Do people buy used CPUs? I was thinking of selling mine and I'm wondering if that's taboo or something. People sell every other computer part, why not CPUs? For some reason, it seems different to me.

What are the EVGA community's thoughts on this issue? Would you, personally, ever buy one used?

Of all the components, I've had the least issues with used CPU's. Basically a CPU either works or doesn't most of the time and to make them not work you either have to pump a ton of voltage through them or physically damage them.

So yes, I buy used CPU's.

Yup, I have purchased quite a few used CPUs for older computers which are too good to throw away but not worth a brand new CPU.

Actually, I think that my PC has a used CPU in it right now.

I haven't ever bought a used CPU for a new build, but would consider it for an older system that works good but needs a CPU to run.

I haven't bought a new CPU in years for any of my primary builds.  I buy used very often and if reviving older machines Xeons can be found for a great price for the X79 and X58 systems.

like others have said cpu's used sell as quick as graphics card here as long as it hasn't been over clocked bad and a lot of voltage ran through it.

Thank you. I don't know if I'd be able to sell here yet. I'm probably too new. In general, I was just wondering. As was mentioned, a used CPU is probably a safer bet than a component with moving parts. This is good to know.

most of my cpu's are used, heck most of my computers are, its like a new car or was till the GPU craze, its always cheaper to buy last years tech then to buy today's tech.

On that note, what is a good rule of thumb for upgrading a PC? It's probably not a great idea to buy the latest and greatest, but at what point does it become harder to get a decent return on your old parts? I suppose that's difficult to gauge, but does anyone have any acquired wisdom on this?

Well for instance I just sold off my i7 3770 + Board. I paid 50 for the cpu and 65 for the board and my return was 150, so it worked out, but I'd say anything somewhat current has a decent return. People are still buying first gen i7 parts, but really I'd be looking at no older than 4th gen parts at this point, maybe 3rd gen if its a good deal.

I like to buy my components new and then sell them used when upgrading. I almost always cut the person an excellent deal, because I just don't like the hassle of trying to sell stuff and people scoop my stuff up quick like that. In the past, I always try to sell everything to friends first... For the obvious reason, if you try to rip me off (or I you) we know how to reach each other.

There's a great subreddit called hardwareswap for buying, selling, and trading hardware. You can link your heatware account too. I also use pcpartpicker.com forums too although they get less traffic
