Had this issue after setting up new system and found nothing that would resolve, until i disabled the enhanced system sounds in the properties manager for the device, after doing this, sound stop sounding like it was a a tin can under water, thought I would toss this out there for anyone having issues with sound like I did.

If you have the Realtek HD Audio Manager installed from the drivers, perhaps one of the useless crap sound effects were enabled on accident:

    think Mike has the answer.
I have the same board but never changed any setting

but what does a tin can sound like :   I only have heard steel or aluminum cans.

Thanks everyone for sharing good solutions. Audio issues are sometimes notoriously hard to track down.

Just realized i posted this to the wrong series Motherboard page, but it has Creative sound drivers. Thanks for the replies though, was quite a few changes i had to make in the EQ settings within the Creative software to get it sounding right after the above change as well.
