Does VB interfere with FaH?  I've been doing a little reading this morning and found an old post that blamed VB for some FaH problems.  I downloaded the BOINC client without VB.

thanks,
Ian

Re: BOINC Qs 2018/05/20 07:26:44 (permalink)
I got BOINC installed and the team set up.  I'm doing the World Community Grid and the project is Smash Childhood Cancer.  I understand that I need to leave one core open for FaH.  I didn't see an option to limit core use.  In the computing options, I set usage at 85% of CPUs in case that meant cores (I have an 8 core FX8350) and 100% time.  It looks like 7 of my cores are going at 85-95% and one is at 30-50%, so I think it may be doing what I intend.  I want it to be CPU only.  Under the activity tab, I have selected "suspend GPU".  Is there something else I need to do to prevent BOINC and FaH from competing for resources?  It seems to have downloaded a WU and is in work.

thanks,
Ian

That sounds about right. fwiw I just do 75% so I can still surf or whatever.

I think I'm going to do that too.  It really locks the computer down at 100%.  I may have to ditch my 120G SSD soon too and reload to the new 500 I bought.  Sometimes it locks up and causes a BSOD.  If I soft reboot, mobo won't recognize it as a boot device.  If I shut it completely down it comes up normally.  I think the added stress of folding and now this crunching is amplifying the problem.

I have always run the full BOINC installation including VB, Have had no issues when Folding which I am currently doing after the Pentathlon.

Yes leave a CORE free for Folding per GPU. How many GPU's do you have installed??

EDIT, From you sig, you have a 1050, So 1x CORE free is good enough

Re: BOINC Qs 2018/05/20 09:14:19 (permalink)
Yes, one 1050Ti is what I have.  I recently upgraded the rig from an old HD5770 and a Phenom II X4 985 to the FX and a 1050Ti.  Too cheap to spend any more. Figured I'd upgrade to near what my existing mobo would do and then in 3 or 4 years do a whole new AM4 build.  20/20 hindsight tells me that I should have spend the extra couple 20s and gotten a standard 1060 instead of the 1050Ti.  Kind of a big performance jump there, but what's done is done.

I've been playing around with the percentage of CPUs number.  At 85% I had 6 tasks going at once with one waiting. At 90, the remaining task started.  That doesn't affect what my cores are doing though.  All 8 of them are bouncing from 20 up to 100%.

I moved a lot of music and stuff over to the new drive from the 120, so now it's got 47GB free.  What would you like to know about the mobo?

Just my 2 cents... I have found Intel to perform better than AMD when Crunching. Sorry..

I have 2x AMD rigs, they are always slower in task completion times, except for 2 projects, just can not remember which ones.. one of the 2x Bill's will drop in and let us know...
FX-8370E and a FX 9590..
My other 12x rigs are all Intel or Xeon.

I've always been an AMD guy... I'm cheap.  LOL.  This is actually my first Nvidia card.  I was always in the AMD/ATI camp for graphics cards too. Yup, Intel usually does better at single threaded stuff like this and gaming than AMD and in "productivity" tasks, AMD edges Intel out.  It's a hot topic for the ford/chevy guys.  I'm not one of those guys. "Run what you brung" is my camp.  Hehe..

Re: BOINC Qs 2018/05/20 12:31:54 (permalink)
As long as you have 1-2 cores free and you have suspended GPU you can run BOINC and [link=mailto:F@H]F@H[/link] simultaneously with no issues.  If you plan on websurfing or something at the same time I'd recommend keeping 2-3 cores available.  I haven't checked on my other rigs in a while, but I know both of them are running 128GB SSDs and don't seem to lock up that much.  I think most the restarts I get are either predicated from Windows Updates (one day I'll install Linux on them) or from just power surges.  As for the hardware you use, anything that contributes is good, that's the whole point of distributed computing.  Welcome aboard and let us know if you have any other questions or issues.

Thanks for the welcome.  I keep eyeballing video cards to add to my rig but can't bring myself to drop the necessary money.  We'll see how long I end up folding before I lose interest.  My hobbies usually end up being expensive and short lived.

