I have been doing some research and just want to sanity check some things with this great group. I am looking into building a new rig. My X58 Intel 950 is showing its age.
It seems that the best CPU for high end gaming is the i7-8700K. I am assuming that a i9 current gen is overkill? The main goals for this rig is gaming on max settings for current games and future games (within reason).
It seems that puts me in the z370 series of motherboards.

Do you guys think the 8700k will be a good pick for the long haul or should I be looking at the more current gen CPU's. As far as a budget goes, I'd like to keep things reasonable (3kish and under (USD)).

Thanks!

Case: SilverStone TJ10, PSU: Corsair AX850, OS: Windows 7 x64 Pro, HDD: WD Caviar Black 1TB

Over 6 physical cores seems to be a waste as games do not use that many.

What GPU and monitor resolution are you going to use ?

16 GB of RAM, SSD for your Main drive  and a modern GPU would really make your X58 a good system

I have 24 GB or RAM now, I feel like my WD Caviar Black is slowing me down. I was told that looking at a 1080 type GPU would not work on my X58 as it would be bottlenecked. I currently have a GTX 960 installed. I am also iffy on my processor now as it did not pass the intel diagnostic test for IMC...however after I undid my OC the system is quite stable...and the processor is not supported on that intel tool anyway...still it made me start thinking of a new rig. As far as resolution, I dont need 4K. Nice to have not need to have.

The 8700k is probably the best CPU for gaming and will be suitable for quite some time. The i9 series are more designed for content creation and rendering things.
Depending on how desperate you are for a new system it may be wise to see what the new Nvidia graphics cards will be like.

Guess you Need to update your signature then ?

Installing an SSD to replace a mechanical drive results in speed you can see on the whole system.  Use your WD black to store files.

I've run 1080 FE in my X58 RIG with no issues

Cool GTX, thank you! So you think a 1080Ti would run at it's full potential on my rig? I think I will try what you suggest and go with a SSD. Do you have any recommendations for a compatible SSD that would run on my MB?

Use any Intel SATA ports for best speed.  Most likly you have SATA 2 ports because of the age, still works much better than mechanical drive

I like Samsung SSD, have had good luck with Kingston also

All you need is 256 GB, a 540 is nice if you have the budget or they are on sale

Assign ALL library files to the WD black mechanical drive to save room on the SSD

to push the GPU and not bottleneck at the CPU you'll need better than a 1080 monitor

There are those whom also installed xenon processors as a CPU upgrade that has a low cost

Pcie 3.0 and a modern CPU will of course run faster

I'm talking about improving your existing rig until your ready to spend the money for new generation CPU, MB, RAM (currently very expensive)

I'd say buy a 8700k and beef out your cards when newer cards hit the market.
<knowing future proof only means two quarters>

Was watching a guy test out Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 8k maxed out.
<3way sli only nets about 40fps and the low 10's with the cpu only maxing out at 3-8% total usage>

Guess it boils down to what you think is right. Most of us can agree that buying the most $$$ flagship cpu is a waste.
