Hey all.
In the last month, my 980 ti Classified has started to run hotter than usual.
Nothing about my case/system has changed. Regardless of game, my temps
hit 88-90c. I've visually inspected the card and can see nothing wrong with the heatsink, barely any
sag.  I keep my card & case very clean, fans are great. In fact I have two 140mm intake fans
blowing on the card. I do not have a custom fan curve set, nor do I have any overclocks outside of the default
factory clock it came with.

Do you think this is cause for concern? Before this last month, my temps never went above 82c.
Should I bother with an RMA?

My room this winter has been around 65F (18C)
Just a few minutes ago, I was playing Fallout 4 for 30mins, tabbed out to check my temps. I use HWMonitor and GPUZ.
Both show my GPU hitting 89c. Current room temp is 68F 20C

dang something seems off for sure. Even at default fan curve my 980 Ti classys in SLI don't see the 90C mark, but around 84c. You may try re-applying thermal compound and see if that helps, as more often then not, it does. Along with that i'd reinstall GPU drivers just to weed any driver related issues. You said you don't have a custom fan curve, however do you still use eVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner for other reasons such as OSD or overclocking? Seen both these programs cause some odd issues, where it seems to break the fan curve & or cause unusually high temps. I'd uninstall & delete any trace of them, then re-install if so.

Im on the latest nvidia drivers, rolling back didn't change temps at all.
I removed all traces of evga precision, didn't change temps either.

Silly question but did you check to make sure that the GPU fans are spinning?

If they are spinning, try manually setting the GPU fan speed to 100% and test again. If the temps still get to 90C then a TIM repaste is in order.

Also, you can try the same tests with the side of your case removed. If that drops the temperature of the GPU a lot then your case airflow needs tweaked/changed.

WoW, those temps.... I T.I.M.ed mine with Gelid (GC-Extreme) temps never run over 60c...with an aggressive fan profile. ReTIM and set an aggressive fan profile, check case airflow. Cheers

Setting the GPU Fans to 100% brings my temps back down to about 80-81c.
Fans on default with the case open, temps are still around 84-87c
So yes, case being closed does add a few degrees, but it's been closed for several months
and only in the last month has temps hit that 90c mark.

I would still suggest removing cooler & re-applying thermal compound. Between that, and the cooler getting re-seated, always a chance it will help.

Any compounds you'd suggest? I'm very much a noob when it comes to tinkering on this level. I've never removed the cooler from a gpu, well
not since an old PNY Geforce 4 ti 4200. But that just had 4 push pins...

I would suggest getting a different card.
Unless you want to go through years of trying everything on the web, like I have, to try to make it work, and rma only to have evga say the card is fine, and you still have the same issues.

I have tried water cooling (which DID fix the temps, for a while, but they started creeping back up on me).
I have since just stuck with air, but every month or 2, my temps creep up 1-2 more C. And thats with 100% fans on.
Seems the only thing everyone agrees on is that the VRM's are cheap on the 900 series, and once they go, they go. You can stem the tide with MSI Afterburner, but in the end it wont matter, and your card will eventually end up failing on you, ot you HAVE to have headsplitting 100 fan speeds forever if you want to game. :(

I really like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for that little extra drop in degrees C. However, even Arctic Silver 5 will be good enough if your current paste is drying out.

Wow, those 980ti Classified's get awfully hot. My 980ti SC+ with the default fan curve never goes over 76C which I still think could be improved if I changed out the factory TIM. Maybe one day I'll work up the courage to do it.:)

Removing the heatsink in order to replace the thermal paste is very easy.
    https://linustechtips.com...ssified-thermal-paste/
You ony need to remove the 4 screws around the GPU core. Leave the other screws installed.

Mine gets to 86 even after changing the thermal paste and custom fan curve. I just live with it. If it dies from heat hopefully it's still within the warranty period. Some of these just run hot.

I could wonder if heating up and cooling down some PCB could warp  and then you would get bad contact between the chip and the cooler  ?   I seen a few guys showing this on there cards  .

that contact between the coolers cold plate and the top of the chip is important   if bad or wrong all the paste and fan speeds may not do much good in the end . a ill fitted cooler aint efficient  and this could be a end result

Let's hope that's not the case, but always a chance May as well exhaust all other possibilities before throwing in the towel.

you may still try to dig up things like this one  and get a look/ idea  on what to look for on yours   though it could be straight  cold but start to warp as it heats up and then that contact between the  chip and cold plate get ''broke'' ?

    https://forums.hexus.net/graphics-cards/331809-inno3d-gtx-970-oc-overheating-fix.html

or maybe if the card was prone to sagging how that would affect things over time heating up and cooling down ?

    https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/how-much-sag-is-too-much-sag-msi-gtx-980.209780/

then you got to wonder with the rash of evga cards posted here with the burnt up deal  if power regulation is going on the frits ?

    LOL.
PM me if you are interested in a water cooling setup.
    Corsair H90 + HG10 N980
Both only used for 3 weeks.
Dropped the temps from 80's down to 60's
But, I have had to rma so often, I havent used it since the 1st time they told me to water cool.

Thanks for the offer. But at this point, I'm just going to wait til the 1180 line comes out.
Besides the 980ti is struggling with 1440p

    I hear you.
My titan x is struggling with 1440 also (although it shouldnt be, it worked great for 6 months, then went south and has never recovered since).
I like 90+ fps in my games. 30 and 60 just dont cut it. :(