Haywire, Welcome glad to see you getting it figured out.

I know what you mean by expensive hobbies, I got started about October last year.  Started with an AMD 1700X system I built with a 1080ti.

WARNING CRUNCHING MAY BECOME AN ADDICTION!

Now I have 4 systems going.
1- AMD 1700X w/1080 ti (Crunching and Folding)
2 - AMD 1600 w/GTX 760 (Crunching World Community Grid Only)
3 - (Redneck 1) Dual E5-2670 Xeon processors w/GTX1070ti (Crunching and Folding)
4 - (Trailer Park Queen) Dual E5-2680 V2 Processors w/GTX 1060 (Crunching only)

Pic of Redneck 1 and Trailer Park Queen (ignore the mess of wires behind the monitor lol)

My advise is to start out slow and take your time. See how much your electric bill goes up. Many of us cut back in the warmer months when you need to have the A/C on
It can cost a fortune to run computer and the A/C.
Then we run full force in the cooler weather and heat our homes with computers

There is a ton of good used servers and hardware for pennies on the dollar on eBay

I have been tied up, will be back to normal Tuesday.

Re: BOINC Qs 2018/05/21 02:15:32 (permalink)
Right now my rig is still under 300 watts with it folding and crunching. That's about $20 on the electric bill. Didn't consider the a/c having to pump it out of the house. I'm in the basement though and it's too cool for me most days anyway.  I downloaded boinc to my samsung tab S2. Now that's really slow.

Edit... Had another BSOD sometime last night and as usual, it wouldn't recognize the 128 till I did a hard reboot this morning.  Bah.

BOINC is also more flexible than FAH.
If you are worried about your power bill, you can schedule specific times for BOINC to run.

Disable hardware acceleration in your browser to reduce slowdown when crunching on GPU for some projects.
You can play with what % of cores are used, since some projects I have found cause slowdowns while browsing, while others run at 100% and I can browse with no noticeable impact.

I leave 1 or 2 cores free always and switch between FAH and GPU crunching as needed.

There's a lot of money in those wooden frames there PolarBear...  :)

My pad finished it's first set of 8 WCG WUs a few hours ago.  Haven't received credit for it yet.  The PC got about 4300 points for 12 returned results.  Don't know how long it was down last night, so I don't have any idea what the ppd will be like.  I thought about OCing the CPU, but I read that you really don't get much out of these 8350s without water cooling and socket heat becomes a factor pretty quickly too.  Besides, I need to work out this BSOD issue before doing anything else. Formatting and reloading will involve taking my rig over to a buddy's house that has actual broadband to download updates, the 150KB/sec dsl that I'm on here won't cut it.

Still reading.... my bsods might not be drive related.  Looks like the latest Nvidia drivers are causing bsods when monitoring software is being used... like HWmonitor for instance, which I have been running these past few days keeping an eye on my temps.  I'll leave all that off from now on and see what happens.

I wouldn't worry about ppd much with crunching.
Different projects can have wildly different points distribution for the amount of "work" put in.
Validation times can also vary from instant, to days before points are awarded.

Get everything running stable first.
WCG is pretty easy on your hardware compared to mathematics research projects like PrimeGrid.

I have the most fun setting goals within projects where you can earn badges...I like badges lol...
WCG is also good for this.

Haywire,
Yep those cases are top notch cheap!  They actually work really good and I would recommend them to anyone that needs
to slap together some second hand server hardware.

Hope you get the BSOD sorted,  I had the 8350 and was really happy with it but started having major issues so just retired it
and got my 1700X last september-ish.

No troubles since turning off the temp monitoring software, we'll see how it goes.  I was offered the use of a spare laptop that I thought I might crunch on, but turns out it was an E1-2100 APU with HD-8210 gpu.  It was incredibly slow just trying to run windows 10, so I passed on the offer.

Which Temp monitoring software are you using??

I use CoreTemp with no issues over Win 7 and 10, plus Server 2012 R2....

Hope you get it worked out..
