Hey all,

Trying to upgrade the RAM on my X58 SLI. Currently have have a pair of corsair 2GB ddr3 1333mhz and just bought a pair of corsair vengeance 8GB ddr3 1600mhz. Tried installing the new sticks but even though I got past the initial startup beep, it doesn't make it to BIOS and just sits there. I've looked around to determine if the X58 can even handle a stick of RAM with 8GB and have found conflicting answers. Is there something in the BIOS i need to tweek to get them to work properly or am I just undertaking a fruitless endeavor?

Never mind, just needed to update the BIOS and now the 8GB sticks work just fine.

The memory controller on that CPU isn't that powerful so when using 8GB DIMM modules don't overclock them too much.

Im having this problem with x58 FTW3 mobo, which bios update makes the 8gb support for each slot and how much amount of memory we can put on the full six slots, more than 24 ¿?
there are many questions about it.
    thanks.

I would not attempt more than 24GB and that would be on a classified X58 motherboard.

depends on the cpu you have, all the i7's as well as the W36xx xeon's only support 24GB total, so 6x4GB or 3x8GB. now if you have say a xeon x5680 or x5690 they support 288GB but your mileage may vary using it in a X58 board. i would just go with the 3x8GB route and call it good, you can still use 1600mhz dimms but depending how well that first gen IMC in the cpu is will determine your exact speed

I have 48 GB  (6 8GB sticks of Crucial Ballistix Sport) in my X58 with an i7 950 quad core cpu (going to upgrade to a i7980 hex core this week).  I have the last bios installed.  Windows Ultimate 7-  works perfect, and have run 2 8GB sticks for years without any problems.   I went to 48GB ram because I'm doing HD video, and also the reason for the i7 980 cpu.  It may make some difference, as the HD editing is a bit slow with video effect plugins.

48GB Ram works in the X58 SLI with the hex core i7 980
Video editing is indeed improved noticably-  not sure how much is from the CPU and how much from the Ram-  but I have better and faster video previewing, not previously possible with less ram and slower CPU.
But it ALSO works in an X58 with an i7 quad core 960.
