

Another question for you guys. I am looking at this board: https://www.amazon.com/gp...TVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

What do you guys think. I always liked the Sabertooth boards, but the z370 doesn't have one. This looks like the closest to that level of quality. It has the protector around the pcie slots and a backplate. It also has all the features I want.

1 review hardly tells the story. The 8700k and the 8086k have higher ipc than the 5930k. Processors with higher ipc generally produce more fps at lower resolutions. Not a bad motherboard.

The i7-5930k is a hexcore 12 thread Haswel CPU, is it really that bad? Not like it is a Sandybridge or older.
Heck my i7-4930k ivybridge 4.2ghz with my GTX1080Ti plays everything I throw at it.  2K 144mhz  COD, FEAR , DOOM stuff like that.
Myself, I would not spend the money for a new CPU and motherboard.
    Is it really worth it?
I have an i5-8600K hexcore, no HT coffee lake. I was thinking of moving everything over and make it my game/everything system.
Now I just use it for crunching BOINC, really great at primegrid. Blows all my others and AMD Rizen out of the water in primegrid.

My ddr 4 corsair dominator 3000Mhz should be fine in this board, right? https://www.amazon.com/CO...D=RNWVFZTNCH8BACM8ZV28

Edit: Never mind, I found it on the qualified vendor list.

I pulled the trigger on this setup. I figured the only thing that I would be losing is the extra PCIe lanes, that I never use. I never go with SLI anymore. I also do not add a sound card, because I have an X7 from Creative.

I think if the two processors are at the same speed things might be more even, but I can overclock the 8700k higher, from what I read, if I want to. It sounds like it will be easier to run my ram at 3000 as well. Right now my RAM is at 2666 because I don't want to have to set the bclk to 125. There are just more pros to going with this new setup that extend beyond just speed.

Is it OK just to use the old installation of Windows 10? It fired right up. I was going to clean install, but forgot to hit the boot menu button and it went right into Windows... After installing the new motherboard and CPU.

It really is best to install a fresh OS on a new board and CPU. It is a different chips set and all.
There may be errors that are going on in the background that are not fatal errors . Registry errors that can cause issues.
I did see where people did a windows repair and things seemed to work right.
What are you going to do with the old board and CPU?

This unlocks the key from the old board, it worked for me even with an OEM key.

    Uninstall Windows 10 Product Key

Press Windows key + X then click Command Prompt (Admin).
At the command prompt, enter the following command: slmgr.vbs /upk.

Thank you for that. I did use your method to deactivate the key. I will probably clean install tomorrow. I might reactivate Windows before though, just to make sure it activates properly with this motherboard and CPU. It will save a step later.

I don't know why people say that these 8086K's never clock to 5Ghz, or that you would never really see it, it goes up that high for me a good amount. Yes, not while playing games, but why would you expect that anyway.

Everything is up and running great. Scores are up in benchmarks by a good amount, even from the scores when I had my 5930K OC to 4.4. Seems like a pretty solid upgrade so far.

The only thing that I can say negative, is the temps are higher than the 5930K. I see it topping out around 60C. On my 5930K it never went up that high, even overclocked.
