water cooling a CPU is far from novel, computer chess players have done this for decades

so what if they have a water cooler, i have one too

Was just reading an article from Digital Trends on the matter; "Because of that cooler and the server-grade CPU that this “new” design is said to be based on, it may have required as much as 2,300 watts of power just to turn the system on, making it laughably unfeasible for anything but that very specific show debut. Considering the reveal of this supposedly groundbreaking design appeared to be cobbled together and tacked on the end of Intel’s stage show, its timing just before AMD’s own Threadripper 2 reveal is incredibly suspect."

I think people are freaking out for nothing. Maybe intel was just showing off it's OCing extreme capabilities and that anyone with a good view of the rig, would have noticed a block on the CPU and a thick tubing in and around the rig.  I can see the hysteria caused by those that might have been confused by it or not familiar with chillers or custom cooling in general or just click bait drama for traffic.  Maybe intel wanted this reaction so everyone is talking about INTEL.  Who knows.

I still think AMD has the upper hand atm unless intel comes out with a higher SKU core count to counter AMD unless they had said that this was going to be their top end for enthusiasts.

Your work is done because you proved nothing.

Work is done. Job is over. It's quitting time. 4:30pm. I was actually saying my place of employ has released me from my chains for the day. Take it easy, hoppy.

And I proved plenty. The fact that you misconstrue or deliberately ignore intent and then attempt to legitimize your position with rolling emoticons. Brilliant.

There is still arguments in this thread. Keep on topic or we'll have to lock the thread.

With experience, Intel [and NVIDIA] have both been at the forefront of reliability. Working with AMD in the computer shop has really turned me off because of all of their frustrations. The fact that you even need a 'Boot Kit' with an unnamed Bristol Ridge CPU to flash a BIOS is silly. For these reasons alone, I'm 100% sold on Intel and never will buy AMD.

That's not the numbers I'm hearing. It's 1200watts for the chiller and you can figure 400watts for the system.

A 1200 watt chiller to cool a 400 watt system? Ha! How inefficient do you think the chiller is?! That CPU's power consumption at 5 GHz is estimated to be around 1000 watts. 1000 watts for CPU + 1200 watts for chiller + xxx watts for the rest of system = somewhere around 2300 watts total. Sure the chiller doesn't require power from the PSU, but you still need 2 PSUs to achieve around 1000 Watts on the 4 EPS 12v CPU connectors possessed by that motherboard; unless you ditch ATX standards and modify the power supply in order to just use one really big power supply.

Yeah.....
How about this
32 core TR2 was just a dual socket mobo with two 16 core TR1 chips OC and chilled. What would the reaction be is that was the case?

It was a BS show from intel and the entire thing stinks and will never see the light of day. Until they crack 10nm and drop prices AMD will do alright.

I’m sure Intel is hard st work on something though.

The top Xeon 8180 is a 205W part that has a base clock of 2.5GHz/3.8Ghz base/turbo, the 165W 8176 runs at 2.1/3.8GHz. Since Intel’s Cascade Lake is due in Q4 like this unnamed 28-core device, it too will use the updated Kaby/Coffee cores.

Since clock gain is far from linear with TDP, you can safely assume that this 28-core demo at 5.0GHz was both unrealistic can heavily overclocked while taking hundreds of watts more than stock. It was not presented as such. Intel ‘forgot’. That said the demo wasn’t a real product, wasn’t a real board, and was seems like reactionary vaporware.

sorry but charlie is the biggest anti-intel amd shill on the planet so i take anything he writes with a half gain of salt. that being said intel did muff this one, most tech enthusiast knew from the pics that a chiller was used and that chip was a very early demo unit (based off a xeon) and it was overclocked heavily but i can see how the less informed would be confused.

+1 here. Loving my Threadripper as well, can not wait for raid with non Intel SSDs soon . Intel has great parts no doubt but lately the scrambling feel and a hint of unprofessional, bad sportsmanship, and penny pinching has turned me off from Intel for now.

