I installed the the April Windows 10 update (1803) earlier this week and since then I have been having many KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED blue screens and black screen lockups (if I leave the computer idle).  I loaded the memory dumps into windbg and it attributes the bluescreen to PrecisionX_x64 each time.  I have reinstalled the latest nvidia GPU drivers and the uninstalled/reinstalled the latest Precision XOC with no improvement; the blue screens persist.  I would just uninstall Precision XOC, but unfortunately I have the 970 SC that requires down clocking the GPU clock by 100 MHz so it does not crash my games.  Any suggestions?

You have 10 days to roll back to your previous Windows 10 version (1709 or whatever) as long as the Windows.old folder still exists and you (or Disk Cleanup) didn't delete it, then see if it matters..To see the current Windows 10 version, type in and run winver from the search box.

Go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Recovery -> Go back to the previous version of Windows 10 -> Get started to begin the roll back.

After you uninstall Precision XOC and restart your PC, delete the Precision XOC folder located in the Program Files (x86)\EVGA folder before installing Precision XOC again.

What you said there is concerning, like maybe the 970 SC has one foot in the grave..If possible, you may want to test it in another compatible PC.

You might try using Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode to uninstall the NVIDIA Graphics Driver, components and leftovers and trying out another/older driver.

    Just a few suggestions/ideas here.

Thanks! This seems to be working so far, thought it has only been about 12 hours.  But so far no blue screens or lockups, and it made it through the night for the first time.

This was going to be my last resort; it feels like it is just delaying the inevitable unless they really plan to fix Precision XOC soon; so I would prefer to get the problem solved now if possible.

This is a known problem for the EVGA 970 SC; basically the factory overclock was too aggressive. Anytime a game goes from low utilization to high in a very short period of time the voltage overshoots and causes a crash. I have two of these cards and they both behave the same and have done so since they were pretty close to new (since new really, but I didn't put the puzzle together and find the right information for a while).  When I first hit this problem I tried all the normal debug stuff, try it in different machines, w/ different monitors, w/ fresh install of OS, w/ different driver versions, etc.  I finally found the information about the voltage/down clock and this fixed it 100%.  In Elite: Dangerous a bunch of people with EVGA 970 SCs hit this problem; apparently black space to all the sudden lots of geometry exacerbated this voltage overshoot problem.

Where can I find this "information about the voltage/down clock"? I've been fighting frequent crashes of my dual EVGA GTX 970s for months.

I can't find the original threads about this anymore, since it was about three years ago.  Here is one link which mentions it, but it is not the one with their final conclusion: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/164097-Constant-crashing-to-desktop

Basically Elite: Dangerous was seeing a lot of black screen lockups and crashes to desktop and in debugging it they were seeing one crash cause primarily with people who had Evga 970 SC cards (and occasionally other 9 series cards).  They worked with Nvidia on this and found that when the card went from low utilization to high in a very short period of time the voltage would overshoot and cause the card to crash. After a lot of back and forth the Elite: Dangerous folks concluded there was nothing they could do about it and Nvidia concluded they could not fix it with a driver change. So if you had this card it was down clock or live with the crashes.

I down clock my "core clock" or "GPU clock" (depending on if you use MSI or precision X) by 100 MHz, but other people have needed more or less; so you may want to try different increments of 25 or 50 MHz. Since learning this I have found several other games which crash if I don't down clock, so now I leave it down clocked all the time. With both of my 970 SC cards down clocked I have had 100% stability.

Thanks for the info. I was having a lot of in-game crashes. Then I got Precision X just so I could control the fan. Then I started getting KMODE crashes. I was ready to throw the whole thing through the window. I'll see if downclocking can help. And switching to MSI Afterburner, assuming it will work with the EVGA cards.

