Anybody have a good explanation as to why the Dark (and many other motherboards for that matter) have 2 different Intel NICs? The Dark for example has an i219 and an i210.

Been wondering this for a while and have seen no clear, logical explanation.

Thank you.

They are 2 different types of NICs.  One's a Physical Layer port (PHY) only (i219V) and the other is a Media Access Control (MAC) + PHY port (i210AT).

There are many reasons for more than one port.  For example, you can connect one to your regular router for internet connection, while also having it connect directly to another device on your network or a NAS system for data backup.  In the X299 Dark's case, it also supports teaming, which can greatly improve your bandwidth and/or stability.

For many people, they may never use more than one network port, but a great number of power users can easily improve the way they use many devices in their environments.

Terrific explanation Lee. (Thanks also to bcavnaugh who also PMed me with good information). Thanks for explaining why the two ports might be useful too. Hopefully other people - who may have been wondering too - find this useful too.

Thanks again.

219 is built in to the chipset, so doesn't waste a PCI-E lane, and is basically free as far as power consumption goes.
Stick with the 219V - it's a good NIC and there's no reason why you shouldn't use it.

Re: Intel NICs i219 and i210 (on X299 Dark) 2020/12/29 16:29:53 (permalink)
I know I'm bumping an old thread, but this is one of the top results searching for i210 vs i219 so here's a clarification answer:

the i210 is a more expensive component than the i219.  The i210 is directly attached to the CPU via PCIe whereas the i219 is going through the chipset -> DMI -> CPU.  So in theory if you want the absolutely lowest latency use the i210.

Practically it's unlikely to matter either way.

If you're like me trying to set things up in linux and you're not sure which port is connected to i210 vs i219 (pfsense/untangle) you can run 'lspci' to find the bus # and name of the interface and 'ethtool -i eth0' to find the eth# to bus # link.   You can also inspect the motherboard and find the chip labeled i210 and it's (probably) connected to the ethernet port it's nearest.

Thanks for the infos, so anyone can show how to team them up ? and the teaming will prove better on gaming?

NIC teaming is usually used for a cheap way to increase bandwidth or provide failover in case one link dies (usually you have them connected to separate switches if you do this) it will not help with latency.
