Yet another flaw in current processors which is similar to Meltdown and Spectre.  Bios and firmware fixes are apparently in the works, and anywhere from a 2-8% performance hit.

Sorry if this post is lacking.  I just don't know if linking to the original article is enough, but it seems predictive branching is going to come to and end, and air gaping old server hardware is going to be a must.  With Intel and OEMs abandoning old hardware, and now this flaw being revealed, it seems a little too good to be true to force everyone to upgrade their perfectly functioning 5 year old servers that Intel is not patching.

Is this like the others where it requires the machine to already be exploited to run or does this work with minimal permissions?

I would say the answer is probably no since the "other" Intel exploits can be exploited by simply viewing the wrong website and require no additional permissions or user confirmation at all. I think maybe you were thinking about similar exploits on AMD systems which did at least require elevated permissions and existing exploitations to run.

I feel like now is a bad time to upgrade, or even own a "legacy" system.  I have a sandybridge Xeon that can only be software patched, but is still hardware level exploitable.  I was going to go ryzen+, but now it seems that is a no go.  This is ridiculous.  It seriously makes me wonder if this is just Intel's way to force old servers out?  Like they knew about these flaws but left them there because of the performance gains, and now that they have been leaked, the only way to fix it, is to buy new hardware or else your entire farm is dangerous!

I felt that whole story will be endless agony immediately, after week when I talk with guy who is expert for hardware but specific for processors. And I describe that on other forum but people obviously think that 2 patches will fix everything.
Man told he will replace platform with AMD. But I didn't heared with him from then and I don't know what he done.
He couldn't predict that in EARLY 2015 when estimate that my decision to upgrade from i7-3770K on i7-5820K is smarter than Z170 and i7-6700K.
Now they will uncover new potential treats one by one.
And everything what happen is different than Intel promise in weeks before.
They promised painless and easy secure fix very soon to avoid compensation.

Someone asked what would be real compensation when I sad to people get better models and how when all are bugged.
There is a even better compensation, for customers, much worse for Intel, to back people money to buy Ryzen or Threadripper.
If someone bought i7-5930K he could buy almost 1920X now.
That would be fair, if can't compensate to people with more performance, giving them because their platform is slower after fix even not secure again, omputers become unstable Intel should to deal with AMD for nicer price and send own customers AMD processors.
    But that will not happen.
Only we could wait new silicon, because if you buy now and ignore all warnings Intels marketing of new fixed silicon and their explanation why people should replace old and bugged processors and whole platform even 10 months old will make you to feel very bad.

I see a new see a new BIOS for my system's board released this month but I have no idea if it's to address this newer ongoing vulnerably in Intel processors. I would call Lenovo Support but the two times I have in the past questioning about BIOS they were clueless. I guess they don't have documentation or change log of what's in new versions.    Sigh... Joy?

I stopped caring. I'm sure I'm not the only one. If you want security don't connect to the internet.

I kinda feel the same way but that's like saying if want better gas mileage don't drive your car.

Hell even the device we use to connect to the global system of interconnected computers is under attack.