I know this thread is a month old now, but my system has been doing essentially the same thing. I've got an EVGA Z370 mb and a pair of 970 FTWs in SLI. KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (062518-6453-01.dmp 6/24/2018 22:35:29 KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED 0x0000001e ffffffff`c0000005 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000008 00000000`00000000 nvlddmkm.sys nvlddmkm.sys+1ec3dd x64 ntoskrnl.exe+198330). Mine seems to happen while my system is at rest. I'll lock it, and wander off to adult for a bit or whatever, and come back and my Acer Predator X34 (via DisplayPort) will be in sleep mode, but my secondary, an older Acer X193W via VGA to DVI adapter on the same card) will have the blue light on it's power button which indicates powered on, but the screen will be black. I have to hard reset at that point, and when it comes back up, the nvlddmkm bugcheck is in my dumps folder. I've done all the various recommended steps from folks online (full DDU uninstall of the Nvidia drivers, clean install, etc) and switched to Afterburner for a while without much change, IIRC. I wish there was some way to just tell the damn cards to cool themselves as needed so I could go without either for a while to see if they behave. Anyway, at this point, I'm at wits end.

So, my question is, did removing Precision X actually solve the problem for the folks in here? I've tried it before, and will happily try it again, but I want to be able to game without my cards overheating.

People have been saying that any nvidia driver past 391.35 has an increased chance of receiving the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED blue screen. See if driver 391.35 fixes the issue for you.

Update: Apparently I hallucinated ripping PXOC and switching to Afterburner while this issue has been ongoing, or I did it just before and the time screwed me up or something. Whatever the case, I uninstalled PXOC and installed Afterburner and (fingers crossed) haven't crashed out since.

Also, AIDA64 still has this issue with KMODE bluescreens. Its an issue with how some apps are polling sensors.

I have 2 EVGA GTX 1080 Ti in SLI and have the same issue. If I boot Windows and let it sit idle, almost everytime within 10 mins it will BSOD with a Kmode_Exception. It seems that XOC does not save its fan settings properly too, every time I boot up, they randomly change and I have to re-apply the settings.

Apparently over on the AIDA64 site they claim to have it fixed this in their latest BETA.
"We believe we've found the root cause of the issues concerning Windows 10 April 2018 Update (Version 1803 / Build 17134) based systems.  The timer that AIDA64 uses for BCLK measurement is also used by a new Win10 component.  Most likely that component is used for GPU profiling.  And when AIDA64 and Win10 both use the timer for their own purposes in the same time, the system could become unstable.  We've had to disable polling for BCLK, so from now on AIDA64 will only measure BCLK once, and then use the last value until AIDA64 gets restarted. "
     https://forums.aida64.com...-1803-timer-collision/
Maybe this is a hint for EVGA.

I've never had an issue with AB causing a crash.

Not specifically on topic but my 980 needs downclocking for around 100MHz as well :-(.

Another interesting observation about this issue. The KMode crash only seems to happen if the machine has a fresh boot and is allowed to sit idle. It will usually happen within 15-20 mins then. Also, the PXOC settings will save properly and show up correctly when checked until the KMode crash, then the settings such as Fan Auto/Manual, etc. will be randomly changed. This only seems to happen when or after the reboot when a KMode crash occurs. If I boot and immediately use Windows by running a game or other application, it does not crash and I can then leave it to sit idle for hours or even days.

So glad I found this thread. I kept getting the K_mode_exception BSOD after finishing hours and hours of stress testing with realbench, OCCT, and Prime for an i9 7980xe dual 1080ti build. After uninstalling Precision XOC, I've never had the BSOD again. Thanks!

I too spent a lot of time stress testing ram, mb, etc. Everything tested fine. I am still dealing with the KMode since it's not too often but still enough to be a pain! Maybe EVGA will get this fixed one day soon, eh?

Why would you use ocx instead of msi afterburner (which is updated almost weekly) ?
Ocx has been bad for years and years, and barely gets updated, if ever.
Just wondering, not a hate post or anything.

No worries, you are right. Just sheer laziness and the fact that my rig boots incredibly fast so I have been dealing with the occasional KMode BSOD. I know I need to do it but was hoping that EVGA would update or fix it. I think it's time to upgrade!

This was driving me nuts I de-lidded, changed motherboards, changed cooling, tried all RAM settings and never realized it would've been XOC since I have 2x 1070 iCX.  Just uninstalled and looking forward to a week of stability.