We have been up in arms from past AMD BS, and now that intel is pulling some stunts of their own we have forum members blindly defending a terrible stunt by intel.
It’s ok for us to be critical of our favorite companies, especially when they attempt to pull off what they did.
If the roles were reversed we would see our normal intel/Nvidia crazy members blasting AMD.

Funny, when Kabylake came out you had to do the same thing with Intel Z170 boards that weren't shipped with the proper bios.  You had to buy a Skylake CPU to flash your motherboard (or keep your old processor till a new BIOS was released) because Intel didn't give you the same type of customer service that AMD did.  At least AMD is taking care of it's customer base, where as Intel just continues to fleece you or pull the wool over your eyes by letting you think they are the superior brand by pulling stunts like this and having the media lap it up.  All this could be solved though if usb flashback would be a universal standard, and not patented technology by Asus.

All this stunt by Intel does is prove how scared they are by AMD, and that they know the writing is on the wall for them.  Let's hope that once EPYC 2 (64!! cores) gets into production that Intel will lose their stranglehold on the data center market and competition will return.  After all, they did threaten to keep AMD to 20% of market share, no matter the cost.  I wonder if they will return to their illegal business practices, and just continue to pay the fines because it's just the price of doing business?  ie they made more in profits than what the fines cost them.

He'll go out of his way to say anything bad about AMD, seriously.  Any post that he has a chance to talk smack about AMD, he'll do it.  Even went so far as to try to steer an intel vulnerability thread into an AMD one by bringing up the Hyper V "exploit" that requires several massive security breaches to already be in place for the attack to even take place.  So no matter how awesome your Threadripper is, and how jealous the rest of us are that you have one, it's like telling a Ford guy you just bought a Ferrari instead of a Mustang.

I noticed that about him, too. And many others. Actually funny to read them post.

People have their preferences..I will NEVER buy an AMD GPU....I will buy an NVidia card even if the AMD card is leaps and bounds better...why? Because I've never had luck with anything dating back to the 90s when they were ATi....I'll sacrifice performance for reliability...

Not saying I'm an nv fanboy (but I kind of am)...but people usually do have reasons..and even if they don't make sense to me or you, that's their right to do so..heh..

His comments don't necessarily put me off of buying AMD CPU's..but I'll make sure I watch what goes one with them...that's for sure.

The problem isn't why people comment on products, but how. Frustrations? I've experienced frustrations with Intel and Nvidia, as well. So what?

And AMD sends out boot kits (last resort) for BIOS flashes to maintain compatibility between new CPU's, and old motherboards which have not received BIOS updates yet. For example, if you want to purchase a new 2nd Gen Ryzen but want an older, cheaper motherboard you would need to purchase/borrow an older 1st Gen CPU, run the system and update the BIOS so it is compatible with the new 2nd Gen CPU. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-raven-ridge-boot-kit,36552.htm

If Intel did this, it would be labelled as "GENIUS", I'm sure. And I'd say the same thing if the situation was reversed (for those of you that have constantly mislabeled/misrepresented me as an AMD fanboy).

I've seen all sorts of systems fail for various reasons. Intel, AMD and Nvidia. They are all susceptible to failures and glitches. If I were you, I'd watch what goes on with ANY system. You'd be an idiot not to. I read a lot about Skylake and the ROG Strix 1070 before I made the purchase. The Strix had all sorts of fan failures (I never experienced any problem with the card myself), and when I fired up the system the MB was feeding the CPU 1.45V running stock (simple BIOS tweak to resolve). I also waited a long time before purchasing my daughter's Ryzen system because it was very glitchy, and in regard to RAM, still is, but it functions fine otherwise and ASUS is working with AMD to resolve some issues on the B350-F and get all RAM running as it should. Ryzen was a new system and glitches were expected. DYODD.

Speaking of due diligence, I'd go to a less biased forum when researching. I received much more information from the ROG forum in that regard. Great help.

2,300watts is insane

Nothing a pair of Corsair AX1600i PSUs cannot handle
