Hi all. I have tried everything I know to try and resolve this problem. I have an older dell dimension e520 running Xp media center with sp 3? I have only upgraded the memory to 4gb, and installed an evga 8400gs graphics card. When I first installed it, I had sound through the hdmi cord to my tv. Couple of days later when I turned it back on there was no sound. I've checked in device settings and there are drivers installed, and it says they are working. I have uninstalled system sound drivers, sp3, and clean install of newest drivers from nvidia site. Still no sound. Reinstalled sp3, and system sound drivers, It does not give me the option to turn on hdmi sound in neither sound settings nor nvidia control panel. But the system shows the drivers are installed and working correctly. If anyone has an idea on how to get this working again I would greatly appreciate it. I don't do much with this pc except watch movies on it on my hd tv so buying new parts is out of the question.

In your motherboard BIOS, try disabling onboard audio..Most motherboards should auto-disable onboard sound when another device like your 8400 GS w/HDMI is detected though.

You can also read through the link below on how to configure settings..No need for a SPDIF cable on your 8400 GS w/HDMI though, skip that part.

Either disabling onboard audio and/or selecting the proper Playback Device in Windows are the most common things..And make sure the audio input on your TV is set to HDMI in it's settings.

Thanks for the reply Bob, I disabled the onboard sound in the bios. When I did it gave me no sound options at all under sounds in control panel. I doesn't give me the option in the drop down box for hdmi sound with or without the onboard sound disabled. I have used multiple different drivers for the graphics card as well, from the oldest to the newest one available. When I disable onboard sound, I get a beep from the mb speaker upon startup. Only a single beep. When I renewable it there is no beep.

Might help to know what TV you have, but setting up HDMI to a TV is usually pretty straight-forward/simple.

Could be the card is faulty or needs reseated, or the HDMI cable/connections, or the settings in the TV are wrong.

Also, Dell stuff is really weird sometimes and needs to use their own proprietary drivers, see if there's a graphics driver here you can try..Try the 'analyze your system' tool for driver updates or maybe try that NVIDIA 82.68 A01 one..I have heard of instances before where a driver specifically from Dell is required.

You could try running Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU)in Safe Mode to uninstall the graphics driver and optional driver components..Then install the NVIDIA graphics driver again using the Custom (Advanced) option and selecting to install only PhysX System Software along with the Graphics Driver..Might try installing the HD Audio driver too, if no joy..Or run DDU to remove the NVIDIA driver and then install the Dell graphics driver or run the 'analyze your system' tool.

I have a Hisense 55" 4K hd tv. It has 2 60hz hdmi, and 2 30hz hdmi ports. I have cable and pc plugged into the 60hz ports. I have changed hdmi cords as wee as reseated the graphics card. I will try different settings for the tv, and drivers for the card as well and will get back to you. Thanks for the help

Well I used the display uninstaller, changed a few settings on the sound for my tv, and reinstalled the drivers that came on the cd with the video card. Got the sound to work! But.... now I have an unidentifiable audio device on hide definition audio bus. When I check to see what it is, it shows as an IDT hd audio device. I haven't reinstalled it as of yet. I might just let well enough be at the moment. If I do install it later I will let you know what happens with it. But in the mean time, I thank you very much for your help!

You're welcome, glad you made some progress..The IDT HD audio device is the onboard/motherboard audio controller, I think, if the driver got uninstalled that's normal..You can Google it and get lots of hits..Maybe get that driver from the Dell driver page in the link I posted above or from your Dell driver CD..Won't hurt anything to just leave it be though since the 8400 GS is your new audio device.
