Hey, folks! Just wanted to share a bit of a horror story with you all to hopefully stave off some pain in the future.

If you watercool, CHECK YOUR HOSES from time to time. This is especially important if you make any changes to your loop.

The long and short of it is I added a second vga watercard to my loop yesterday and neglected to check everything over again and 3 hours later heard a gurgle and water sprayed out as one of the hoses pushed free.

The gory part of the tale is I am down one video card (A 1070 SC) and am not yet convinced the other (The 1070FTW I won on the last contest) is 100%.

And given today's market prices? I expect to be down for a while.

But, let this lesson take hold! CHECK YOUR LOOPS! Don't let this nightmare happen to you!

That is very good advice. In fact I recommend you check your loop for a minimum of 2 hours for any major change.

when this happened to me i was lucky enough to be sitting beside the PC and was able to kill power fast enough that i actually didnt lose any hardware. if i where you i would definitely take the cards completely apart and clean them with alcohol and put them back together and see if they run again, worth a try anyway.

ever since that happened to me i have always doubled/triple check every connection and run an overnight leak test before i put power to the system as a whole.

Get you a large bin, half fill it with rice, place a papertowel over the rice, and set your card on the paper towel and let it dry. It may be fine. I have had quite a few leaks and always use distilled water or nonconductive fluids from EK, and have never had real damage done.

It has been suggested that I share my paypal address for anyone who wants to anonymously help me get this card/cards replaced and I wanted to hem and haw and be all 'naw, I'll just be patient' and all of that, but this was a financial suckerpunch that my wife and I can't really absorb to replace the card, so I'm gonna bite the bullet and put it out there.

drougnor @ gmail(dot)com is my Paypal. Don't feel like you HAVE to give anything, but if you do, you have my heartfelt thanks and eternal gratitude.

bcav, that's awesome and I will let you know, but for now, hang on to them just in case of need for someone else. I'm not 100% down and out, so can stand to wait a bit.

Thanks to three folks (Two donations and one pledge so far) I'm about a full third of the way to replacing that SC.  Knowing that I'm closer to a place of 'Just waiting for stock' vs 'not being able to replace at all' is already a big relief, so I want to thank you all for your generosity, but remember, DON'T BE A SLOPPY WATERCOOLER like I was!  Sooooo freaking embarrassed by that.

Thanks for sharing drougnor. I for one get so busy I take things for granted. I better check mine before the grim reaper catches me. It's been a while since I checked connections but last time I checked it was fine. When first installed I usuall let the system go through a few thermo cycles then check them when cold. I use the "push hose on nipple then screw the cap to lock down style. So far so good. Bitspower, alphacool and coolance all work well.

Curious as to what type of tubing you were using RE: "one of the hoses pushed free"

    Rigid (Hard) tubing ?

To answer the tubing question - It's flex tubing with compression fittings that could also be used on rigid tubing - If you pull on them while working on the loop and don't reset them before you rerun the loop, or if you don't ensure you have the right kind of angle to ensure they are pushing themselve's into the fitting, they can, over time, push free.  Evidently, I was neglectful of the former.

It was NOT a fun lesson to have driven into the face, but it WAS, apparently, a NEEDED one.

Thanks to you wonderful folks, I'm about half way to a replacement card, if EVGA ever is able to keep them in stock for more than 5 minutes at a time. *laughs* Getting to the listing when I get the 'hey, we have them now' e-mail before they are sold back out is becoming a sport in itself.

Even if you have an AIO water cooler you should also check that from time to time.

This is my own opinion but you should always do a 24hr leak test with just the pump running. I've done a lot of custom loops and I haven't had one bust or leak on me yet (knock on wood) since i started. In terms of AIO's, I only had a switech h220x which was expandable to gpu if you wanted and i did. Good luck recovering!

24 hours at least, and if you have the ability of putting a thermal load on the loop during this test, DO IT! Sometimes the heat will let something fail during this test (Seals will soften a little, metal expands, etc).  Definitely not something everyone has access to, for sure.

Good news is I managed to find a replacement card and everything is up and running fine, so I was able to celebrate my birthday (today) early with some heavy Far Cry 5 time this weekend. Such a gorgeous game!

Now to finish paying for that card and look ahead to the next upgrades.

Thank you all again, btw! Glad to be useful to the team, even if it IS as an example of what NOT to do. *laughs*

I will be setting up a few loops soon and will without a doubt remember to quadruple check everything. Sorry you went through all that but I appreciate the fact that you reminded me with this thread, I just may have jumped the gun and shot myself in the foot by doing so. Glad  you got things sorted out. Oh, Happy birthday!
