I purchased a used PC with a Supernova 1000 P2. I was planning to keep the PSU and part out several other components, but the PSU seems to be much more dirty than I could clean with a couple cans of air. The machine came from a household with pets and smoking and the smoke residue/tar seems to be built-up in the PSU and some remaining dust and fur is clinging to the underside of the fan blades. Is there a way to open the PSU case for cleaning? And yes I do understand the dangers involved with opening the PSU.

In the event it is not possible to open the PSU to clean it then I am gonna sell it. Does anyone have an idea of what a reasonable sales price would be? Please take in to account its condition.

Also, I contacted EVGA but they said they wouldn't help and then said they couldn't help. And what I asked EVGA is if they offered a cleaning service I could pay for or give me guidance on finding a shop that could clean the PSU.

Edit: The PSU works without any indication of reduced performance. It just smells.

No point in cleaning it at this point. Exposure to cigarette tar residue voids the warranty. Opening the psu would also void the warranty.

If you want to open it up, just remove the 4 cover screws and the cover..Then you can also remove the 4 fan screws to remove the fan from the cover..Remove the fan connector from the fan header to complely remove the fan from the unit..No biggie.

As far as what it's worth used, I dunno, maybe half price..Look on eBay, there's a couple for under $100.

Thank you for that link. I did remove the screws, but failed to get the cover open. I couldn't get it to budge at all actually. And that includes removing the screw under the warranty sticker.

And thank you for looking at used comps on eBay. I also found the same values. Honestly, for the price I paid for the entire machine I don't have to get much money out of this PSU, but I will feel bad if I sell it and the buyer is upset that the PSU smells as it does.

Sorry. With the cigarette tar residue issue along with the voided warranty I would say the unit is worth $0.

Yeah, I think that is a fair way to look at it. Mayybeee I can find somebody that smokes indoors that won't notice the smell from the PSU, but I am afraid the only value normal buyers will see is in the unused cables. Luckily the previous owner kept them all in their pouch in the PSU box.

Nah, it's not worth $0..It works.

Take the cover off, clean it up a little and keep it..Or sell it..Whatever.

I would likely keep it if I could figure out how to remove the cover. Unscrewing the cover screws didn't even allow me to get the cover to wiggle at all. I'm afraid it's been crimped closed maybe?

I haven't opened my new EVGA G3 in the event I can find a way to clean the stinky P2 well enough.

The op never said it worked, and even if it does work cigarette tar residue is known to affect electronics that is why evga voids the warranty on products that have been exposed to cigarette smoke in the first place. I personally wouldn't buy a psu that has had its warranty voided due to being opened & cleaned because it was exposed to cigarette smoke.

Oh yup sorry. I fixed that and now feel dumb for the omission.

And I wouldn't have bought it either if I knew the extent of the contamination. It was setup in a garage when I went to pick it up, but it also spent a lot of time inside the person's apartment. And inside is probably where the worst of it occurred.

You should buy new PSU.
For me is somehow risky to buy second hand PSU.

For every people who didn't stop to smoke like me(arround 2 years without smoking) I recommend to get out of room to smoke and back inside after they finsh cigarette. On that way you will smoker much less. Electronic cigarettes could help because most of people smoke a lot near computer, than spend more money, sometimes people left cigarrette to burn and fire another very fast after first and smoke collect in room. I save arround 60 euro montly on cigarettes, but in countries where they cost more could be even 100-120 euro montly saved. 2 months good computer case.

Failed PSU is easiest to make very expensive damage in computer, worse than any other hardware.
Because of that condition of PSU and model deserve special attention.
New 1-1.2KW P2 are one of best models and most reliable on planet.

I have 1.2KW model and I start easy to look on
EVGA sites what could be bought with lower power if I switch to small PC in 2019.

Just remember if you sell that PSU you will need to remind the buyer it will not come with a warranty.

He will not sell probably PSU in such condition.
I will not sell mine as well, 1200 P2 stay with me forever.
Box is like new, still smell like I opened today. I repack new boxes because I have some changes in house, new tables etc and 1200 P2 box is like new. I must check PSU inside with lamp.
There is dust little, just little in PC, wait to be cleaned before cooling installation.
I believe no dust inside PSU at all. Because flat side is on top and fan not work, but case filter is below as well.
He is well protected.

Now from EVGA line I would choose.... depend of size of RIG.
If RIG is small I would use 850 P2. Reason is simple, strongest model from that size and good quality.
For little bigger 1000 T2.
I don't have habbit to save 50$ on 200W less power if PSU could be colder in fanless Mode and case size is same.

Absolutely. I will put in the listing the exact condition of the PSU and its warranty.

Honestly, if someone can direct me to how I can remove the case I would rather clean it and keep it. There was a thread someone pointed me too earlier, but it didn't show how he removed the case.

I think you can find over internet opened PSU.
If I estimated good you need to unscrew 4 screws... and pull top of PSU.

Maybe will someone explain better.

Well shoot. I think that may have been the one direction I didn't try when removing the cover. Pulling straight up. I feel so stupid now.

Can I use a multimeter to check to see if the capacitors are holding a charge?

And can I plug the PSU into a motherboard without plugging the PSU into a power outlet to discharge the capacitors if they are still holding a charge?

On side you will find small hooks and they hold top part connected as well.
You can't only unscrew 4 points and pull off. They hold top part as well.

Hello,

I personally wouldn't recommend opening a power supply if you don't have the right equipment or experience. Power supplies can be pretty dangerous as some of the caps (bigger caps) can store a lot of volts and essentially give you a heck of a shock. The caps can hold this power for an extended amount of time as well. So once again, I wouldn't recommend it unless you know how to fully discharge the PSU. However, continue as you please at your own discretion.

Regards,
Thomas N.
