Does anyone have any experience/recommendations with adding in a PCIe SATA3 card.
I have the X99 FTW board, using onboard RAID0 with 5 drives.
I need 3 extra ports to connect to this SNT-SAC2131TL 2-bay 3-HDD Hot Swap trayless backplane.

The last card I tried was a SYBA PEX40039 2-port https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124045
on an EVGA X58 SLI motherboard. Now the only problem was it worked fine if I disabled the onboard raid. otherwise it break the raid.
I tried everything to get it to work.

I'm hoping someone has a similar setup, and what they are using.

Thanks...

I will take an educated guess and say that you might be running out of PCI lane resources on that X58 and it might happen again as well. If you have enough resources then this should work.

In my opinion if you want to make a raid0 with 5 drives please use drives of the same size and type.

    Current Setup to be used:
    X99 FTW (5930k)
    Samsung 850 PRO (Rapid) OS/WIn10
4 WD blacks for various storage
3 Hot-Swap Bays for Backups, Images, Cloning
RAID0 5 WD Blacks 1TB on X99 (Not Windows RAID) setup in BIOS | Ctrl-I | IRST seen as (1) 5TB drive for Games, and Programs

I am no longer using this board but here is the old benchmark of 4 WD blacks in RAID0, just using a fraction. all drives are identical. this speed somehow doubled from X58 to X99 with the same raid drives.

the PEX40039 was tried on a X58, which I no longer own. it broke the onboard raid some kind of BIOS conflict with onboard raid enabled.

I have looked at the Rocket 640L.
Do you use an onboard RAID with this card attached?

Yes I am also looking at dedicated RAID controllers.
Although the X99 has an excellent raid feature, as did the X58.
I used the same 4 WD Blacks for 10 years, and still using them.
Although I had a small data corruption recently and I upgraded the drives.
I've been looking at this card: LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card
I just don't know how it will play with the motherboard.

I think this is where I will be heading. Is this used on your X99?
I guess I would not need the onboard raid anymore, so that would not be a conflict.

I'm thinking that these cards are not compatible with (Motherboard Raid) enabled.
So if I get an actual RAID card I will benefit from it. and get the extra ports I need.
Another thing I like is using the SAS breakout cables keeps it nice and clean.

Ok, I have never used SAS drives,
But if I understand the SATA drives will work with SAS-to-(4)SATA cables?

    How is your setup?
I am reading that people are saying you cannot setup a Hardware RAID via BIOS,
They say you have to use Windows Disk Manager. (Drag & Drop) I guess.

I want to be able to setup the raid in the cards bios.
Maybe people just don't understand using [Cntrl-I] or [Cntrl-H] to properly setup a raid.

Correct, you can mix SAS and SATA on the same channel if you want to but I do not recommend it.
Put your SAS Drives on one channel and your SATA Drives on the other channel.

That is because they really do know what a true raid really is, maybe.
That is because a Real Raid Card has it's own Bios and you setup the Raid in the Raid Bios, as you say above.
Once you have the Raid setup the name you give it will show in your Bios and you select the name of the Raid, that is if the Raid is your Boot Drive.
You do not need to use Drivers or Software to use a Hardware Based Raid, you only need it if you are running a Software Based Raid.
You can also have Both the Bios Based Raid as well as a Hardware PCIe Based Raid on the same computer, you only need set it right.
You also need the Resources on the MB, Most Desktop Motherboards do not as to why the have server motherboards.
I think for the most part NAS are a better way to go for Large Storage Needs.
Need more info of what it is you are trying to do on your computer to best help you out.

First let me say: thus far, you've been very helpful. Thanks. everyone.

    My main 2 questions.
Will the raid be setup at boot via the RAID Card? (Not Windows)
Will the card work correctly if I have a raid setup on my board as it is currently.

    -----------------
I just need to keep my current RAID0 of 5 drives where windows sees it as 1 logical drive. I use [Control-I] to set up raid
weather it be on the (RAID card) or stay on my motherboard.
No right clicking on drives in Disk Manager to set it up. I want a [Control-H] type Bios setup.

Being able to setup 2 RAID arrays would be a bonus.
Or even keeping my onboard Intel Raid if possible.

This what I do NOT want.

I would create your New Raids and COPY (Not Move) your Data From them 3 80GB Drives you have and then remove them from your system all together.
I would also make sure all your Drives are SATA III 6GB Drives because the Raid will only run as Fast as the Slowest Drive you have.
So a Raid with 3 SATA III Drives and 1 SATA II Drive the Raid will only run at SATA II or 3GB.
Then 80GB Drives and I am going to add them 160GB Drives are all SATA I or 1.5GB so time to dump them IMO.
I dumped over 20 Drives this last year changing all to 6GB Drives or higher.

