It's that the time of the year!

LiquidKhaos v4
Case & PSU: MM U2-UFO Black Mirror · Corsair AX1200
System Core: I7-4930-E @ 4.5GHz 1.278v · EVGA X79 Dark · 16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR-2133 9-11-11-31-2T
Storage & OS: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB · Western Digital Caviar 1TB · Windows 10-64bit Pro
Multimedia: EVGA GTX 1080ti SC Black Edition · Dell Ultrasharp 27in Gaming · SteelSeries Arctis 7
Watercooling: HK 3.0 Rev 3 Black Nickel · EK-FC GTX1080 · (2) Black Ice Xtreme 3 3x120 · (2) Swiftech MCP655

7 years ago I started building LiquidKhaos v3, upgraded the core in 2013, and then recently upgraded the video card in 2017. It finally dawned on me that I wanted to do a whole new system, smaller, and good enough to hold me another 5 years. I decided on a m-ATX design and I'm carrying over my SSD and my GTX 1080ti. The big difference this time is that I am not doing a custom waterloop--instead I am going to take a stab at EVGA's CPU and GPU coolers. I don't do any crazy overclocking these days--really all I do is play WOW, Destiny 2, and Battlefield.

I'm open to suggestions; I contemplated the Z boards but ended up going X thinking it would be better choice to carry me 5 years without having to change core equipment. Price is not a concern; the plan is smaller. My MM case is currently a 60lb 19" cube that sits on my desk.

Here are the specs for the new build;

CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K
Motherboard: EVGA Z370 Micro ATX
Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum Series 16GB DDR4 DRAM 3000
GPU: GTX1080ti SC (carry over)
SSD: Samsung 960 EVO NVMe
CPU Waterblock: EVGA CLC 240 Liquid / Water CPU Cooler
GPU Waterblock: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC HYBRID Waterblock Cooler
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 T2, 80+ TITANIUM 750W
Case: Parvum s2.5 M-ATX

I will use this thread as a build log too -- right now Parvum is custom designing an s2.5 case for me and I will probably get it in about 1-2 months.

NOTE: If you like this case and the custom air brush work I had done; keep a mental note as I will be putting this case up for sale when I move to the new rig. It's in pristine condition and I can take it apart and collapse it so it fits in small box.

Honestly if you're going with a X299 platform and money isn't a concern there is no point in the i7 line up on X299. You don't get the full 44 PCI-E lanes that are available on X299 with any of the i7 CPUs. I'd recommend at the least a i9 7900X, sure it's more expensive but it offers the full 44 PCI-E lanes and has 2 more cores and 4 more threads. Overkill for gaming? Sure. But there is an argument also to be made in spending $600 on a CPU and only getting 28 PCI-E lanes. Will you "need" that many lanes? That's something only you can answer, but with the possibility of NVMe RAID and multiple video cards, those initial 28 lanes will get used up quickly.

If what you're building is a gaming rig first and foremost, then I would strongly urge you to consider Z370 and either a 8600K or 8700K. They are the current fastest gaming CPUs on the market period, and the fact that they are heavily overclockable puts them even further ahead. Either should comfortably last you multiple years before needing an upgrade.

Lastly if buying a system with the expectation of it being your daily driver for some years to come I would recommend no less than 32GB RAM. Sure it's borderline overkill for most people right now but if preparing for the future and money isn't the object, why would you handicap yourself here?

Thanks for the recommendations! I saw the i9 and wasn't fond of $1000 price tag.

I do like the Z370 idea -- it's solely gaming. I do all my other business on a Macbook Air laptop--so that's the reason I wanted to downsize considerably. Back in the day this was my primary machine for everyday life and gaming.

I'm going to look at Z370 option with a 8700K. I'll look into 32GB of Ram. I do think I want to go with M type SSD to cut down on things. I don't know if I will ever get another 1080ti. The one I have now is incredibly awesome.

    Thanks!

It'll be about a month or two before I start ordering all the other hardware--want to give Parvum some lead time to cut the case. Hopefully the Z370 will be available--I went ahead and setup an auto-notify so that I can purchase it the moment it's available. Everything else is easy to acquire. :)

This is my first rig with AIO -- I've never used them before and I'm eager to see how the EVGA cooler for CPU and the GPU Hybrid work. If it doesn't hold well I can always switch to a custom loop (prefer not to for the maintenance aspect.)

Just got another delivery from EVGA and realized I forgot to order my motherboard. I don't know how I managed to miss that but I did. I found it at Newegg for the same price and it involved me not having to call my credit card company because EVGA charges show up on the internal terminal which requires me to call them each time and approve it. I had to do it with my previous order and didn't want to bother with it this time--so I'll just have to accept something from Newegg. LOL

Today I got the AIO cooler for the 1080ti and also 3 more fans. I am going to try the push/pull setup with the EVGA AIO coolers. I'd like to see if it does better with keeping temps down. I'm working on accepting that I may not see the same results as I did with a custom loop but I'd like to see where it actually lands. Has anyone ever done push/pull with the EVGA AIO's?

