I recently connected my USB Type C SSD to my EVGA 17" big boy ... I was hoping to get stellar read / write speeds. What I see is underwhelming. Wondering if anyone else has tried this and maybe I need to tweak a driver or something? I would assume the USB 3.1 connector on this Laptop would support at least 5Gb speed.

Thanks in advance.

Most external usb c ssds are still sata3 though, so to get speeds significantly faster than usb3 you would need the newer NVme ones which are still very limited in terms of availability and options.

Generic Sandisk SSD using a Nekteck SATA to USBC Disk enclosure... I wouldn't expect NVme speeds of course but this looks like a typical USB 3.0 speed
                     Read            Write
    SeqQ32       40                37
    4KQ32         14                 19
    Seq              43                37
    4K               13                 16

Maybe this is to be expected I honestly wasn't sure. Looking for others experience.

You are getting around 1/10th the standard speed. Can't test on mine because I have a T1 SSD that is 3.0. I can see if it works with a usb to type c adapter later.

You should get at least 450-500 sequential reads.

MrCrocker, just test my USB3 SSD to the thunderbolt port using an adapter, and I get the same results as you.  Dissapointing indeed.  If I figure out the reason, I will post back.  Meanwhile, did you contact support about this?  perhaps a software update is needed?

I suggest using the USB3 por then, for now.  Perhaps with an adapter?  or get another enclosure for the SSD.

I have a SanDisk ssd in a generic USB 3.0 case, and I get about 450 read and write. I would definitely say it's your adapter.

I have samsung T1 and works fine on USB3.0,  the slow speeds are only on the thunderbolt port, so not the fault of the external case I think but something with the port settings.

Wow, those are thumb drive speeds. I hope there's a good explanation!

I don't have an eGPU anymore, sold it after I got the SC17.  I wish I had it to test the thunderbolt port to see if it is working correctly at least with thunderbolt.

Read online that many usb c cables are not rated for USB3.1 only to USB2.0, so that might be the issue indeed.

Ok tested on another notebook and same results so my usb to usb c adapter is confirmed usb2.0 only.

Update: I haven't had the chance to test yet, I loaned my device out ... but I have a Macbook Pro as well and will do a test once I have my enclosure back and will report the results.

I forgot that the SC17 came with a usb c to usb 3.0 adapter, and now I can confirm that my external SSD is running at the correct speeds, and the adapter I used before was usb 2.0 only, that is why.
