Will Intel ever have a recall on their processors due to meltdown spectre? It's been shared online that micro code being released by Intel would infact damper cpu performance. In addition Microsoft has released several patches to the masses.

Never, customers had chance during first 2 weeks with activity to ask compensation but Intel damage control success to decive people. Better to say it was to small number of people who estimate immediately what Intel do.
Other searched for patch for silicon error like easter eggs.
First 4 weeks no one played games I think, everyone measure performance drop before and after fix.

I don't think they even did a recall when the original Pentium had the error with long division instead they just released a Pentium Pro.

Not because gamers, enthusiasts, what if companies decide to send them 50-100 Xeons with 22 cores.
That 's more money them whole forum with desktop processors.
They can't say We will replace only desktop processors and corporations will need to keep old models with bug.
There is a positive side, we are not more vulnerable than before 2 years, only we didn't know nothing.
Always will show someone who will find some way to enter inside, no matter on CPU.

Intel will argue that the chip is not defect and the vulnerability can be patched.

I didn't read, where are we now.
I mean what happen with Meltdown and Patch...
I told to myself I will not bother about Meltdown and Spectre but silicon bug can't be patched as they want to people believe.
They can't find so many patched to fix everything...on many ways others could abuse flaw in silicon.

I could say only in my name, Intel serve me better than AMD last 10 years, longer period I had good performance in games, AMD faster become weak for newest games. I don't know now situation with Ryzen and Threadripper... first I don't have money to change like that but even if I think better I would wait some 8 core capable to reach 4.7GHz at least. You never know, it's small chance but maybe Intel Z390 and 8 core model arrive without thermal paste, soldered properly. 3.7 GHz Frequency 4.3 GHz Turbo. That will be nice processor.

I can't decide, if I upgrade to Haswell-E 8 cores I need to pay at least 400 euro but I have motherboard.
From other side maybe price of Intel 8 cores for Z390 cost similar 400-420 and I could sell my stuff and buy motherboard.
    There is a few combinations.

Say if they did do a recall, what would they replace them with? The flaw is in the design in ALL cpu's

It would be fantastic but the fact that they have now stopped making patches and that manufacturers have refused to even support their legacy hardware, it shows you just how much they truly care about us, the consumer.  We are seriously boned until new hardware is released that doesn't have these hardware bugs.  Intel will downplay it and will probably spend a sizeable chunk of their marketing to do so.

I don't know, only I could say that X99 serve me so well and really no any complains.
I play sometimes and older games where GPU work on 650MHz, don't even boost on 3D clock, but CPU work up to 50% and really work excellent. I only hope I will be able to pull 4500MHz on 6 core with watercooling and I could wait easy fixed silicon.

Best I could get for my CPU is 200 euro now in my country.
Before few days I saw i7-6900K new for 510 euro. I'm not sure what to do on summer.
To sell my and add extra money or save 300 euro for some newer generation.
But new generation will need new motherboard, new CPU block, probably new memory and 8 cores will not cost 300euro,
he will cost minimum 450 euro.
If I decide to wait I will definitely go on mATX size.
I order watercooling parts with possibility to one day I have small res/combo attached to 240-280mm radiator in smalle case and some 600-650W PSU.

For me I am waiting to see the war with AMD shake out and give Intel a kick in the pants. I don't think we will see a great improvement for a year or two then it will be processors made to beat AMD from Intel. I also hope AMD does well we see them become a real player in the CPU and graphics market.

There is a CPU Vulnerability - I'm not sure it qualifies as a "Flaw" as the CPUs work as designed

And you must be a sysadmin on the very system that hypervisor is on, and you can ONLY take data from the very machine that the hypervisor is on.  You are not able to do this attack from outside of the network, nor from across the network.  This is a useless attack which already requires the sysadmin to be dirty, which in that case they can already get whatever information they so desire without needing to resort to this type of attack.  This is like saying "hey AMD I can steal the stuff from your locked safe by using a coat hanger, even though I already have the combination to your lock, I'm just not going to use the combo even though I know it will take me several HOURS to use the coat hanger.  And BTW I know you'll be recording me doing it the entire time because I can see the cameras right there staring me in the face (because I will be using my sysadmin credentials to steal info)."

Once again a useless attack on AMD which requires a significant amount of already serious security breaches to be made before the attack can be done.

Re: Will Intel ever have a recall on their processors due to meltdown spectre? 2018/05/30 09:29:58 (permalink)
No. Recalls are done for defective and dangerous products. Some nerds years later figuring out a way to exploit something isn't reason for a recall. If that were the case most software and hardware would be constantly being recalled.