Are you going Raid 5 with a Hot Spare?

    I'm staying with RAID 0 on 5 1TB WD Blacks SATA3 128KB Stripe,
I used to use 64KB, but 128 is working out great.

Performs better then an SSD except Random IOPS, Nearly 3 times faster Transfer rates.

BTW: Those 80GB drives in the pic are not mine, I pulled the image from google as an example of how I do not want to create a raid..

The whole point to my RAID is PURE performance and size.
I run regular backups when I'm not using the PC. I can backup a 1TB in about 2 hours onto a WD RED 4TB
I use Acronis True Image 2014, I do not like the newer versions. I am in the market for something better, but it still makes images super fast.

Wouldn't that ram be on the controller card?
I'm looking at having 512/1GB DDR3 on the controller to make it worth while.
You can also setup a ram cache.

I was curious so I searched and read this.
    http://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/19/dell-openmanage-server-administrator-v8.3/omss_ug/write-policy?guid=guid-5416e427-5348-46b9-9642-11a92e079035&lang=en-us
So it may be possible to override this in the BIOS.

Yes 512MB of Ram on my two last cards or Severs. Battery can be a pain sometimes though.
They Do Cost if you want to go that way, but they are a hole lot Faster than any non-ram cache card.

I have been researching all raid cards.
the one you recommended keeps coming up in my list.
    https://www.newegg.com/Pr...=PRICE&PageSize=36

Can you use this card as a regular non-raid drives.
in other words (will this card simply add 4-ports?)
Would I be able to move drives from this card to regular windows computers?

I'm guessing because it supports JBOD you can simply use it as extra sata ports if you wanted.
and have the ability to make a raid.

Reason I ask, is I believe LSI cards do not allow for non-raid drives, they must be setup as single drive raid.
    Unless my info. is incorrect.

    Thanks..

Well I've narrowed it down to:
    - RocketRaid 640L (for simple cheap solution)
    - LSI 9266-8i (PCIe 2.0 x8) Dual Core | 1GB DDR3
    - LSI 9270-8i (PCIe 3.0 x8) Dual Core | 1GB DDR3

I'm still researching the compatibility for X99/5930k

I can get them a lot cheaper.
The only difference between them is the 2.0 vs. 3.0 | PCIe that I can tell.

    I have a NON-Shared (PE6) 8x slot available on the X99-FTW this will leave me with 1 (PE3) 8x open for use.
    • PE1 – x16 (x8 if PE2 is used) (GTX780)
    • PE2 – x8 (EMPTY)
    • PE3 – x8 (Empty)
    • PE4 – x16 (x8 if PE3 is used) (SoundBlaster Z)
    • PE5 – x4 (Gen 2 only, 4 lanes pulled from PCH) (Firewire 1394a for Saffire Pro 14 DAC)
    • PE6 – x8 (Will put the RAID Controller Here)

     What do you think?

The Cheap one is an X4 Card and the other two are X8 Cards, Slot Size that is.

    I meant on these 2
    - LSI 9266-8i (PCIe 2.0 x8) Dual Core | 1GB DDR3
    - LSI 9270-8i (PCIe 3.0 x8) Dual Core | 1GB DDR3

they seem to be the same with the exception of PCIe version.

    Looking Now!
You may want to review this LSI 9266-8i vs LSI 9271-8i - Storage Devices - Linus Tech Tips
I would think 2.0 is find for 4 or less drives but with 8 I would go with 3.0
I would also make sure the older one supports Trim, some did not.

Make sure before you set them up to update the Firmware.

    https://www.broadcom.com/products/storage/raid-controllers/megaraid-sas-9270-8i

    Comparing them now
They seem to have some nice management tools, the last firmware was in 2016 and both show support for Windows 10.

The Broadcom website is where I ended up finding the 2 cards, because everytime I found a card I was interested in,
It would not be anywhere to be found on Broadcom website, this told me it was EOL or OEM.
So I ended up using the nav menu there to find a card to match my needs, then cross searching the stores.
Those 2 were the top 2. The cache battery may be a nice upgrade later if I decide to use it in my actual web server.
But my webs can be backed up in a matter of a couple minutes. and no heavy databases. just settings, posts, pics, & such.

Thanks for Linus review, I've been watching their big move into their warehouse.
I'll check that video, which will answer my question I'm sure.

    Thanks.
