A USAF Captain who deserted 35 years ago has been found. Hopefully some jail time will come his way after a most probable court martial.

Should get 35 years in jail. One for each year he was missing/hiding.

He was supposed to fly over to The Netherlands for a month, but that was too difficult for him due to his depressed state and pushed him over the edge? It sounds to me like he may have had a mental issue. I wish I could have such cushy duty.

I take it from reading everyone's comments on here you're all a bunch of perfect little angels that have never broken any laws in one form or the other.

Would you rather have seen the guy go off the deep end and kill a bunch of people instead? It's probably a good thing he deserted based on his mental state at the time.

You've obviously never been in the armed forces before. If you were you would know that there are actually very easy ways for an enlisted officer to get out and resign their commission without having to become a deserter. The methods are far easier than for an enlisted non commissioned officer.

I take it you have no concept of Armed Forces service. I take it you don't know that rules and regulations apply, regardless....I take it you don't know that he could have claimed mental issues EVEN IN 1983, and been judged unfit to serve and gotten an other than honorable discharge..

I take it you're all for "Oh, I don't like this law so I'll just ignore it" then?

I don't need to be in the armed forces to know what it can do to people my father and Uncle both shot themselves after serving in Vietnam. What's easy for one doesn't make it easier for others. Have an open mind and don't be so quick to judge people based on what you read on the internet.

    That's a fair assessment.

America is a business. Every time a nation opposes their world view they will find reason to deliver "freedom". Well done in the middle east, by the way. Bomb some countries, help form an uprising, leave your weapons to ISIS, then send your boys in to clean it up. I'm not surprised this guy ran.

Not sure how I feel about this since we have given people a pass if they deserterted after being drafted for Vietnam. Guess the draft is kind of different but I feel at least this guy didn’t run away and get anyone killed as a result.

Regardless of his reasoning, a punishment is a necessity. Fear and desertion are contagious. Maybe not 35 years in prison as some claim but consequences are unavoidable.

Ya know, people like this trash endanger the mission..their brothers and sisters...these acts of desertion should never be tolerated..and should be punished to the utmost.

This dude might not have (tho I have, and neither do you, no true idea if he did or not) put people in danger, but they certainly CAN.

There is NO reason to run out and shirk your duty...go thru the proper channels...don't make the military waste time and resources ...

My Father, who was a colonel in the Airforce from 1975 to 1995 ..and was enlisted from 1953 to 1956....did not like this man...I REMEMBER this case...If my Dad was angry, there was a reason. And I'll side with the men and women who remained and did their sworn duty over this trash.

I wonder if there's a statute of limitations on this.. or maybe not; 35 year long continuing crime.

I am not against a punishment but at this point I think it shouldn’t be a major one. Nobody who served with him is probably still in the army and the news story of a stiff punishment would not go over well in the news. I also don’t feel it’s the same army now as it was 35 years ago since we would be talking about the Cold War going on and the Berlin Wall still standing. It’s easy to say now that you would stay in the army but the pressures 35 years ago are different.

I should clarify that I feel the military shouldn’t really get involved with more then a small slap on the wrist to avoid being a news story. I would assume that he has passports, drivers license, bank accounts all set up under fake names or stolen identies. So while the military might give him just a slap on the wrist the crimes committed to create a new identity could lock him up for years.

my father died in Vietnam and three uncle were pretty messed up when they came home, this guy though was not in Nam, he was a officer and returning to the states and just walked, not even telling his family (allegedly ) that he was even alive. in 83 he had much more help available for his "depression" and could have easily resigned his commission, instead he ran and hid like a coward. no respect for him one bit. i say try him and apply the law equally
