Got a new 1070 ti black edition for stepup, and i get this horrible grinding noise at full load during games. Blew some compressed air on the fans and it got a little better but still there. Whats the issue?

Could be a fan ball bearing that's out of place.

Remove the card and place it flat on it's back on a piece of cardboard. Then push in the fans with your fingers about 5 times ea. Each time let the fan freely spring back into place.

This usually will get that barring to move back into place.

Could it be that it is a relatively high pitched noise?

Can you slow down the fans and see if the noise goes down as well? That noise only under full load or with high framerates?

Prob is coil whine then if the noise don't go away when you manually lower the fans durring load.

If it is coil whine and it's really loud you can get the card replaced.. though it can be also the psu or caused by the motherboard.. but if it wasn't there before the new card it's prob the card.

Also it may go away after awhile with a break in period.

I looked up coil whine noise since ive never had that problem, and thankfully i still dont! the noise goes away when im playing non intensive games. It went away for a bit, and then came back when playing a game where the fans were spinning. Strangely im not sure 100%, But i got stuttering when this was going on. For example i ran r6 siege benchmark and my min fps was in the 30s @1080p. Gta 5 also dropped into the 30s while standing still in game while the noise was going on. If it was the fans, msi afterburner and evga precision both didnt register high enough temps to throttle or anything.

Can you max out the fans with no load and see if the sound your hearing is there?

Fans arent making the noise, sound is gone and all when playing games. Im not sure if the ball bearing fell into place or what. I was off the pc for 5 hrs before trying again. Ill keep an ear out for any more sounds

Hope it stays that way. Make sure you have registered your card, just in case it needs to be warrantied. You should do that regardless, and upload your receipt. That's a great tip guys with the bearing. Did not know it could be remedied like that.

Probably the cable connecting the fan at the end of the card. It can hit the fan slightly and cause that noise. Mine did that when I first got it. I had to move it slightly to fix it.

Going to revive this thread, it definitely isnt the fan, i revved it up to 100% using precision. Grinding sound occurs whenever i hit voltage limit, which is fairly often regardless of load on the gpu. Does that count as coil whine?

Edit: My main concern is if this will lead to the card failing in the future, though id perfer not to rma.

Grinding and coil whine are two different sounds. If you are really hearing a grinding noise you definitely aren't hearing coil whine.

I was having the same issue as OP and this suggestion worked - grinding noise when the temp reached around 65ish.  I also gently pushed in these small black and brown wires that seemed very close to the blade just in case.  Thank you, AHowes for posting it!
