Hi all!

I recently delved into OC'ing my 8700k(de-lidded) and the results have been promising with a stable 5ghz OC using a Coolermaster 240mm CL. The strange thing I'm finding is that my VCore is much lower than what I see most people claiming to have to use in order to maintain a 5ghz OC. As reported by CPU-Z, my VCore is running at 1.248 with a temp of 69C. Is the VCore requirement more indicative of a function of chip quality, power supply or Motherboard power phase design? I have my latest CPU-Z validation in my sig.

The reason I'm asking this, is that I would like to push my OC a bit higher, so I'm thinking with the lower VCore at 5ghz, then I might have gotten a good chip, which might take a higher OC and still be stable, but with less VCore....and less heat??

That is about what mine is but my Temps are never higher than 56-60C
What is your AVX Setting in the Bios?
What Recommendations did the ASRock Forum give you?

Thanks for the reply. My temps are after about an hour of running the GPU-Z stress test.
Last night I decided to run HWinfo and the VCore was actually jumping around a bit and hit a high of 1.31v. Not sure if this is an issue with GPU-Z or not, as it seems the 1.248 voltage seems to be reported a lot on the 8700K - from my checks on other validations.

Haven't had a chance to check AVX just yet due to work. The ASRock forums seem to be deserted. My last question has yet to be answered there, so I thought I would check things out here.

Edited to add: This is a basic overclock with just a multiplier change with everything else on auto. Also, got the temps down to 62C. Removed and reapplied the thermal compound. Seems my Arctic Silver was a bit aged. Applied the stuff that came with the CL cooler and it made a big difference. Updated my CPU-Z validation also.

Also ran Firestrike and got a decent score.

Been reading about OC'ing in general and what specifically applies to this board. Managed a stable 5.2ghz with slight bump in VCore to 1.345 and uncored to 4200. All else on auto. The newest Bios for this board(P1.70) is amazing!

The most important thing I did was I removed the factory paste(it was almost like chalk it was so dried out) from my GPU and applied CooLabs liquid metal. HUGE difference in temps! Went from idle of 32-34C to 26C, and max temps after several Firestrike runs never went past 62C.

    Current Firestrike score is 22,446

Dropped the OC back to 5.1 but bumped Uncore to 4800. Thermals at 5.2 were getting uncomfortably high 69-72'ish.

I also added my system to Mod Rigs if anyone wants to check it out.

Does anyone know how the rankings work at 3Dmark?

My latest Firestrike run indicates that my system is in the top 98th percentile, but in the "Results Details" graph it shows that my score is only one of 21 systems to surpass 22400. Yet, if I click on the graph section link, and refine the search to single 1080 GPU's and 8700K CPU's only, it shows the highest score for a single GPU 1080/8700K system to be 23008...with my system being listed at #14th with my current score. I really don't know what to make of it.

I think you may have a golden chip, as in, one of the best chips that can do 5 GHz at 1.25V! However, I haven't tried myself, and yes, chip quality usually determines the final overclock, although power phases of the motherboard can make a great difference! And also, the lower the temperature, the higher the peak overclock, assuming you keep the voltage the same. The higher the voltage, the higher the peak overclock, assuming you keep the temperature the same. This is why professional overclockers use liquid nitrogen (LN2) when overclocking because as you increase the voltage, you increase the heat, and you need tremendously powerful cooling methods to keep the component stable. When you have both cold temperatures and high voltages, the peak overclock is the highest, however it's the overclocker's job to decide the right balance between voltage and temperature. Hope this helps!

I am at 5.11, delid, on this Asus Apex board.  Voltage is at 1.3.  In game load temps per Intel extreme tuning utility tops at 61 (Farcry 5, BF1) after hours of game play.  Memory is also at 4000, so things are getting a good workout.

I have not tried 5.2 yet, but I do not see it as an issue with good cooling, delid with a metal TIM applied, stable PSU and a solid MB.

Delidded i'm getting 5.0GHZ with 1.275V at 63C after a hour of the Intel stress test and 58C prime95. I'm running a CLC 280mm cooler. I haven't thought about clocking it more but, i'll see in the future possibly...

Hello guys. I have almost finished my build except for video card at the moment as their prices are in the sky at least in my country. This includes: Intel i7 8700K CPU with Noctua NH-D15S cooler, G.Skill 2x8GB 3200Mhz CL14 RAM, ASUS Maximus X Hero Motherboard, Seasonic Prime Platinum 750W PSU and old ASUS DC2 OC GTX 780 Video card I never bothered with overclocking, but in this case, I wanted to run all cores at 4.7 Ghz so I set that in BIOS. Everything else in Bios is left on Auto, SVID behavior set to best case scenario, XMP is enabled. As I am not the richest person, I plan on staying with this build for many years. My PC will be running 24/7. I'm usually playing games, watching videos, reading online. Bluestacks TextNow Photomath
