Intel accidentally leaked its own upcoming new X399 and z390 chipsets in a document about their Rapid Storage Technology. The Z390 supports current-generation "Coffee Lake" and upcoming "Cannon Lake" processors, while the X399 supports HEDT derivatives based on the two architectures, namely "Coffee Lake-X" and "Cannon Lake-X," with no mention of "Skylake-X." It remains to be seen if the motherboards containing the new chipsets will be higher in cost. Personally I already find Intel's chipset motherboards to be a bit on the high side.

Supporting two CPU's in a row with the same chipset, huh? People with money can now save a little and the rest of the populace can stop bending over.

Last I heard AMD proposed AM4 until Zen 3 (2020?) Would be a nice gesture from Intel if they did the same.

I've thought about going to X299 from my X99, but there is really no reason to. X299 just doesn't move the mark enough, especially on the NVME M.2 slots running through the PCH only and if you want to go through the CPU you have to use a PCI-E slot to do it and then you need the VROC to run Raid? I hope X399 addresses this. The 2066 cpu lineup is good, but their prices stink.

Threadripper cpu prices are good, but the motherboard prices stink and I really don't care for the size and power draw of the Threadripper cpu's.

I am slightly confused by that first sentence... not sure what you mean.

2 chipsets generally support two versions of the CPU. Am I misinterpreting your wording?

    Z170 & z270 support 6700k and 7700k.

Z370 and Z390... what happens to z470? Maybe later in life? Is this another 4770-4790 incremental mistake?

X299 & x399 should support the same CPUs, unless the cut the CPUs our below $999, which I am curious about...

My mistake. I was thinking socket.

I will be very interested to see more architectural details of x399, including PCIE lanes and capabilities around bootable RAID on M.2 non-Intel devices.  Unless Fate forces my hand and my Bloomfield dies, I've pretty much decided to sit out the current generation of processors.

Ah! Ok, that makes sense. Yeah, they only allow two cpu’s/chipset per socket, then move on to a different socket.

X299 was born before Zen, that's why it's market position is confusing in hindsight. The presence of the unlocked quad-cores makes it clear as day to me that Intel was planning on isolating overclockers to the HEDT platform and locking mainstream down, i.e. no future Z chipsets.

Intel took Zen only seriously enough to bring 6- and 8-core models to mainstream and a 12-core to raise premium bar for HEDT, but they didn't count on Threadripper. X399 has to address the potential of AMD going all out.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].
