So recently my Pc just died while using it. Died as in power gone, does not respond to the power button. I didn't even smell something burning. Some trail and error I found the 8 pin PCI power cable into my GTX 980 ti to be the culprit. Powers on fine without it connected, does nothing with it.

Testing between top row and bottom row of the 8pin connecter with a multimeter shows a short circuit (except the sense pins).
I've been compulsively inspecting card and I can't see anything obviously broken, then again I'm not sure what to look for.

Is this card, along with my will to live, done for?

I was thinking maybe I can hook it up to a power supply for a while and check if anything gets hot. Or maybe I should remove the main chip, that way it will be broken for sure and I can stop obsessing.

Some pics for the eagle eyed:

Is there anything known to cause a short on the card I can check, or any idea please. I would love to be able to disassociate into video games again ☹️

Just use another 8-pin cable if there is a problem with your current one.

I agree that it’s worth checking to see if the power cable is the issue. I probably would go with a new power supply though. It could be just the cable but I would rather be safe then sorry when it comes to power issues. Also if you replace the power supply use the new wall socket cable as well. Some people try to use the old one but it’s vest to be 100% new.

Just to be clear the short circuit is on the 8pin connector on the card, not the cable coming from the PSU.

PSU seems fine, 12.2 V on both vga power cables

Oh, ok. You'll need to rma the card if you have any warranty remaining.

I am having the same exact issue except with a 6pin on a 970. Did you ever figure out the cause of the problem?

I thought I found a broken MOSFET on my 970, but, turns out the middle pin of the MOSFET is meant to be missing. :D

    Hi Everyone,

I just signed up for this forum after reading this thread and my recent problems this week.
The same problems occurred with my GPU. (EVGA 980ti sc+ ACX 2.0+). First I bought a new USP, then I thought it was the motherbord... So now those two new I found out it was the GPU.
When not connecting the GPU everything works fine. Same problem in another system after swapping the GPU.

    Anyone know how to proceed?

99.9% sure you have a shorted voltage 'MOSFET' tied to one of the power connectors. You will need to remove the cooler and test the voltage MOSFETs with a multimeter (continuity). Once/if you find which MOSFET(s) are faulty you will need to desolder one by one and re-test for continuity. When you no longer have the short you can either A) replace the faulty MOSFET(s) or B) pray and run the card at a lower TDP to compensate for the missing MOSFET(s)

    Best of luck.

Edit: As others have mentioned, please ensure your card is out of warranty before attempting the above.

If your card is under warranty ---> do not touch it with a soldering gun or make any physical changes other than things like TIM or the cooler

+1 on this. If your product is under warranty it is always better to contact our support team first as we can help with making sure you get a working product in the end. If you try to solder it or bake it or anything like that it could void your warranty. If you do not know if a product is in warranty, we can always let you know if you provide us with the serial number.

    Thanks guys,

I did contact support. They are now checking my SN if I can RMA the GPU.
The GPU won't be touched ;)