I bet it's hard to say goodbye to that U2 UFO case - mine is still sitting in the closet, I don't have the heart to let it go. I also moved from a U2 UFO custom loop quite a few years back to building a AiO cooled rig using EVGA's CLC280 and their GPU Hybrid cooler. Certainly way easier for maintenance. The difference after putting the EVGA Hybrid cooler on the Titan X Pascal was unbelievable - seriously night and day difference. The card now performs like a $1,200 GPU should perform; 2GHz stable without even having to tweak the voltage, temps peaking at 50-55°C on full load. Just absolutely amazing what a difference that AiO cooler made. The EVGA CLC280 keeps my i7-7700k running at maximum 55-60°C on full load - I am very pleased with that. These AiO coolers are getting very good these days. Enjoy your build - oh, and you might want to check out the Corsair light bar upgrade kits [link] for those Dominators - some subtle bling that's doesn't turn the inside of your case into Times Square... ;)

It's definitely bitter sweet saying good bye to my UFO case; partly I'm ready to do it because the 19" 50lb cube is getting old and also because it was a really amazing case and I'll miss the custom airbrush panels I had done in a Battlefield scene (ex-Army served in Iraq and got injured.) I was little nervous about the AIO approach but I wanted to give it a shot. It was going to cost me about $500 in parts to go with my own custom loop. The temps scare me the most! I have 19 fans in that UFO case with 6 fans per 320mm radiator. My CPU never broke 35-38c at full load and my 1080ti never got over 40c. Obviously those temps will be higher now since I'm not running full 320mm radiators per item. My old rig was overkill with the two separate loops, one handling the processor and other the GPU (which used to be GTX780 SLI's).

Overall I am excited to get this going! I like to hear someone else did the same thing with the AIO. I'm pass on the LED's--the case design doesn't have windows as I didn't want any. It's a very subtle case and the only light output will be through the frosted blue acrylic on the front. I'm going to put in two 10" white LED strips to glow that part.

I will say this; if the AIO's don't make me comfortable in terms of the temperatures--I would go ahead and build a rigid tube loop setup. I went ahead and bought extra EVGA fans to do push/pull on the radiator since I have no windows. I am not concerned with the thickness/appearance.

Cost and need: I merely play World of Warcraft and maybe some Destiny 2 or Battlefield. I wasn't opposed to spending $1000 on i9; just couldn't see reason to do it. If this was my main rig and everything in my life was on it; then I would have considered it. Given I have another computer that I do everything else on. Also; I wanted to throw the pancake at the wall and build a good gaming rig for low cost. My last rig was well over $5k in parts; I did not want to do that again.

It's up and running on my sudo test bench.

I'll post updates on benchmarks etc once I finish installing Windows; etc.

Ha! Styling test bench! Enjoy. The 960 EVO NVME is a great ssd btw, I have the same as my primary drive. Same 3000MHz RAM as well by the looks, except I got 4x8GB. Damn RAM prices are insane now - the RAM I got less than a year ago is now double the price.

Test bench works haha; until I get the case.

    Here is a 3dmark 11 test; https://www.3dmark.com/fs/14796983

Here is compare of my old rig (same GPU) and new rig; https://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/14796983/fs/13555428#

Looks good; maybe an OC on the CPU will increase quite bit.

    Re: Alliance 2018 2018/02/17 11:04:42 (permalink)
It took me few days and email to EVGA; they did confirm that I can in fact add 2 more fans to CLC 240 setup and 1 fan to Hybrid AIO using the same fan connector.

I used the EVGA 120mm fans from the web store and bought few items.

CLC 240 AIO; it uses 4 pin PWM so I bought (2) 4pin splitters in order to connect fans (stock--each fan has it's own 4 pin plug on the cable coming from the CPU block.) I had to daisy chain 2 fans off 1 connector.

Hybrid AIO; it uses 3 pin connector but the EVGA fans are 4 pin. I bought a 3 pin splitter (I couldn't find a 3 pin to 4 pin splitter) and then a 3 pin to 4 pin adapter for actual fan.

Obvious this will get all cleaned up when it's installed. I am happier about having push/pull setup now.

I am officially done for now -- just waiting on Parvum to finish designing my case and shipping it out.

I’m buying a Parvum s2.5 case. It’s about 11” wide and 14” deep. Google it.

It’ll be a hot minute because it’s completely custom but well worth it!

I am working on GPU radiator. The fans are loud since they’re 100% stock. I may put resistors in to lower the speed or put them on something to control speeds.

You and me both! I went back to Parvum and told them I want a fully custom one-of-kind so they're coming up with something amazing to fit my Alliance-based theme.

I also did a little something different; I took the fans on the Hybrid 1080ti AIO Radiator and plugged them into a bus on the motherboard. They were just incredibly loud running at 100% in the stock way. I set the port to 50% and they're running at 1500rpm; going to watch the GPU temps and see if it stays within normal range while gaming.

I figure this was safer than using resistors to drop the voltage. At least if I see I need more speed I can turn it up using the EVGA Motherboard application (I think).

This looks like it's gonna be sick! Surprised you're not going to upgrade from the 960 EVO to the 960 PRO.
Do the fans on both sides of the radiator really help?

I didn't see need to spend money on the 960 PRO over the EVO for just a gaming rig.

As for push/pull--I've always done it and I don't see any issues with it.

I went back to Parvum and decided that I wanted their assistance in creating a one-off unique Alliance based design.

Here is the new design that is currently in production.
