Hello there,

I can't seem to get my fans to work on my evga gtx 970. I've tried precision x to manually turn the fans on but that doesn't work. I've also tried msi afterburner. Then fans just started twitching the other day and will not turn on - even when the gpu is above 90C. The gpu works fine, but the fans won't turn on.

Is this an issue with the bios of the fan? Or could the fan motor be shot?

Any help would be awesome!

Sounds like the controller for the fans is borked and you need to RMA the card if it's under warranty..But check the fan connector for being fully seated and latched in..The 4-wire fan connector is located under the fan shroud near the PCIe power connectors like shown here in the top-right and you should be able to get to it without removing the shroud..Also check that the fans spin freely by hand.

You could switch to the other VBIOS, if it has, and see if it matters..Depending on exactly which version of 970 it is, the VBIOS switch can be located in different places as shown here (same as some 700 series cards)..If it has the SW1 style switch, the 1 switch changes the VBIOS and the 2 switch is the VBIOS write protect switch..Turn off your PC and move the 1 switch..The SW1 style switch is on the back of PCB and the other is on the side, both in the PCIe power connector area.

Just buy a new fan...it's cheaper then fixing it.

Unfortunately, the card isn't under warranty still. I checked the fan connector and it seems tight. Also the fans do spin freely.

I couldn't find the VBIOS switch. I'm uploading a few pictures of my gpu.

    Thanks!

The fans do turn smoothly when the pc is unplugged and I turn them.

The card is a few years old and was working perfectly, but the fans just stopped turning and started twitching. The card still seems to work just fine, but it gets so hot (90C+) that I turn it off because I am scared to hurt it.

    I hadn't changed anything.

    Hardware - not quite sure...

    The driver is version 391.01

    Thanks!

thing to try if you can is get a gpu fan  [a known working one from any card  should do ]    un plug the cards fans from the header  and plug in the test fan  and see  .  if it looks to work fine  and as normal its the fans   if seems to do the same maybe in the card ..    I see and get a few  cards as this and so far its been the fans   not the card ..  , but ???

that card has 2 fans tied I to one header   so  if one fan went bad it could affect the 2 in total  ..   [see 3ed pic]

funny thig is the cards I get with this also  had powerlogic fans as well   [hmmmm.... ]  maybe something to that ?    also see a few / several threads here on this same issue as well  .  may look at some and reply to see if they answer back on what they ended up doing .[??]

thing is you need a good test GPU fan to scab in to see  what you need  weather new fans  or new card .  [fans are cheap  and i'll use what ever works  even if not the ''correct'' one  so to say  size or mounting  i'll make it work out just fine ]

Are you absolutely sure because many of those cards had a 3 year warranty. What is the part number of your video card and did you register it?

If the card's controller for the fans is borked, they make a Mini 4-Pin GPU to 4-Pin Fan Adapter so you can connect (and control) the GPU fans to a motherboard fan header..Ten bucks.

    Food for thought.

Outstanding advice and that will keep you going for a while until you're ready for a new video card.

Did you try MSI Afterburner to see if you can make them run at 100% fan speed?

Thanks man. I think that is what I might have to do.

ya. but if its the ''FANS''  that are bad what good will that do ya ?    see do yopu 100% know its the card ?   like I said for me of several cards it been the fan not the card  . replace the fan / fans and al;l was back to normal and good , cards were just fine

in the end its what you feel is best

    good luck

    P.S
you can test with any good known working GPU fan  pulled from any old card   just plug it in to the card at the header  just hanging off to the side [don't even have to mount it ]  run the card   [these cards got that -0- fan thing so you may need to make it go up to that 60 what ever C  temp to activate ]   see if the test fan work as normal if so  get a fan / fans  ..   if it is in fact the card try that whip off the motherboard to run them  as said above  / spend your money right once  on whats really needed and you proved that ..

    good luck
